    Notes: When dissipative particles are left alone, their fluctuation energy decays due to collisional interactions, clusters build up and grow with time until the system size is reached. When the effective dissipation is strong enough, this may lead to the "inelastic collapse," i.e., the divergence of the collision frequency of some particles. The cluster growth is an interesting physical phenomenon, whereas the inelastic collapse is an intrinsic effect of the inelastic hard sphere (IHS) model used to study the cluster growth—involving only a negligible number of particles in the system. Here, we extend the IHS model by introducing an elastic contact energy and the related contact duration tc. This avoids the inelastic collapse and allows to examine the long-time behavior of the system. For a quantitative description of the cluster growth, we propose a burning-like algorithm in continuous space, that readily identifies all particles that belong to the same cluster. The criterion for this is here chosen to be only the particle distance. With this method we identify three regimes of behavior. First, for short times a homogeneous cooling state (HCS) exists, where a mean-field theory works nicely, and the clusters are tiny and grow very slowly. Second, at a certain time which depends on the system's properties, cluster growth starts and the clusters increase in size and mass until, in the third regime, the system size is reached and most of the particles are collected in one huge cluster. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We describe a family of random lattices in which the connectivity is determined by the Voronoi construction while the vectorizability is not lost. We can continuously vary the degree of randomness so in a certain limit a regular lattice is recovered. Several statistical properties of the cells and bonds of these lattices are measured. We also study anisotropy effects on the numerical solution of the Laplace equation for varying degrees of randomness.

    Notes: Summary The pathogenesis and progression of hypertensive heart disease are unclear; however, both involve a genetic predisposition and environmental influences. To test the role of exogenous factors, we examined the hearts of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) exposed to noise stress and ethanol intake. Twenty-two SHR and nine normotensive Wistar rats (NWR) were continuously exposed to a 65 db, 4 and 250 Hz tone for 52 weeks. Twelve of these SHR aged 20–22 weeks were concomitantly given 20% ethanol in their drinking water up to week 52. Eight SHR and 12 NWR served as controls. We examined hemodynamic parameters, the cardiac configuration, the cardiac microvasculature, interstitial tissue, and ischemic myocardial lesions. We found that noise stress significantly increased the microvessel wall area, the number of microvessels with an outer diameter 〉19 μm, the degree of cardiac fibrosis, and the extent of ischemic myocardial lesions in SHR, but not in NWR. These effects were all ameliorated and the diastolic blood pressure was lowered by the ingestion of ethanol. Cardiac weights and dimensions, heart rate and dp/dtmax were not influenced by either noise or ethanol intake. These results suggest that hypertensive heart disease in SHR can be aggravated by noise stress. Ethanol ameliorates these changes by mechanisms which remain to be explored.
