Summary Based on the assumption of a two-dimensional pure death process, i.e. a process in which transitions are possible only through changeovers from one state to the ones immediately adjacent, a system of differential equations is derived for the state probabilities in this two-dimensional system. The intensity functions of this process are determined by the type of combat considered, and each of them must be developed from a probabilistic model. The intensities are determined for the two “classical” cases ofLanchester-theory, “direct fire” and “area fire” as well as for an additional type of combat. For the two classical cases, as pendants to the deterministicLanchester equations, differential equations are derived for the expected values of the one-dimensional processes included in the process here assumed. In some detail the determination of winning probabilities is considered; furthermore the probability for the duration of a combat is developed. Finally, the simulation of the process is considered.
Notes:
