Notes: Abstract A case of granular cell tumor of the urinary bladder is reported. A 48-year-old Japanese man with a bladder tumor underwent transurethral resection of the tumor and microscopic examination showed a granular cell tumor. Immunohistochemical staining for neuron specific enolase and S100 protein was positive, and it was suggested that the granular cell tumor was derived from Schwann cells.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate T2 changes in the central nervous system of solvent misusers and to validate a classification of white matter changes (restricted, intermediate and diffuse) proposed in our previous study by visual inspection of magnetic resonance images. T2 values were calculated from the intensity measurements at nine regions in the brain of eight solvent misusers, six of whom showed white matter changes on MRI (two patients for each type), compared with age and gender-matched controls. The misusers with white matter changes on MRI showed significantly prolonged T2 in the centrum semiovale (p= 0.002), periventricular white matter (p= 0.016), internal capsule (p= 0.040), and cerebellar white matter surrounding the dentate nucleus (p= 0.001) and shortened T2 in the thalamus (p= 0.025) compared to controls by ANOVA with post hoc comparison of Scheffe. In addition, each type of white matter changes showed different distribution of T2 changes corresponding to the findings from visual inspection. These results confirmed T2 prolongation in the white matter with T2 shortening in the thalamus of solvent misusers with white matter changes, and provided further support for our classification of white matter changes.

Notes: Aims. To assess seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus, injecting drug use, unsafe sexual behaviours, self-mutilation and tattoos in patients attending a drug and alcohol treatment centre in Japan. Design. Cross-sectional survey. Setting. The work was carried out at the National Sanitarium of Shimousa, Chiba, Japan, a 32-bed inpatient centre specializing in drug and alcohol treatment. Measurements. Laboratory analyses for HIV antibody, hepatitis C antibody, hepatitis B antigen and antibody; questionnaires for history of sexual activities, needle and syringe use; physical examination with assessment of self-amputated finger joints, tattoos, scars from lacerations and cigarette burns. Findings. No patients tested positive for anti-HIV. The seroprevalence of anti-HCV positives was 53.8% of methamphetamine-dependent patients, 18.4% of solvent-dependent patients and 5.6% of alcohol-dependent patients. Past needle sharing was reported by 82.1% of methamphetamine-dependent patients, 18.4% of solvent-dependent patients and 5.6% of alcohol-dependent patients. A history of syringe sharing was reported by 87.2% of methamphetamine-dependent patients. More than two-thirds of all patients reported contact with commercial sex workers. Casual sexual contacts were more common among solvent and methamphetamine-dependent patients than those dependent on alcohol. Tattoos and cigarette burns were more common among methamphetamine and solvent-dependent patients than among alcohol-dependent patients. Among the methamphetamine-dependent patients, 20.5% reported self-amputated finger joints compared with none in the other patient groups. Conclusions. HCV prevalence is a significant problem among methamphetamine users in Japan, probably because of a high rate of needle and/or syringe sharing. Although HIV infection is currently negligible, the very high rate of needle and syringe sharing could give rise to a significant increase in the HIV rate among drug users in the future.

Notes: Instead of the conventional sol-gel process in which heat treatment is used to form a dense composite film after dipping/withdrawing a substrate into/from the sol, a new sol-gel process incorporating ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at ambient temperature has been attempted to improve the alkaline corrosion resistance of aluminum. A sol-gel film prepared by UV irradiation at ambient temperature indicated that alkaline corrosion resistance is superior in the range of 2.4 times to 2.6 times that of the conventional composite film heated at 573 K. The densification of the coating layer due to the elimination of residual organics induced by photoexcitation was responsible for the improvement in alkaline corrosion resistance. The high alkaline corrosion resistance of the irradiated film may be attributed to the formation of a dense coating layer and the self-repairing action caused by repetition for preparation and dissolution of the reactant in the penetrating path of NaOH solution into the composite film.

Notes: To improve the alkaline corrosion resistance of aluminum, composite films were prepared that consisted of a porous layer of anodically grown aluminum oxide filled with zirconium oxide, with a zirconium oxide coating layer that was deposited thereon via the sol—gel process, using a dip-coating technique. The alkaline corrosion resistance of these composite films was extremely improved when this coating layer was placed on an anodic oxide film. Comparisons of the composite film and conventional anodic oxide film showed that the alkaline corrosion resistance of the composite film was increased by a factor of 24–50. Because these composite films, which have high corrosion resistance, indicated a vibration phenomenon of voltage in the duration time curve of the electromotive force measurement, the composite film had a self-repairing action for alkaline corrosion.

Notes: Cerium(III) sulfide (Ce2S3) powder was synthesized via the sulfurization of ceria (CeO2) powder using carbon disulfide gas. Single-phase α-Ce2S3 could be formed via sulfurization at 973 K for 28.8 ks. The preparation of α-Ce2S3 became feasible at low temperature, in comparison to sulfurization using hydrogen sulfide gas. According to the fact that the formation of α-Ce2S3 was accelerated by the addition of carbon black to the CeO2 powder, carbothermic reduction was considered to become a dominant reaction, as the temperature increased. To obtain the activation energy for the densification of β-Ce2S3 powder, which was prepared by vacuum heating α-Ce2S3, the data of densification by hot pressing was analyzed by a kinetic equation that was proposed by other researchers. As a result, the sintering behavior could be best explained by a grain-boundary-diffusion mechanism that had an apparent activation energy of 382 kJ/mol.

Notes: Hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium were attempted by a sol-gel process combined with conventional heat treatment and with UV irradiation at ambient temperature after dipping/ withdrawing a substrate into/from the sol. X-ray diffraction data showed that a coating film prepared by heat treatment was amorphous and crystallized in Ca5(PO4)3(OH) at a temperature of 773–973 K. The infrared spectra for coating films that have been prepared by heat treatment at a temperature of 573–873 K were in fair agreement with those for a coating film prepared by UV irradiation. After ethylene oxide sterilization, the cytotoxicity of coating film decreased with increasing irradiation time in UV irradiation, whereas it decreased with increasing temperature in conventional heat treatment. In comparisons between ethylene oxide sterilization and autoclave sterilization, the coating film sterilized by autoclave had much lower cytotoxicity than that sterilized by ethylene oxide. Furthermore, an animal test in the transfemoral drill hole on a rat for 4 weeks was examined using an implant prepared by heat treatment and autoclave sterilization. The sol-gel-coated titanium had slightly higher bone apposition than uncoated titanium as a control material.

Notes: Cerium monosulfide (CeS) powder was synthesized by the reduction of Ce2S3 powder with metallic Ce, which was obtained from ceria (CeO2) powder using carbon disulfide (CS2) gas. To obtain the maximum amount of CeS from a mixture of Ce2S3 and Ce, an excess amount of metallic Ce, a stoichiometric composition, was necessary in the synthesis at 1273 K for 10.8 ks. The preliminary sintering experiments also were performed using a synthetic CeS powder containing a small amount of Ce, Ce2O2S, and β-Ce2S3 as impurities. It was found that the oxygen content in the sintered compact decreases gradually as the sintering temperature increases, because of the removal of the impurities due to the evaporation of the volatile CeO. Single-phase CeS was formed by sintering at 2173 K. To evaluate the activation energy for densification of single-phase CeS, a CeS powder was prepared by milling an initial sintered compact and was used as an ingredient for hot-press experiments. Densification data during hot-press sintering were analyzed using a kinetic equation, showing that boundary diffusion is a rate-limiting process. The results suggest that this boundary diffusion model can explain well the densification data, with an apparent activation energy of 479 kJ·mol-1.

Notes: Chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) had been documented in a patient with atrial septal defect for 7 years. A right atrial separation procedure was performed for ablation of chronic AF, concomitant with repair of the atrial septal defect, and followed by atrial electrophysiological mapping. A horizontal transectional incision extending to the borders of the atrial septum and the tricuspid annulus was made. Cryolesions of the atrial isthmus between the margin of the upper incision and the tricuspid valve annulus were created at -60†C for 2 minutes at a time. After the operation, the patient had restored normal sinus rhythm during a subsequent follow-up period of 48 months.

Notes: Abstract An 80-year-old man suffering from angina on exertion due to stenosis of the left main coronary artery, heart failure due to mitral valve regurgitation, and an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) was successfully operated on with simultaneous surgical procedures. A coronary cineangiography revealed 90% stenosis of the left main coronary artery in segment 5, and 99% and 90% stenosis in segments 2 and 4AV, respectively, of the right coronary artery. Left ventriculography and aortography showed moderate mitral valve regurgitation and the presence of a fusiform-shaped AAA with a maximum diameter of 6 cm. It was thought that insertion of an intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) would prove difficult due to AAA; therefore, simultaneous surgery combining triple coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), mitral valve plasty, and prosthetic replacement of the AAA was undertaken. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and subsequent angiography showed good patency of all coronary bypass grafts and the abdominal prosthesis, along with the disappearance of mitral regurgitation. This patient's clinical course suggests that an extended surgical procedure is effective for the treatment of complicated cardiovascular disease, even in very elderly patients.
