    Notes: We study the coverage dependence of surface diffusion for chainlike molecules by the fluctuating-bond model with a Monte Carlo dynamics. The model includes short-ranged excluded volume interactions between different chains as well as an intrachain bond angle potential to describe the chain stiffness. Our primary aim is to consider the role played by chain stiffness and the resulting memory effects in tracer diffusion, and in particular their role in the effective tracer diffusion barrier EAT extracted from the well-known Arrhenius form. We show that the memory effects in tracer diffusion become more pronounced at an increasing coverage as a result of packing requirements. Increasing the chain flexibility furthermore has the same overall effect as increasing the chain length, namely, they both increase EAT. We then analyze the influence of memory effects on EAT and find that, for a single diffusing chain, about 20% of EAT arises from temperature variations in the memory effects, while only the remaining part comes from thermally activated chain segment movements. At a finite coverage, the memory contribution in EAT is even larger and is typically about 20%–40%. Further studies with chains of different lengths lead to a conclusion that, for a single diffusing chain, the memory contribution in EAT decreases along with an increasing chain length and is almost negligible in the case of very long chains. Finally, we close this work by discussing our results in light of recent experimental work as regards surface diffusion of long DNA molecules on a biological interface. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The deep-level photoluminescence (PL) emission in the 1.1 eV spectral region in p-type CdTe:Cl polycrystalline samples was studied as a function of the excitation laser power and temperature. The relatively broad 1.1 eV PL band has a nonsymmetrical shape which can be easily changed by varying the excitation laser power. Detailed analysis of the line shape shows that the 1.1 eV emission contains two distinct separate bands. These two bands have their zero-phonon peaks located at 1.08 and 1.17 eV, respectively, and they have quite different half-widths. A donor–acceptor (DA) pair model with a deep donor and a deep acceptor with ED and EA both (approximately-greater-than)0.5 eV is proposed to explain the observed experimental findings. In this model the 1.08 and 1.17 eV bands are formed as a DA recombination between pairs of the nearest neighbors, and between pairs of the next-nearest neighbors, respectively. It is concluded that the acceptor in these pairs must be an interstitial atom. One possible realization for this kind of a DA pair is the VTe–Tei complex, where VTe is acting as a donor and Tei as an acceptor. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The paper discusses the smallest obtainable parameter errors (variances) in the interpretation with the least-squares method. Useful approximations of the sum of squares contained in the minimum error expressions are obtained using results of numerical integration. The approximations lead to especially simple results for long interpretation profiles, when the parameter errors are proportional to the square root of the point separation.Formulae are developed and examples shown for minimum error calculation in gravimetric interpretation with the cylindrical model and in magnetic interpretation with the two-dimensional plate model. Smallest errors are obtained when the interpretation profile is chosen around the anomaly maximum except for dip and depth extent interpretation of magnetic plates.

    Notes: The suggested interpretation technique is based on discrete linear filtering of VLF data. The output of the described filtering results is expressed in terms of an equivalent current density at a specified depth that would cause the measured magnetic field. The most practical six-point filter gives an accuracy of 8%. The filter is an extension of the commonly used Fraser filter to process VLF dip-angle data.Filtering the same data set for various depths gives an idea about the change of current density with depth. Areas with high current-density correspond to good conductors. The conductor dip can also be determined.The use of the technique is illustrated on theoretical and field examples. In all cases a good correlation with original models and other types of geophysical measurements was obtained. As shown in the last example, the filtering technique is also applicable in interpretation of other electromagnetic methods.

    Notes: By using two components of anomalous magnetic fields and a formulation including complex numbers it is possible to calculate the position parameters of thick plates and both magnetization and position of thin plates directly from any two or three points of anomaly profiles. The formulae (interpretation operators) allow automatic topographic corrections to be made. The new two-component operators give more reliable results than the conventional methods of interpretation. The variance of the parameter values obtained with subsequent points of an anomaly measures directly, the total error of interpretation.The application of infinite thin plate operators to a long profile results in characteristic patterns, from which the estimation of the number of plates and their approximate position is possible.
