Description / Table of Contents: A contribution to the question of the mechanism governing the formation of anodically generated hard oxide layersThe authors have investigated the mechanism governing the formation of hard oxide layers generated under different formation condition by means of a modified GS method at temperatures between - 1 and + 1°C. With the aid of numerous structure exposures, obtained with the ordinary microscope or with the electronic microscope and reproduced here, it is demonstrated in a visual manner that the course of the formation of the hard oxide layer can be sub-divided, from a morphological point of view, into four characteristic periods which, depending on the working conditions, follow each other successively and provide a good explanation for the formation of the layer.
