Notes: Laser spot scanning studies of single-crystalline p-InSe in contact with a neutral aqueous solution reveal a dramatic difference in lateral resolution between the material "as cleaved'' and after platinization by brief dipping in a dilute H2PtCl6 solution. A model is developed to explain these observations, and the resolution is calculated as a function of the diffusion coefficient and the life time of minority carriers, and of the charge transfer rate. The improvement of the resolution is found to be due to the increase of the rate of hydrogen evolution at the illuminated semiconductor by Pt catalyst. The model also provides numerical values for the charge transfer rate in the noncatalyzed and the catalyzed cases.

Notes: Abstract We have examined the occurrence and distribution of endocrine cells storing serotonin and the regulatory peptides somatostatin, glicentin, peptide YY in rectal mucosa on 16 patients with prolapse or intussusception of the rectum. There were no significant differences compared with normal rectal mucosa. Our results do not support the assumption that these endocrine cells of the rectum are involved in the pathophysiology of rectal prolapse.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-one patients suffering from rectal prolapse (n=15) or internal rectal procidentia (n=6) were investigated clinically and by anorectal manometry prior to and six months following rectopexy. Rectal prolapse was associated with incontinence in 67% (10/15) of the patients preoperatively. The moderately or severely incontinent patients had lower than normal maximum anal resting pressures (MAP) and those with severe incontinence also had lower than normal maximum squeeze pressure (MSP). Postoperatively only 20% (3/15) of the patients remained incontinent and none of them suffered severe incontinence. MAP values increased significantly indicating that improvement of the function of the internal anal sphincter may be one of the factors contributing to better continence. Rectal sensibility was impaired in patients with rectal prolapse as compared to 15 controls. There was no postoperative change. Patients with internal rectal procidentia had normal MAP and MSP and no postoperative change could be demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract Of 71 patients with paradoxical sphincter reaction, 54 had symptoms of constipation or outlet obstruction and 17 were incontinent. The patients were investigated with defecography, colon transit time, anorectal manometry and electromyography. Ninety-six percent of the patients had additional changes in anorectal anatomy and physiology; 70% of the patients had abnormal defecography and 42% had delayed colon transit time. Decreased maximal anal pressure (MAP) and maximal squeeze pressure (MSP), indicating impaired function of the anal sphincters might be one reason for incontinence in patients with paradoxical sphincter reaction. The paradoxical reaction occurred in the puborectalis muscle and in three tested sites in the external sphincter. It is sufficient to record the EMG activity in one muscle and at one point to diagnose a paradoxical sphincter reaction. The absence of a normal closing reflex on electromyography is evidence for a paradoxical sphincter reaction. Denervation was more pronounced in the external sphincter than in the puborectalis muscle. The right pudendal nerve was subjected to damage more often than the left nerve.

Notes: Abstract Films of polycrystallinen-CdSe were prepared onto titanium substrates by electrodeposition from an aqueous bath. The materials were studied as photoelectrodes in a photoelectrochemical cell, using Fe(CN) 6 3−/4− as redox couple. The CdSe electrode deteriorated within less than one hour due to photocorrosion. Depositing a thin coating of indium hexacyanoferrate(III) caused relatively small effects on parameters like conversion efficiency and fill factor, but increased the photostability dramatically, with no sign of decrease in cell current over 10h.

Notes: Abstract Seven patients (6 women, 1 man) with severe idiopathic chronic constipation, who underwent surgery with subtotal colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis, were investigated for the occurrence and density of nerve fibres, immunoreactive to different neuropeptides in the mucosa, submucosa, ganglia and smooth muscle in fresh specimens from the colon ascendens, the colon transversum and the colon descendens-sigmoideum. The following substances were studied: enkephalin, substance P, somatostatin, neuropeptide Y, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide, bombesin, motilin, tyrosine hydroxylase, dynorphin and galanin. Nerve fibres immunoreactive to CGRP occurred in large numbers in the myenteric ganglia of the patients with severe idiopathic chronic constipation, whereas in the myenteric ganglia of the control cases they only occurred in low numbers. In two patients there was no detectable motilin immunoreactivity and in one patient only sparse in the mucosa and the smooth muscle. The other neuropeptides investigated occurred in the density and distribution previously reported in the normal gut. With the present technique there were indications that patients with severe idiopathic chronic constipation have a significant difference in the occurrence of immunoreactive nerve fibres to CGRP and motilin compared to control patients.

Notes: Abstract Sixty-nine patients with enterocele on defaecography, and 128 patients without enterocele but with other abnormal findings were investigated to identify concomitant colorectal disorders and their relationship with enterocele. Of the 69 patients with enterocele, 38 (55%) had concomitant rectal intususception and 26 (38%) rectal prolapse. Abnormal physiological findings on anorectal manometry and electrophysiology were more common in patients with enterocele. Previous hysterectomy increased the risk of enterocele formation. The study has demonstrated that patients with enterocele should be investigated thoroughly for other lesions before treatment is planned. Further investigation of the role of enterocele in patients with defaecation disorders is required.
