Notes: Abstract Mosaic trisomy of chromosome 7 is known to occur in a variety of non-neoplastic hyperproliferative disorders. In long-term cell cultures established from rheumatic synovium with mosaic trisomy 7, we observed a continuous increase in the proportion of cells with trisomy 7 to over 50% by the 10th in vitro passage. Simultaneous in situ hybridization with a repetitive chromosome-7-specific DNA probe and fluorescent Ki-67 labelling showed a strong correlation between trisomy 7 and an elevated proliferation index in cultured rheumatic synovial cells. Moreover, we observed a fraction of rapidly proliferating cells with up to eight copies of chromosome 7 as the sole cytogenetic change. Frequent somatic pairing of centromeres of two chromosomes 7 in interphase nuclei suggests either atypical non-disjunction with a persisting centromere or selective endoreduplication of chromosome 7.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In Germany the adjustment of ski bindings is based on the tibia head diameter. This method, according to the IAS-adjustment specifications, refers to the bending stability of the tibia which shows a high correlation to the tibia head diameter. In the present study we tested whether the tibia head diameter correlates with the ultimate strength of knee ligaments. Therefore, the maximum tension force of the medial collateral ligament, the anterior and posterior cruciate were measured using 6 cadaver knee specimens. Only the medial collateral ligament strength showed a positive correlation with the tibia head diameter. The maximum tension forces of anterior and posterior cruciate variied individually, but they had no obvious correlation to the individual tibia head diameter. The mean maximum tensile force was 720 N for MCL, 433 N for ACL and 890 N for PCL. The tibia head diameter method for setting of ski bindings seems not to be suitable as prevention against knee ligament injuries in skiing. In order to reduce this type of injuries, we need not only new adjustment specifications but also new binding constructions.

Notes: Various x-ray contrast materials, barium sulphate (BaSO4) and zirconium oxide (ZrO2), were tested for their radioactivity by means of a gamma spectrometer. While BaSO4 showed no detectable radiation emission, the ZrO2 materials of various makes showed slight to partially high radioactive emission. From all zirconium oxides, only the pharmaceutic agent OPTIPUR® (MERCK) showed no detectable radioactivity. Taking into account that these x-ray contrast materials remain in the body for decades as components of the bone cement, it would seem prudent to urge cement manufacturers to substitute high purity radiation-free zirconium in place of radioactive zirconium oxide.
