Notes: [Auszug] SOCRATES once likened books to pictures because, "the creatures of the latter art stand before you as if they were alive, but if you ask them a question, they look very solemn and say not a word". To an argumentative old man the lack of response was deplorable; but to the pictures themselves, had ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE Quincentenary Exhibition in the Diploma Gallery of the Royal Academy throughout the summer is designed to illustrate Leonardo's many interests by means of his own works, particularly his drawings and manuscripts. Notes: [Auszug] IT is a commonplace of criticism that a painting is not only the result of the artist's competence and temperament, but also of his country and period. Thus a Titian could arise nowhere else than in Italy; neither could a Vermeer be found elsewhere than in the Low Countries. The former reflects the ...

Notes: [Auszug] WHEN reviewing last year's Summer Exhibition VV at the Royal Academy, I ventured to say that since intellectual honesty is at the foundations of both science and art, there is no fundamental distinction between them, and that apart from the objectivity of the one and the subjectivity of the other ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN 1942 I attempted1 to explain what I understand .rt to be. Since some of my gossips later took me to task because neither beauty nor truth were mentioned, it may be well to point out that beauty is not essential to a work of art, and that truth is an ambiguous word often used to mean accurate ...

Notes: [Auszug] “CRITICS have always been people less susceptible than other men to the contagion of art. Notes: Summary In this report we demonstrate the immunocytochemical localization of serotonin in endothelial cells of rat coronary vessels and a significant increase in the release of serotonin into the perfusate of Langendorff rat heart preparations during hypoxia. It is suggested that serotonin, localized in endothelial cells, is released during hypoxia and could provide part of a pathophysiological mechanism for vasodilatation to protect the heart from damage due to hypoxia.
