Notes: Examines the determinants of illegal drug arrests based on the 1991data for 48 states in the USA. Major findings indicate that illegal drugarrests have a positive relation with welfare (AFDC) recipients, highschool dropout rates, field police force and other types of crime, and anegative relation with the unemployment rate. Policy implications ofthis study are that to reduce illegal drug crime, the government andparents need to emphasize family values and work ethics, provide qualityeducation and proper counselling, increase field police size or makepolice more productive, and reduce other types of crime.

Notes: The paper analyzes selected social indicators to determine whether people in Taiwan have become better or worse off during the process of economic growth. The authors find that residents in Taiwan experienced better education, more political freedom, better health care, better nutrition, more welfare programs and benefits, greater home ownership, improved environment, more income inequality, more crimes, more traffic congestion, and more divorces. Therefore, economic growth brought mixed outcomes in social development. The impacts of the recent change in the regime on economic growth, federal budget, domestic and overseas investment spending, employment, the financial market, corruption and bribery, and social justice may deserve further study.

Notes: The dramatic decline in the number of welfare recipients in the USA is examined. The unique features of this article include the use of time series data, the consideration of different welfare benefits and socioeconomic variables, and the application of the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model. Finds that less benefits including cash, food stamps, and Medicaid, lower percentage of births to unmarried mothers, lower dropout rates, lower unemployment rates, more budgets for administrative expense, and welfare reform are expected to reduce welfare caseloads. If the recent unemployment rate of 6.1 percent persists for one year, welfare caseloads would rise by 525,300 from the year 2000 level, holding other factors constant.

Notes: The US 1996 Welfare Reform Act creating the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and replacing the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS) is discussed and reviewed. Based on the latest data for 35 states, the regression results estimated by the weighted least squares indicate that welfare caseload reductions are mainly attributable to lower unemployment rates, lower benefits, more education, and more sanctions. The administrative expense per welfare recipient ratio is insignificant, probably because some human efforts cannot be measured or because the positive and the negative effects of administrative expense on welfare rolls cancel each other.

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of income inequality on economic growth in the US. Design/methodology/approach - This paper applies the endogenous growth model including human capital and technological progress. The generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) technique is applied to estimate regression parameters. The number of patents granted is chosen to measure technological progress. Percentage of people 25 years old and over who have completed 4 years of college or more is selected to measure human capital. Findings - The findings show that a higher Gini index hurts economic growth. Economic growth has a positive relationship with the growth in civilian employment, investment spending, technological progress, and human capital. When three other indicators of income inequality are considered, similar conclusions can be reached. Research limitations/implications - A major implication is that a deterioration of inequality would be harmful to economic growth. Originality/value - Major contributions of the paper are to consider human capital in the model and different measures of inequality in empirical work.

Notes: Based on the GARCH model, the divorce rate in Taiwan is found to be negatively affected by the fertility rate and male earnings and positively influenced by the male unemployment rate, female earnings, female education, and institutional changes providing married women more protection in child custody, child support and alimony and property rights in divorce. The conventional OLS regression method yields poor statistical outcomes.

Notes: Abstract. Five different production functions for 50 states and the District of Columbia in the U.S. are estimated and compared based on the 1987 data from the Census of Manufacturers. The Cobb-Douglas function can be rejected. The CES yields a negative value of the elasticity of substitution (σ). In the translog function, the coefficient of logK t has a wrong sign and is insignificant. The coefficient of K t 0.5 L t 0.5 in the generalized Leontief function is insignificant at the 5% level. It appears that the new CES function (Bairam, 1989, 1991) yields the best statistical results: σ is estimated to be 1.56, and total output elasticity ranges from 0.85 to 1.12, which can partly be explained by different values of the K/L ratio.

Notes: Abstract In this study, we tested if long-distance rates among AT&T, MCI, and US Sprint between New York City and six major SMSAs during 1980–91 have converged. Empirical findings show that rates have converged over time, that rate ratios or differences increased under price cap, and that distance does not have any impact on rate convergence. The variables of TIME and price cap (CAP) have greater impacts on rate convergence for AT&T/US Sprint than AT&T/MCI. Regression results based on pooled cross-section and time-series data yield better results.
