Notes: Objective Gestational diabetes is associated with increased risk of developing noninsulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) later in life. By the time that a diagnosis of NIDDM is established, functional disturbances in the vascular system may be observed. This study was planned to assess macro- and microvascular function in nonpregnant women without signs of diabetes two to four years after a pregnancy complicated with gestational diabetes.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting Vascular research laboratory in the obstetric unit of a university hospital.Participants Seventeen nonpregnant, healthy women with a history of gestational diabetes and 20 nonpregnant control women of similar age without previous diabetes. Methods For quantification of the mechanical properties in large arterial vessels the wall movements of the abdominal aorta and left common carotid artery were recorded with an ultrasonic tracking system. Microvascular perfusion in the skin of the hand and foot was recorded by a laser Doppler technique to assess the vasodilatory response induced by transcutaneous acetylcholine. Results Women in the gestational diabetes group showed evidence of increased wall stiffness in the common carotid artery and a lower maximum incremental velocity of the pulsatile vessel diameter change in both aorta and carotid artery compared with controls. Acetylcholine induced vasodilatation in both hand and foot was lower in women with previous gestational diabetes compared with controls. Conclusion Abnormal vascular function was found in asymptomatic women with a history of gestational diabetes. It is speculated that these abnormalities might be early evidence of vascular complications associated with subsequent NIDDM.

Notes: The expressions of 78 protein kinases, 24 protein phosphatases and 31 phosphoproteins were investigated by Kinetworks™ analysis in brain and spinal cord tissue of transgenic mice over-expressing G93A mutant superoxide dismutase (mSOD), a murine model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the brains of affected mSOD mice, we observed increased expression of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA, 111% increase compared with control), and protein phosphatase 2B Aα-catalytic subunit (calcineurin, 109% increase), and reductions in the levels of PAK3 (76% decrease) and protein phosphatase 2C Cβ-subunit (32% decrease). Increased Ser259 phosphorylation of Raf1 (126% increase) in mSOD mice correlated with higher expression of p73 Raf1 (147% increase). There was also increased p73 Raf1 (69% increase) and Ser259 phosphorylation (45% increase) in the spinal cords of mSOD mice. While adducin underwent enhanced phosphorylation (αS724, 90% increase; γS662, 290% increase) in mSOD brain, its phosphorylation was lower in the mSOD spinal cord (αS724, 53% decrease; γS662, 46% decrease). In spinal cords of affected mSOD mice, we also observed elevated expression of casein kinase 1δ (CK1δ, 157% increase), JAK2 (84% increase), PKA (183% increase), protein kinase C (PKC) δ (123% increase), p124 PKCµ (142% increase), and RhoA kinase (221% increase), and enhanced phosphorylation of extracellular regulated kinases 1 (ERK1, T202/Y204, 90% increase), and 2 (ERK2, T185/Y187, 73% increase), p38 MAP kinase (T180/Y182, 1570% increase), and PKBα (T308, 154% increase; S473, 61% increase). There was also reduced phosphorylation of RB (S780, 45% decrease; S807/S811, 65% decrease), Src (Y418, 63% decrease) and p40 SAPK/JNKβ (T183/Y185, 43% decrease). Variability in the expression of kinases, phosphatases and phosphorylation of their substrates was observed even in mutant animals having a similar phenotype. The expression and phosphorylation differences between mSOD and control mice were dissimilar to those between ALS patients and controls. This finding indicates that the activation of protein kinases and phosphoproteins is different with neuron loss in the mSOD mouse compared with that seen in patients with the sporadic form of ALS.

Notes: The purpose of this research was to describe perceptions of infant health, caregiving at home, and help seeking by mothers of low birthweight (LBW) infants (n= 30) and mothers of normal birthweight infants (n= 30). In this descriptive study, data were analyzed through multiple regression, t tests, and content analysis of responses to researcher-constructed questionnaires. There were statistically significant relationships between: infant health and both confidence in caregiving (R2= 0.18, p 〈 0.001) and caregiver burden (R2= 0.29, p 〈 0.001); preparation for caregiving and confidence in caregiving (R2= 0.10, p 〈 0.05); and confidence in caregiving and caregiver burden (R2= 0.12, p 〈 0.01). Compared with mothers of normal birthweight infants, mothers of LBW infants perceived poorer infant health, t (58) =–2.02, p= 〈 0.05, and more caregiver burden, t (58) = 3.50, p= 〈 0.001. Mothers reported seeking help from a variety of resources, mostly nonprofessional for questions on infant care or nonserious infant health problems, and mostly physicians for questions on serious infant health problems. Nurses can use knowledge of mothers' perceptions of infant health, caregiving, and help seeking to facilitate mothers' management of caregiving and resource use.

Notes: This paper utilizes Genetic Programming(GP) and Genetic Algorithm(GA) to analyzeexperiment data. The purpose of this research is to establish a function model of the data. The coremethodology of this research is using GP to get the approximate model first, and then optimizes theparameters and enhance the fitness value of the model by using GA. To validate this method, twoexamples are given: one is the reconstruction of permeability-strain equation of the rock inliterature[1]; another example is the function search automatically of the wire cable isolatorexperiment data. In the process of programming of parse tree, this paper adopted a new way thatdifferent from three traditional methods, the parse tree is described by matrix of special size, moresignificantly, this new method makes the genetic operation of crossover and mutation intuitionstic, even the pellucid Matlab programming language could implement it

Notes: Blank holder force (BHF) plays an important role in sheet metal forming. Previousstudies demonstrated that variable blank holder forces can improve the cold formability ofsteel blank, but the research on the application of variable blank holder force in warm formingof magnesium sheet forming has not been well investigated. In this study, the mechanicalproperty of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet is measured through some uniaxial tensile tests. Inorder to obtain the variational rule of the BHF, a mathematical model of BHF is deducedbased on the energy theory. The variational rule of the BHF over the punch stroke is analyzed. Finally, three profiles of the BHF curve are designed, and the numerical simulation of warmdeep drawing process of magnesium alloy sheet is also performed. A suitable variable blankholder force scheme is obtained through comparison among three results of simulation. Thesimulation indicates that the limiting drawing ratio of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet can beimproved from 3.0 to 3.5 with the suitable blank holder force varied by an inverted V curve

Notes: Numerical simulation technology has been used widely in plastic forming area. However, the simulation of increasingly complex forming process leads to the generation of vast quantities ofdata, which implies much useful knowledge. Consequently domain knowledge is very significant toproduct design and process development in metal plastic forming area. The paper presented a newrobust optimization method based on knowledge discovery from numerical simulation. Firstly, theknowledge discovery model from numerical simulation is established. In this model, interval-basedrule presentation is adopted to describe the uncertainty of design parameters quantitatively to enhancethe design robustness. Secondly, the optimization process based on knowledge discovery andmanagement is presented, and genetic arithmetic is used to obtain the robust optimization parameter. Finally, the application to robust optimization of extrusion-forging processing is analyzed to show thescheme to be effective. The proposed method can overcome the pathologies in simulationoptimization and improve the efficiency & robustness in design optimization

Notes: Abstract A new highly sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination traces of cadmium using Cd-(II)-KI-Crystal Violet system in the presence of Triton X-100-poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) mixture has been developed. The apparent molar absorptivity of the system is 1.77 × 105 1-mol−1 cm−1 and its Sandell's sensitivity is 6.35 × 10−4 μg·Cd·cm2−. Beer's law is obeyed up to 0.32 μg·Cd(II)·ml−1. The method has been applied to determine Cd(II) in waste water, rice and pork meat samples with satisfactory results.
