    Notes: Introduction: Many previous studies have suggested that the high-frequency (HF) power of the heart rate variability may represent cardiac vagal activity although direct evidence of a correlation between the HF and vagal neuronal activity is still lacking. In the present study, we performed a regression analysis of the HF and vagal neurograms. Methods and Results: Experiments were carried out on adult male Sprague-Dawley rats anesthetized with a continuous infusion of pentobarbital sodium. The baroreflex-related vagus neuronal activities were obtained by nerve or single-fiber recordings. The transient baroreflex response was employed to alter vagus neuronal activities using a bolus injection of phenylephrine (PE). On-line power spectral analysis of the heart rate and a vagal neurogram was performed during the acute baroreflex response. During the test period, systemic arterial pressure immediately increased in response to the PE injection, after which the R–R interval (RR), HF (0.6–2.4 Hz), and vagus nerve and unit activities all dramatically increased. Both nerve and unit activities exhibited good correlations (r ≥ 0.7 in all nerve recordings and r ≥ 0.6 in 91% of single-fiber recordings) with the HF. There were insignificant differences between the right- and left-side baroreflex-related vagus nerve recordings. Conclusion: Our present study provides a direct linkage between the HF and vagus neuronal electrical activity in anesthetized rats.

    Notes: The ABX test or matching-to-sample is a discrimination procedure involving presentation of both test and control items, and then presentation of one of the two items as a blind sample. The third (blind sample) must then be identified correctly to match it to the one correct alternative from the inspection phase. We hypothesized that the ABX test might have an advantage over other discrimination methods due to a warm-up effect arising from the inspection phase containing both test and control items. Furthermore, the ABX test might prove generally useful like the triangle test since it can be used when there is no specified attribute to be discriminated. The ABX test was compared to several other discrimination procedures. No advantage was observed in a variety of stimuli varying in complexity and in the difficulty of the discrimination.

    Notes: Abstract High permeability ring-shaped mu metal sheets have been used to enhance magnetic fields in the bore of Bi-based high-T c superconducting coils. The central magnetic fieldB 0, generated by pancake coils placed between mu metal sheets, was measured at liquid nitrogen temperature 77 K. The increasing rate (IR) of the central magnetic fieldB 0 for single pancake coils was from 15 to 63% by using a 0.1 mm thick mu metal sheet. IR was decreased when the originalB 0 value increased. The thickness of mu metal sheets also affected IR. It was found that IR increased as the number of mu metal sheets was increased. In a test double-pancake coil IR reached 101%,B 0 was enhanced from 902 to 1815 G, when the total thickness of mu metal sheets on the top and bottom surface of the coil was 2.0 mm. These results indicate that the well-designed high-permeability materials can significantly enhance the magnetic fields generated by high-T c superconducting coils and magnets.
