    Notes: Electron instabilities of magnetized spherical shell distributions in velocity space with a colder Maxwellian background are investigated analytically with simulations using electrostatic particle codes. The resonant and nonresonant instabilities observed in the particle simulations are in agreement with zeros of the dielectric function, as found from the resonant approximation for waves with an electric field component along the magnetic field or by computation with a root solver code in the case of perpendicular propagation. Saturation of the instabilities is by nonlinear cyclotron resonance with the cold background in the resonant case or by nonstochastic cyclotron harmonic damping by the cold background in the nonresonant case. Instabilities invariably lead to perpendicular acceleration and heating of the cold background to velocities sometimes exceeding the shell velocity.

    Notes: Abstract Grazing by adult female Eurytemora affinis, Acartia tonsa and A. clausi on natural distributions of particles from the Chesapeake Bay has been investigated. During the course of a year's sampling, a wide variety of particle size-biomass distributions were observed as seasonal shifts in detritus, and over 150 algal species occurred. These distributions were grouped into 5 basic types in the analyses of feeding. All three species demonstrated similar capabilities for feeding over a broad range of particle size with selection (higher filtering rates) on larger particles and on biomass peaks. Feeding on multiple-peak distributions resulted in strong selection or “tracking” of each biomass peak with reduced filtering rates between peaks. Evidence is presented which suggests that the copepods first feed on large particles and then successively switch to biomass peaks of the smaller size categories. Comparisons of the feeding behavior of Eurytemora affinis and the Acartia species showing that the Acartia species have greater capabilities for taking large particles may be associated with modifications of their mouth parts for raptorial feeding. The results suggest considerable flexibility in copepod feeding behavior which cannot be explained solely by the mechanism of a fixed sieve.

    Notes: Abstract The grazing of juvenile Eurytemora affinis, Acartia tonsa and A. clausi from the Chesapeake Bay (USA) was investigated using natural particle distributions and freshly caught copepods, live-sorted into stages. Data were analyzed in ≥110 size channels using an electronic particle counter, and filtering rates (FR) were estimated based on total particle removal (mean FR), and that for each size channel (giving maximum FR). Mean and maximum filtering rates increased from NVI (Nauplius Stage VI) through CVI (Copepodid Stage VI). Both rates plotted against weight satisfied a log fit best for A. tonsa, and a linear fit best for E. affinis. Results for A. tonsa were quite variable, apparently due to differences in temperature between experiments. Particle selection was investigated from the shape of the filtering rate curve over particle size. We define selective feeding by a FR curve which is higher in some size categories, and non-selective feeding by a flat FR curve. The general pattern was one of selective feeding in all copepodid stages of the three calanoid copepods investigated. E. affinis tended to “track” biomass peaks while Acartia spp.'s feeding was more variable, including feeding in size ranges of greatest particle concentration, on larger particles, and in other size categories as well. Experiments with nauplii tended to yield flat FR curves, and it may be that selective grazing appears with, or is greatly accentuated by, metamorphosis from NVI to CI (Copepodid Stage I).

    Notes: Summary The biochemical, endocrine, receptor binding, and behavioral effects of the putative dopamine autoreceptor agonist, U-86170F, were evaluated in various in vivo and in vitro models. U-86170F and apomorphine were shown to cause a significant reversal of the effects of γ-butyrolactone (GBL) on dopamine accumulation in mouse striata. In contrast to apomorphine, U-86170F had a ceiling effect on the extent of the reversal of GBL effects (55%), whereas apomorphine had an 82% reversal. The effect on striatal homovanillic acid (HVA) levels was also monitored, and both compounds exerted a similar and significant reduction in striatal HVA. A comparison was made between the effects of intraperitoneal (i.p.) and oral administration of U-86170F in the α-methyl-p-tyrosine (α-MPT)/prolactin model in rats. When administered by the i.p. route, U-86170F suppressed the effects of α-MPT on prolactin level increase, having an ED50 of about 0.03 mg/kg, and when administered by the oral route, its ED50 was approximately 0.1 mg/kg. U-86170F has been shown to be a potent dopamine autoreceptor agonist in the GBL, prolactin, and HVA models, with an effective i.p. dose of approximately 0.03 mg/kg. When evaluated for postsynaptic dopaminergic activity in the reserpinized mouse model, and compared to apomorphine, U-86170F was found to increase locomotor activity, but its maximum effect was only 65% of that attained with apomorphine. Higher doses were needed for postsynaptic effects. In receptor binding studies using cloned D2 receptor preparations, U-86170F was found to exhibit agonist binding properties similar to dopamine as demonstrated by their inhibition of 3H-raclopride binding. Both compounds exhibited biphasic inhibition curves, with U-86170F having Ki values of 7.5 nM and 250 nM, and for dopamine the Ki values were 34.7 nM and 1031 nM. Binding studies conducted in the presence of GTP yielded only one site with Kis of 289 nM and 670 nM, for both U-86170F and dopamine, respectively. The results presented in this report demonstrated that U-86170F is a potent dopamine autoreceptor agonist, with limited activity at the postsynaptic receptor.
