    Notes: Abstract A variety of studies reported in the literature have established that initially well mixed suspensions subjected to non-homogeneous shear flows attain an anisotropic particulate structure. It has also been shown that non-homogeneous shearing causes suspensions of unimodal spheres to demix, i.e., gradients in solids concentration are formed. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of non-homogeneous shear flows on suspensions of bimodal particles, and specifically, to determine if the solids concentration gradients which develop are accompanied by size segregation of the coarse with respect to the fine fraction. We used the simplest and most direct methods to determine the relative solids concentrations: visual observation of tracer particles in transparent suspensions and physical separation of the coarse and fine solid fractions. Three different types of non-homogeneous shear flows were examined, and in each case the data support two main conclusions: 1) suspended particles migrate from regions of high shear rate to regions of low shear rate, and 2) the coarse fraction of particles migrates much faster than the fine fraction, leading to size segregation of initially well-mixed suspensions. While the former conclusion is consistent with other studies reported in the literature, to our knowledge this paper provides the first data supporting and, to a limited extent, quantifying the latter conclusion.

    Notes: Abstract Small deformation viscoelastic response has been investigated in a series of five elastomeric binders, both with and without nonreinforcing filler. The filled systems were found to be both nonlinear viscoelastic and thermorheologically complex. These behaviors suggest the existence of a secondary relaxation process. The origin of this secondary process was modeled as an interphase of polymer weakly adsorbed on the filler surface. Decomposition of timetemperature shift factors for filled vs unfilled properties showed that the mechanical response of this interphase followed Arrhenius behavior. Measured activation energies ranged from 24 to 76kJ/mole, depending on the cohesiveenergy density of the elastomeric binder. Finally, these activation energies were related to the strain amplitude dependent nonlinear factors for the polymeric systems which contained no polar groups in their backbone, suggesting that in these systems both the nonlinear and thermorheologically complex nature of the filled materials' viscoelastic response originate from relaxations within this interphase.

    Notes: A high-torque rheometer was used to facilitate the polycondensation of 4-[5-amino-6-hydroxybenzoxazol-2-yl]benzoic acid (ABA) with trimesic acid and 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(4-carboxylatophenyl)adamantane to yield two- and three-dimensional benzobisoxazole polymers, respectively. Although the resultant polymer dopes exhibited improved homogeneity compared to polymer dopes previously prepared in glassware, improved polymer solution viscosities were not achieved. Fibers spun from the two- and three-dimensional polymers did not show a significant increase in compressive strength compared to fibers of the linear or one-dimensional benzobisoxazole polymer derived from the homopolymerization of ABA. Morphological studies of the polymer fibers and films by wide-angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy strongly indicated more lateral disorder and a more isotropic character for the three-dimensional structures compared to the one-dimensional structures. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Digital image processing was used to experimentally determine the two-dimensional pair distribution function of suspensions of solid spheres (cross-linked polystyrene spheres in silicone oil) and of composite materials with spherical inclusions (surface-treated glass spheres in unsaturated polyester resin). An assembly of optical devices and computers was used to obtain and store images of two-phase materials. Software was developed to analyze the information in the images in order to determine the pair distribution function. The technique developed is simple yet powerful, and with some modification could easily be adapted for the analysis of other multiphase systems.

    Notes: This paper describes work done to study the potential hazards of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) based formulations. Friction and drop weight tests were performed on various GAP propellants, GAP mixed with different ingredients, and at different steps during processing of a propellant mix. The results showed that, under certain conditions, GAP formulations can be highly friction and impact sensitive.
