Notizen: Summary The ultrastructural features of five biopsies of gliomatosis cerebri (GC) are described. Four main types of tumour cells are seen: anaplastic astrocytes poor in organelles with a variable amount of glial microfilaments; atypical oligodendrocytes with scanty cytoplasm in which microtubules are present; intermediate forms with aboundant cytoplasm rich in organelles, with microtubules and microfilaments; and small cells with round nuclei and a very scanty rim of cytoplasm. In two cases several concentrically folded cytoplasmic lamellae of glial processes were arranged either around themselves or around the perikaryon of other cells. This ultrasructural study indicates that GC is a neoplastic process of small undifferentiated elements, transitional forms of astroglia (to oligodendroglia) and anaplastic cells of astrocytic origin in all stages of development.

Notizen: Abstract Diffuse-reflectance Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopic (DRIFT) microanalysis (10 μg samples) of a selected series of flavonoids was studied, comparing to transmission FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the same samples at the mg level. DRIFT was shown to be a useful, sample-saving and reliable IR technique for the structural analysis and compound identification of the mainSilybum genus 3-OH-flavonolignans (silybin, isosilybin, silydianin, silychristin and isosilychristin) and the dihydroflavonol taxifolin.

Notizen: Summary For a histochemical study of ubiquinones in newborn and adult mice, the hydroquinone-tetrazolium-reductase reaction was performed in cryostat serial sections of the central cerebellar nuclei. This enzyme was studied in various structures at different stages of postnatal development. The present study shows that in the central nuclei the ubiquinones display less activity during development than in the adult mouse. The histochemical maturation is slow as compared with Purkinje cells, the rest of the molecular layer, the motor nuclei of the brain stem and the anterior horns of the medulla. The relationship of these histochemical findings and the metabolic significance of changes in the patterns of ubiquinones is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Melorheostosis is a benign, rare, congenital disorder of hyperostosis of one or more bones. In this report, we describe a 5-year-old girl with melorheostosis of the left iliac wing, femur, and tibia who developed severe hypertension secondary to left renal artery stenosis. Numerous soft tissue and vascular anomalies have been reported in patients with melorheostosis. To our knowledge this is the first case where renal artery stenosis has been associated with melorheostosis. Several hypotheses for bone and vascular involvement in melorheostosis are reviewed.

Notizen: 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (EC 1.1.1.34), the major rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterogenesis, was studied in epithelial cells isolated in a villus to crypt gradient from chick duodenum, jejunum and ileum, in order to resolve the apparent controversy that exists on the anatomical localization of sterol synthesis in the intestine. Consistent separation was demonstrated by using the marker enzymes alkaline phosphatase, specific to the villus cells, and thymidine kinase, specific to the crypt cells. No relative difference in stability was observed, as shown by the equal distribution of acid phosphatase. Cells were 90-95 per cent viable. The highest specific activity of reductase was located in the microsomal fraction (41 per cent of the total). The mitochondria had lower specific activity (8 per cent of the total). The distribution of reductase activity in epithelial cells of the villus-crypt axis was also studied. The specific activity in each cell fraction from chick duodenum was clearly lower than that in jejunum and ileum. The jejunal and ileal crypt regions showed lower specific activity than the villus cells. About 70 per cent of total reductase activity was found in cells from the upper and the mid villus fraction in each intestinal segment.
