Conclusions 1. Deformation of alloys of Fe+18% Cr+9% Ni and Fe+18% Cr+12% Ni at room temperature is not accompanied by the martensitic transformation; at −196 to −269°C the amount of α-phase formed is determined mainly by the magnitude of deformation. 2. Increasing nickel concentrations inhibit the martensitic transformation, and in alloys with 17% Cr and 23% Ni no transformation is observed down to a temperature of −269°C, which is probably involved with the increasing energy of packing defects in this alloy.
