Notes: A new simplified model is proposed to mimic some properties of the glass transition. The physical system undergoing glass transition is modeled as Brownian particle diffusing in one- or two-dimensional space with obstacles. In one dimension obstacles are points which cannot be crossed by Brownian particles, in two dimensions obstacles are randomly distributed sections of straight lines which are impenetrable for the diffusing particle. The obstacles have a finite lifetime τ. After time τ the obstacle disappears and reappears in some new random position. In another modification of the model the obstacle barrier can be opened for short time and then closed again. Both cases are studied for one-dimensional diffusion, while in two dimensions only the first modification of the model is considered. The main feature of the model is that the mean lifetime of obstacles τ is connected with the diffusion coefficient of the Brownian particle through the coupling equation Dτ=K, with K being the coupling constant. This idea is borrowed from the theory of reptations in polymer liquids. Both analytical calculations and results of computer simulations are presented. The model is shown to reflect some of the features of glass transition. It was found that a slight change in the model, i.e., opening and closing of a barrier in the same position versus transfer of a barrier to a new position, leads to a drastic change in the diffusion kinetics of the system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We study the effect of finite chain length on the collapse transition of stiff-chain macromolecules by means of a Monte Carlo simulation within the framework of the bond fluctuation lattice model. Variable stiffness of the chains was modeled by introducing a potential depending on the angle between successive bonds and we introduced an additional quasi-Lennard-Jones potential between monomer units which are not nearest neighbors along the chain to model the quality of the solvent. Chains of length up to 200 monomer units were simulated. For the flexible case these chains are long enough to determine the θ-temperature, but for higher stiffnesses we show systematic effects in the dependence of the apparent transition temperature on the stiffness. For fixed chain lengths we determine apparent phase diagrams and give the apparent transition points and points of ideal chain size as a function of stiffness. We report on the occurrence of a toroidal structure in our model and characterize this structure by local and global packing and orientational ordering. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The afterglow of a discharge in helium with a small admixture of hydrogen is studied spectroscopically (p=40 Torr, [e]≤1011 cm−3). The time-resolved measurements of intensities of the first four lines of the Balmer series are performed. The concentrations of metastable helium atoms and molecules are evaluated from the relative intensity of the absorption lines. The ratios of excitation transfer rates from atoms He(2 3 S 1) k 1(n) and molecules of helium He2(a 2sσ 3Σ u + ) k 2(n) to atomic hydrogen H*(n) are measured to be k 1(n=3)/k 2(n=3)=0.04±0.02 and k 1(n=4)/k 2(n=4)=0.01±0.02. The ratios of excitation rate constants k 2(n) corresponding to different states H(n) are measured to be k 1(n=4)/k 2(n=3)=0.023±0.01; k 1(n=5)/k 2(n=3)≤0.013; and k 1(n=6)/k 2(n=3)≤0.007.

Notes: Abstract Results of studying the absorption coefficients and refractive indices of PbTe and GeTe films in the spectral range from 1 to 15 μm are presented. The optical constants of films were found by a technique that combines calculation methods and the presence of strong absorption bands in the spectra. The spectral intervals were determined where the film-forming materials under consideration offer promise in the production of interference coatings for the IR spectral region.

Notes: Abstract This paper contains estimations of the spatial variability of the kinetic energy density in semidiurnal tidal waves of the lowest baroclinic mode in the North Equatorial Countercurrent region. We have noted an essential reduction in the energetic density of semi-diurnal waves at the north boundary of the North Equatorial Countercurrent and a build-up of energy in short-period internal waves. The hydrodynamic instability of baroclinic tidal waves may be regarded as the mechanism responsible for the frequency energy redistribution.

Notes: Abstract A quasi-periodic (wave) spatial-temporal structure of the intrannual variability of the climatic fields of the seawater geostrophic motion within the constant halocline in the Black Sea (75–300m) has been revealed on the basis of generalized archival data on hydrological observations in the main Black Sea current (MBSC) near the Crimea and Caucasus. The variability with annual and semi-annual periods has the character of standing quasi-geostrophic waves at 2- to 4-month periods which become progressive as the direction of their propagation changes during the year. The energy characteristics for the forms of variability revealed are discussed and interpreted from the viewpoint of gradient-eddy waves and the hydrodynamic instability of the MBSC.

Notes: Abstract Transformation of internal tidal waves over the Guinean shelf is studied on the basis of theoretical and field research. This area is characterized by the presence of a narrow high-frequency waveguide. Internal tides propagating over the shelf are similar to shock waves. Short-period oscillations with an amplitude of 15 m develop at the wave's fore front. A shock wave is generated at the phase of a syzygial tide.
