Notes: A recent investigation of powdered Ni-Al systems subject to shock loading has yielded evidence that reactions occur during the shock front. Time-resolved measurements of normal shock pressure indicate that an "excess pressure'' is generated possibly due to an exothermic reaction in the Ni-Al system. These reactions appear to occur during the 100 ns that represent the shock front. A clear reaction threshold is observed and corroborated by micrographs of the recovered samples.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents results from a case record review of the transcrotal approach to undescended testes, hydrocoecle, and hernia in 457 children at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital between 1984 and 1991. Our results show that orchidopexy for the palpable undescended testis and routine inguinal herniotomy in children can be safely performed through a single high scrotal incision. This approach involves much less dissection. Healing is excellent and complications are minimal. The procedure lends itself to the day-case child.

Notes: Abstract We report 13 cases of parotid haemangioma (PH) in infancy treated conservatively. The outcome in each case was complete resolution within the first 6 years of life. With reported recurrence rates following surgical treatment of 25% and injury to the facial nerve in as many as 23%, we recommend that non-operative treatment be adopted in all cases of isolated PH

Notes: Abstract The present communication reports the effect of a softening treatment carried out with 18% NaOH on the fine structure and structure-property relations in coir fibres. The effect of successive removal of lignin and hemicelluloses on the fine structure has also been studied. Unlike other cellulosic fibres, alkali treatment failed to produce any increase in fibre elongation in coir. However, the spiral structure was found to be considerably modified by swelling. X-ray and infrared spectral measurements revealed that a part of the noncellulosic components does occupy the intracellular space and plays a significant role on fine structural changes produced during the alkali treatment.

Notes: Abstract The paper concerns the unbonded contact between a thin circular plate of finite radius, governed by Kirchhof or Reissner theory, pressed by means of rotationally symmetric distributed load and its own weight against the surface of an elastic half-space. The contact is assumed frictionless and unbonded. A Hankel transform solution is used for the half-space and the plate deflection is found by inverting the plate equation. The coefficients in a power expansion are obtained by equating plate and half-space deflections at a number of points in the contact region. The variation of contact radius with plate radius, the radius of the uniformly applied load, and the relative stiffness of plate and foundation, is displayed in a series of figures.

Notes: The Rayleigh-Gans theory of light scattering by a homogeneous cylinder has been applied to the case of scattering by a pad of fibers immersed in a liquid. The theory enables one to locate precisely the matching wavelength at which the mean refractive index of a sample of optically heterogeneous fibers coincides with that of an immersion medium. Thereby it offers a method of determining the mean refractive index. Besides, it facilitates a quantitative estimation of the variability of refractive index. The new technique has been used to study the birefringence of untreated cotton and ramie. The results are presented and discussed.

Notes: Interferometric studies have been made on cotton fibers as well as on twisted nylon filaments. The results so obtained provide strong evidence that the fibrils in the cotton fiber become less inclined to the fiber axis as one proceeds from the surface to the core. Also, studies on twisted nylon filaments by the fiber refractometer and Becke line techniques indicate that the latter, as practiced in this laboratory, does give values of refractive index which are heavily weighted towards the fiber periphery.

Notes: Single- and two-ply yarns of different counts were swollen slack under optimum conditions in aqueous zinc chloride and stretched back to original length. While two-ply yarns showed an improvement in tenacity that was less pronounced in finer counts, single yarns always showed a fall in tenacity. Various properties of the treated yarns like packing fraction, fiber and yarn orientation, cross-sectional morphology, etc. were evaluated to ascertain the likely factors responsible for the differential behavior of the chemically treated single- and two-ply yarns.

Notes: This article discusses the phenomenon of inverse relaxation in some textile fibers, namely cotton, ramie, wool, polyester, and viscose. If anextended viscoelastic specimen is allowed to recover a part of the deformation given to it, such that its tension has not become zero, the stress in it tends to increase. This phenomenon is termed as “inverse relaxation.” This property is measured in terms of an index referred to as the inverse relaxation index. The values of this index at various extension and retraction levels for the above materials are presented and discussed in this article.
