Notes: A high precision atomic polarimeter system for the use in beam-foil spectroscopy experiments with a few keV/amu heavy-ion beams has been developed. The polarimeter measures the circular polarization of fluorescences from the beam ion in-flight after the beam–foil interaction. The present system has two identical such polarimeters in both sides of the beam axis to reduce the systematic errors such due to the fluctuations of beam current, background and so on. A successful use of an ultrathin carbon foil (1.5 μg/cm2), which was durable for several hours against a few hundred nA beam irradiation, enabled the beam–foil experiments with such low energy heavy-ion beams. A performance test of the polarimeter system was carried out in the tilted foil experiments with a 1.7 keV/amu 14N+ beam. The atomic polarization was observed for the transition 1s22s22p3p 1D→1s22s22p3p 1P, whose fluorescence wavelength is 399.5 nm, in the N+ ion (N II). The polarization was approximately −2% for the tilt angle of −40° and showed monotone increasing with increasing tilt angle up to +2% for +40°. The polarization at 0° was (0.002±0.25)%, which is highly consistent with the expected polarization of 0%. This result indicates the high reliability of the present polarimeter system. This is the first tilted-foil experiment at such low beam energy. The present experimental technique will be very useful for studies of the polarization mechanism of the beam–foil interaction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low-resistivity indium–tin–oxide (ITO) films (8.9×10−5–2.3×10−4 Ω cm), 80±20 nm thick grown by combining pulsed laser deposition and laser irradiation of the substrate were studied in relation to tin (Sn) doping content. Films with Sn doping content over the range 0–10 wt % were deposited at room temperature (RT) and 200 °C at a fixed oxygen pressure of 1×10−2 Torr. The laser beam with energy density of 70 mJ/cm2 was directed at the middle portion of the substrate during growth. At RT, the laser-irradiated and nonirradiated parts of the films exhibited crystalline and amorphous phase, respectively. The amorphous films indicated a steady resistivity, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility of ∼2.4×10−4 Ω cm, 8×1020 cm−3, and ∼32 cm2/V s, respectively, and showed no significant change over 0–10 wt % Sn doping content. The crystalline films deposited at RT by laser irradiation and 200 °C indicated a strong dependence of the resistivity, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility on Sn doping content over the range 0–10 wt %. The Hall mobility of the ITO films steadily decreased with increasing Sn doping content. Study on the scattering mechanisms based on the experimental data and theoretical models showed that the scattering of free carriers in the films was caused mainly by ionized centers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dependence of the magnetization on the applied magnetic field direction was investigated at 5 K on superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x prepared by ArF laser ablation with the c axis perpendicular to the film plane. The difference of the magnetic moment between the increasing and decreasing branches of the hysteresis curves at zero field depends on the angle θ between the film normal and the magnetic field as ||cos θ||. This result can be attributed to the magnetic moment perpendicular to the film plane.

Notes: Substrate bias voltages were found to be significantly effective in preparing high-quality laser-deposited superconducting Ba2Y1Cu3O7−δ films at reduced substrate temperatures. The zero-resistance temperature of the biased films, positive bias being more effective than negative, decreased very slightly when the substrate temperature was lowered, whereas that of the unbiased films decreased considerably. In addition, the surface morphology and c-axis orientation have been improved by applying substrate bias voltages. Bias voltages within ±500 V hardly affect the composition of the resulting films so that stoichiometric films have been obtained from a stoichiometric target. A time-resolved optical observation revealed that a short time emission, probably being oxygen plasma, occurred in a few μs after the laser pulse impingement. The improvement in crystallinity of the resulting films is attributed to this emission. The velocity of emissive species in the plume was determined to be 6×105 cm/s. Under positive-biased conditions slower components with a velocity of 3×105 cm/s or less were also observed.

Notes: Direct observation of ions in the laser plume of YBa2Cu3O7−δ was carried out by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The direct observation of the species impinging onto the substrate is very important in order to clarify the kinetics of the film formation, so ion sampling was done through the orifice set at the position of the substrate. Thus the results indicate directly the species of ions incident onto the substrate during laser deposition. The analysis of the ion energies was also carried out. Atomic, monoxide, and cluster ions were observed in the laser plume and their energies were determined to be around 200, several tens and a few eV, respectively.

Notes: The c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) film has been epitaxially grown on Y2O3 (001) substrates by in situ processing for the first time to our knowledge. The in-plane orientation relationship between YBCO and Y2O3 is 〈110〉YBCO(parallel)〈100〉Y2O3. The film exhibits, as deposited, T0C=86.2 K, ΔT=1.2 K; JC=1.4×107 and 2.0×106 A/cm2 in a magnetic field of 0 and 5 T at 5 K, respectively. Moreover, the interface between the YBCO and Y2O3 is very sharp and chemically stable.

Notes: Direct observations of ions in the laser plume of YBa2Cu3O7−δ impinging onto a substrate surface revealed the increase of heavy species in the plume after multiple laser pulses on the YBa2Cu3O7−δ target. The beginning of heavy species emission from the target was observed at around 100 laser beam pulses (1 J/cm2) in our experiments. Particulate formation at the film surface was observed in the film deposited under this condition.

Notes: A case of localized pemphigoid is described in which the lesions were only on the lower legs. Immunoblotting of the patients' serum reacted with a 240-kDa polypeptide identical to one of the bullous pemphigoid antigens. IgG1 was detected in the lesional skin and IgG1 and IgG4 in the patient's serum. These observations suggest that the immunopathological mechanisms in the blister formation in localized pemphigoid are similar to those found in more widespread bullous pemphigoid.

Notes: The effect of electrolyzed water on total microbial count was evaluated on several fresh-cut vegetables. When fresh-cut carrots, bell peppers, spinach, Japanese radish, and potatoes were treated with electrolyzed water (pH 6.8, 20 ppm available chlorine) by dipping, rinsing, or dipping/blowing, microbes on all cuts were reduced by 0.6 to 2.6 logs CFU/g. Rinsing or dipping/blowing were more effective than dipping. Electrolyzed water containing 50 ppm available chlorine had a stronger bactericidal effect than that containing 15 or 30 ppm chlorine for fresh-cut carrots, spinach, or cucumber. Electrolyzed water did not affect tissue pH, surface color, or general appearance of fresh-cut vegetables.
