    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Le potentiel interne moyen de béryllium polycristallin (pureté 99,99%) évaporé dans le vide est mesuré pour la première fois au moyen de l’interféromètre de biprisme à électrons. Etant donné que les couches-supports de Be, C, Al2O3, SiO ou collodion furent détruites au cours de l’évaporation de Be, un nouveau procédé absolument sûr de préparation des surépaisseurs en forme de carré de Be a été mis au point: sur une plaque de verre enduite de B2O3 on fait évaporer une couche-support de même que des surépaisseurs de Be à travers une grille de 50 μm. La pellicule qui dans l’eau se détache de la plaque est reçu par un support pour le microscope électronique. La valeur experimentale du potentiel interne moyen de Be deΦ exp=7,8±0,4 volts correspond à la valeur théorique deΦ théor=7,4 volts d’aprèsY. Siota.
    Abstract: Abstract The mean inner potential in layers of polycrystalline high-purity Beryllium (99.99%) is measured using the electron optical biprism interferometer. Since supporting foils consisting of Be, C, Al2O3, SiO or collodion were destroyed when Be was evaporated onto them, a new reliable method to prepare the step-shaped specimens had to be developed. The following layers were consecutivaly evaporated onto a glass slide: first a layer of B2O3, then a continuous base layer of Be, and at last, through a grid stencil, square steps of Be. The compound foil is separated from the slide by solution of the B2O3 in water, and mounted on an electron microscopical specimen holder. The experimentally determined mean inner potential value of BerylliumΦ exp=7.8±0,4 V is in good agreement withY. Siota’s theoretical valueΦ theor=7.4 V.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Das bisher noch nicht gemessene innere Potential von im Vakuum aufgedampften polykristallinen Reinst-Beryllium (99,99%) wird mittels des elektronenoptischen Biprisma-Interferometers bestimmt. Da Trägerfolien aus Be, C, Al2O3, SiO oder Kollodium durch Aufdampfen von Be zerstört wurden, mußte ein neues meßtechnisch zuverlässiges Präparationsverfahren für die Stufenobjekte entwickelt werden: Auf eine mit B2O3 bedampfte Glasplatte werden eine Grundschicht und durch eine Netzschablone Stufen aus Be aufgedampft. Die in Wasser von der Glasplatte abgelöste Folie wird auf einen elektronenmikroskopischen Objektträger aufgefangen. Das experimentell bestimmte mittlere innere Potential von BerylliumΦ exp=7,8±0,4 Volt steht in guter Übereinstimmung mit dem theoretischen WertΦ theor=7,4 Volt nachY. Siota.

    Notes: Abstract Electron-interferometric measurements of the mean inner potentials are repeated with Al and Cu and for the first time performed with Ge. A new wet preparation method is used to prepare the step shaped specimens for the electron interferometer. This allows a more precise determination of the step height since the conditions under which the vacuum evaporated layers condensate are equal on the glass slide for the optical height measurement and on the specimen carrier. In the new preparation method, a glass slide is, by evaporation under vacuum, first covered with a B2O3 layer, then with a continuous base and finally with steps of the substance to be measured through a grid stencil. After dissolving the B2O3 in water, the compound foil is spread over an electron microscopic specimen carrier. The experimentally determined mean inner potential values for Ge and Cu agree well with those computed bySiota. On the other hand, the value for Al is by 2 volts higher than the computed one.

    Notes: The irreversible binding and toxicity of the DDT metabolites p,p′-DDD and o,p-DDD in the adrenal cortex of female mink Mustela vison were studied. Histological examination of adrenals from mink given a single i.p. injection of p,p′-DDD or o,p′-DDD (125 mg per kg body weight) showed vacuolation, necrosis and focal bleedings in the zonae fasciculata and reticularis. Autoradiograms of solvent-extracted tissue sections of minks given a single i.v. injection of p,p′-[14C]DDD (0.7 mg per kg body weight) revealed a high level of irreversibly bound radio-activity in the adrenal cortex. Microautoradiography showed that the irreversibly bound radio-activity was confined to the zonae fasciculata and reticularis. Incubation of p,p′-[14C]DDD and o,p′-[14C]DDD with mink or otter, Lutra lutra, adrenal homogenate (300 x g supernatant) resulted in an irreversible binding of radioactivity to protein from both species. The irreversible protein binding of the DDD isomers in mink and otter was decreased by addition of the cytochrome P450 inhibitors metyrapone and carbon monoxide, indicating a cytochrome P450 dependent metabolic activation. In contrast, 3-methylsulfonyl-[14C]DDE, a potent adrenocortical toxicant in mice, does not appear to be metabolized to a reactive metabolite in the adrenal cortex of mink or otter. In conclusion, both p,p′-DDD and o,p′-DDD are toxic to the mink adrenal zona fasciculata and reticularis following activation in situ to reactive, tissue-binding metabolites. The results suggest that p,p′-DDD and o,p′-DDD are adrenocortical toxicants also in otter. The involvement of environmental pollutants in the generation of the adrenocortical hyperplasia observed among Baltic seals is discussed.
