Notes: SUMMARY The method of Stumbo (1953, 1965) has been extended to obtain a method to estimate not only sterility but degradation of nutrient and organoleptic factors which degrade exponentially with time of heating at a constant temperature. These factors include, in particular, vitamin and color components of food. In devising the method, a new equation was derived for integrating heat effects throughout the food container during heating and cooling. Though the equation is equally as convenient as Stumbo's original equation, and gives virtually the same results in sterility evaluations. It may be employed with equal ease in evaluation of organoleptic and nutrient factor degradation. To implement the method it was necessary to extend fh/U:g relationship tables for values in the higher range–the new tables cover values (for every other value) from = 8 to = 80. Only three examples of these tables are included in the paper. Results obtained with this simple manual method compare most favorably with results obtained by other more complicated methods for the same purpose, namely those of Ball and Olson (1957), Teixeira et al. (1969) and Hayakawa (1969).

Notes: Abstract Two-level cumulative low-cycle fatigue lives of AISI 316 stainless steel notched specimens with different biaxial loading mode sequences were experimentally analyzed in this paper. Forty-eight cases were conducted in the experimental program by considering the loading level sequence effect, the biaxiality of two levels and the cycle ratios. Results show that interlock effect caused by the characteristic fracture surfaces of the different biaxial states is beneficial to the cumulative fatigue lives. On the other hand, the tensile loading of the second level will accelerate the opening of cracks and decrease fatigue strength. Miner's rule predicts most fatigue lives within 30% error bands, and the loading level sequence effect was not found in this research involving complex fracture modes. Fractography of specimens in the cumulative fatigue tests is reported and discussed in this paper.

Notes: Polycondensation of ethylene dichloride and 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) resulted in high molecular weight soluble polymers or insoluble gels, depending on the ratio of the reactants and the extent of reaction. It is shown that the functionality of a polyfunctional compound containing groups of unequal reactivities can be determined experimentally. The effective functionality of 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) was found to be 2.9 from gelation studies and 3.5 based on the relative reaction rates of the primary and secondary amino groups. By using the effective functionality value, the reaction kinetics can be treated in a simple manner. A typical soluble polymer formed has a low intrinsic viscosity and a very high M̄w/M̄n ratio. Condensations of other alkylene dichlorides and alkylene polyamines demonstrated the validity of Carothers' rule that high polymers will not result if formation of 5- or 6-membered rings is possible.
