    Notes: Abstract. The paper describes the development and current status of salmon, Salmo salar L., ranching in Iceland, with a special emphasis on recapture techniques and homing to the release sites. Many ranching operations are located at release sites with little or no rearing activity except for a short acclimatization period before release. This technique was a breakthrough in Icelandic ranching development, as most suitable ranching sites do not have suitable conditions for smolt rearing.Ranching is mostly practised on the west coast of Iceland, where ranched salmon made up over 80% of the total catch in 1991. The largest ranching stations are Kollafjördur and Vogavík in south-western Iceland and two stations, Lárós and Silfurlax, located on the outer part of Snæfellsnes. Combined releases in 1991 were about 6 million smolts and 130 thousand salmon were harvested from ranching.Ranched salmon are mostly harvested from June to August with a peak run in July. The methods of recapture vary considerably. At Kollafjördur Fish Farm, which has river water for attraction, the salmon are mostly caught in riverine traps of conventional design, but during periods of draught an estuarine seining process has been practised to secure bright salmon. At Vogavík, which only has pumped well water for attraction, catches have been based on efficient estuarine traps. Similar methods have been used at the Silfurlax operation in Hraunsfjördur.Homing to ranching sites has been shown to be fairly precise, especially if smolts are released in fresh water and suitable ranching stocks are used. There are indications that the Kollafjördur ranching strain, which has been developed over a period of 25 years, has better homing than wild stocks. Considerable straying has been observed, primarily between ranching stations and into the outflows of large land-based salmon farms. Straying into salmon streams seems to vary from year to year and is greatest in the vicinity of large ranching stations. It seems to occur in late summer, possibly as a result of inadequate recapture techniques at the ranching sites.

    Notes: The potential for differentiation of the human basophilic leukaemia cell line KUS12 was examined by means of a panel of physiologic and non-physiologic substances used as inducers. The phenotypic characteristics of non-induced KU812 cells included an immature morphology with scanty cytoplasmic granulation, expression of a low amount of high affinity, but no low affinity receptors (CD 23) for IgE, and a capacity for low-rate histamine synthesis. The differentiation process was characterized by a rapid (24 h) increase in histamine production, a slower morphological maturation with the development of Alcian blue stainable granula demonstrable after 72 h. Concomitant with the phenotypic alterations, cell growth was inhibited. Differentiation in KU812 cells was inducible by Ara-C and to some extent by sodium butyrate, but not by dimethyl sulphoxide, retinoic acid, or gamma-interferon. Conditioned medium (CM) from cultured peripheral blood cells from atopic individuals and 18 out of 22 analysed glioma cell lines induced differentiation of the KUS12 cells, whereas supernatant from only 1 out of 21 other cell lines, including carcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, leukaemia, and normal fibroblasts had this activity. CM from the T-leukaemic cell line. Mo, also induced KU812 differentiation. A primary fractionation of the active substance from this cell line by reversed phase chromatography eluted the active substance at a concentration of 42–44% acetonitrile. Our present study has shown that the KU812 may serve as an appropriate model to study differentiation of basophils. In addition, its fast and specific response to biological factors makes it suitable as a biological assay for determination of active factor produced by atopic individuals.

    Notes: Abstract. Sixty-four consecutive patients with disseminated midgut carcinoids were treated during an 8-year period according to a single clinical protocol aimed at aggressive tumor reduction by surgery alone or with subsequent hepatic artery embolization. All patients had markedly elevated urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels (581 ± 79 μmol/24 h) and hormonal symptoms. Fourteen patients (22%) reached anatomic and biochemical cure by surgery alone. At follow-up, the mean 5-HIAA levels were still normal after 69.0 ± 6.2 months; two patients had died from unrelated causes. With the introduction of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy, subclinical disease was diagnosed in 7 of these 14 patients. Forty patients with bilobar hepatic disease underwent embolization in combination with octreotide. In this group, 5-HIAA levels were still reduced by 55% after 71 ± 11 months of follow-up, and the 5-year survival was 56%, estimated from the total death hazard function. After embolization, two subgroups could be identified with marked differences in their long-term response to treatment. Ten patients were not embolized owing to complicating diseases. The 5-year survival for the entire series was 58%. A significantly increased risk of cardiovascular deaths was seen, which underlines the importance of total survival analysis in a disease with multiple hormonal effects. It is concluded that an active surgical approach must be recommended to patients with the midgut carcinoid syndrome. In patients with bilobar hepatic disease, embolization combined with octreotide treatment markedly reduced the 5-HIAA excretion and suggested a prolonged 5-year survival.

    Notes: Abstract We use artificial compressibility together with Richardson extrapolation in the Mach numberM as a method for solving the time dependent Navier-Stokes equation for very low Mach number flow and for incompressible flow. The question of what boundary conditions one should use for low Mach number flow, especially at inflow and outflow boundaries, is investigated theoretically, and boundary layer suppressing boundary conditions are derived. For the case of linearization around a constant flow we show that the low Mach number solution will converge with the rateO(M2) to the true incompressible solution, provided that we choose the boundary conditions correctly. The results of numerical calculations for the time dependent, nonlinear equations and for flow situations with time dependent inflow velocity profiles are presented. The convergence rateM 2 to incompressible solution is numerically confirmed. It is also shown that using Richardson extrapolation toM 2= 0 in order to derive a solution with very small divergence can with good result be carried through withM 2 as large as 0.1 and 0.05. As the time step in numerical methods must be chosen approximately such thatΔt · (i/(M Δx)−v/Δx 2) is in the stability region of the time stepping method, and asM 2=0.05 is sufficiently small to yield good results, the restriction on the time step due to the Mach number is not serious. Therefore the equations can be integrated very fast by explicit time stepping methods. This method for solving very low Mach number flow and incompressible flow is well suited to parallel processing.
