Notes: The MgO-doped ZrO2–TiO2 ceramic pellets were studied for its humidity-sensitive electrical conduction. An equivalent circuit model has been proposed to define the humidity-sensitive electrical properties. This model is in agreement with the experimental findings. The electrical conduction is largely controlled by the intergranular impedance except at very high humidities. The impedance of the pellets showed inductive behavior in high-humidity region. This behavior can be attributed to the spherical paths adopted by charge carrier because conduction is mainly through the spherical grain surface. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : Of the 432 genital ulcer cases seen in 1985, 36 had donovanosis, thus forming an incidence of 8.33%. In contrast, 42 (6.38%) cases of donovanosis were diagnosed among a total of 658 cases of genital ulcers in 1983. The majority of patients in both epidemics were young unmarried men who contracted the disease through extramarital sexual intercourse. Perianal lesions were seen primarily in those who had a history of sodomy. The disease chiefly affected illiterate persons of low socioeconomic strata. The incubation period varied from 1 to 90 days. Twenty (62.50%) patients in the 1985 epidemic had an incubation period of less than 7 days, in contrast to only 9 (34.61%) in the 1983 epidemic. The epidemics occurred from autumn to the start of winter. Duration of the disease varied from 1 day to 6 years. The clinical features and sites of afflication were usual; however, pseudo-bubo and pseudoelephantiasis0 were conspicuous in a significant minority.

Notes: The shelf-life of flavored butter oils was enhanced by adding permitted antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at 0.02% level. Such samples competed well with conveitional ghee. Tertbuthydroquinone (TBHQ) (permitted antioxidant for vegetable fats) showed the greatest antioxidant potency and could be recommended even at a very low level (0.005%) for imparting a longer shelf-life to flavored butter oils.

Notes: The keeping quality of synthetically flavored butter oil (FBOS) in comparison to butter oil (BO) and ghee (heat clarified butterfat packaged in tin and polyethylene packages was evaluated organoleptically and by chemical tests viz. free fatty acids (FFA) level, peroxide value (PV), total carbonyl content (TCC) and moisture content (MC). FBOS and BO had lower average flavor score (FS), FFA level and MC and higher average PV and TCC than those in ghee. FBOS had higher average FS and PV than those in BO, variations in other parameters being nonsignificant. the keeping quality of FBOS was intermediate between that of ghee and BO.Fats in tin containers had significantly higher average FFA level, MC and lower PV than fats in polyethylene containers. the variations in average TCC and FS in fats in tin containers and polyethylene containers were nonsignificant. A firm generalized inference could not be drawn about the use of containers for the storage of various fat samples. As the oxidative changes compared to hydrolytic changes are of greater significance in the deterioration of FBOS and BO, tin packages should be preferred to polyethylene packages for the storage of FBOS and BO.

Notes: 2.5 cm long stem segments of Populus nigra L. did not root when cultured in water or in auxins alone but rooted in glucose. The number of rooted segments and roots produced on them increased with rising glucose concentrations up to 0.5%, but decreased with higher concentrations. An addition of 1.0 mg/1 IAA inhibited rooting at 0.01 % glucose, was ineffective at 0.1 % and stimulative at higher concentrations of glucose which were inhibitory when used alone. The results show that the auxin effects on rooting are influenced by the nutritional status of the stem cutting of a species, and that a proper balance of the two is necessary for root development.

Notes: Rooting on 2.5 cm long stem segments of Salix tetrasperma was optimal when cultured in 5.0 mg/I IAA in combination with 1.0 % glucose at 30°C, and in combination with 0.1 % glucose at 15°C. 5-Fluorodeoxyuridine (FUDR), actinomycin-D and cycloheximide all inhibited rooting and the inhibitory effect in each case increased with concentration. 5-Fluorouracil (FU), on the other hand, was ineffective. The results show that auxins probably act as a triggering agent for the synthesis of specific enzyme proteins that are required for the initiation of root primordia at the transcriptional level and that a correct balance of auxin and nutrition which may vary with the environmental conditions, is necessary for optimal rooting.

Notes: Summary Apparent values ofK m and V max have been measured for catalysis of hydrolysis of unsonicated egg lecithin liposomes, activated through addition of 0.04m n-hexanol, by phospholipases A2 from bee and snake venoms and by phospholipase C fromClostridium welchii as a function of the concentration of three surfactants: hexadecylamine, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and dihexadecyl phosphate. For all three enzymes, values ofK m andV max show little or no dependence on the concentration of these ionic surfactants, demonstrating that the liposomal surface charge is not a crucial factor in determining susceptibility to phospholipase-catalyzed hydrolysis.

Notes: Summary The cortical tissue of rat brain was fractionated through zonal centrifugation in a continuous sucrose density gradient, yielding a variety of morphologically distinct membrane fragments derived from nerve-end particles possessing variable levels of activity of Na, K-dependent Mg-sensitive ATPase (Na, K-ATPase) and other enzymes. Upon addition of certain of the zonal fractions, particularly those rich in the ATPase and acetylcholinesterase activities, to one side of planar artificial membranes, formed from mixtures of oxidized cholesterol and alkanes and bathed in a solution containing sodium, potassium, and magnesium ions, direct current membrane resistance fell from one to three orders of magnitude. Subsequent addition of ATP to the same side of the membrane to which the ATPase was added (thecis side) led to the development of net short-circuit current flow and open-circuit potential across the membrane (thecis side being negative with respect to thetrans side). Development of the short-circuit current and open-circuit potential is dependent upon the presence of all the substrates of Na, K-ATPase as well as that of the enzyme itself. The net current flow is inhibited and the open-circuit potential discharged by the addition of ouabain to thetrans side of the membrane, of phospholipase A to thecis side, or of trypsin to either side of the membrane. These observations provide circumstantial evidence for the reconstitution of the active cation pump across the artificial bilayer. Efforts to effect a similar reconstitution across membranes of this and other compositions employing Na, K-ATPase preparations from beef heart, beef brain, cat brain, human red cells, rabbit kidney, and rat brain microsomes failed.
