    Notes: Acidification, addition of dimethyl dicarbonate and a mixture of potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate and storage temperature were related to microbiological stability and quality of tomato juice. Whether iuices were acidified CDH 4.0 to 3.7) or nonacidified. dimethyl dicarbonate and sorbate/benzoate were highly effective in diminishcng mold and yeast count at 5°C and 20°C. Dimethyl dicarbonate in juices acidified to pH 3.7 and stored at 5°C was most effective in controlling plate counts, followed by sorbate/benzoate in juices acidified to pH 3.7 and stored at 5°C and 20°C. Tomato juice treated with dimethyl dicarbonate had lower amounts of ascorbic acid, total amino acids, fructose, glucose, lycopene and β-carotene.

    Notes: Snap beans packed in low density polyolefin film and stored at 5°C and 10°C were removed at days 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 for quality evaluation. Chlorophyll content of beans stored at 5°C was not influenced by storage period. Pods stored at 10°C showed significant increase in chlorophyll after 4 days storage followed by a decline as time of storage increased. Hue angle and tristimulus a* corresponded more closely to chlorophyll content and were better indicators of snap bean color than chroma and tristimulus L* and b*. Weight loss, seed percentage and ascorbic acid were higher in pods stored at 10°C than in those stored at 5°C. Storage temperature and period had no influence on texture or soluble solids content.

    Notes: Abstract The recently published Iraqi earthquake data file over the period 1905–1984 is used to derive a local I o -M s formula. This is then combined with a local intensity attenuation relationship to compile the observed I o (MM) zoning map for Iraq. Earthquake risk is calculated using the log N (M s )relation for selected design magnitudes and periods and is mapped as the (%) probability of occurrence using a 0.5 deg latitude/longitude grid system. It is observed that the intensity zones and contour distributions are highly influenced by the presence of large magnitude shocks while risk maps reveal the Tauros seismogenic zone as having a greater risk of occurrence than the Zagros zone. The compiled zoning maps are intended for the use of local practising engineers for earthquake-resistant design procedures that are currently being adopted in the country.

    Notes: Abstract In an earlier paper we considered a power-series expansion of the metric for a rotating field in terms of a parameter and constructed a solution of Einstein's equations to the first few orders in terms of two harmonic functions. We encountered a pair of Poisson-type equations which were apparently insoluble explicitly. The form of the metric considered was the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou form. In this paper we consider a power-series expansion of the most general form of a rotating metric and show that one encounters the same two Poisson equations as before. If these equations are insoluble explicitly, as seems likely, then a general solution depending on two harmonic functions cannot exist in closed form.

    Notes: Abstract We look in detail at those effects which slow down black holes of mass ∼1015 g and affect their spatial distribution today. In particular we treat effects caused by the charge fluctuations of the hole which result from quantum-mechanical processes. The dominant energyloss mechanism for the holes is the expansion of the universe, which leaves them virtually at rest at the time of galaxy formation. The resultant violent relaxation should concentrate roughly half of them in present-day galaxies and their halos.

    Notes: Abstract A class of approximate stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations are obtained by expanding the metric in powers of a certain parameter and solving explicitly the first few orders in terms of four harmonic functions. These solutions, to the order considered, reduce to the Weyl, Bonnor, and Perjés-Israel-Wilson solutions, respectively, for suitable choice of the harmonic functions. They also contain a subclass that is asymptomatically flat and has realistic arbitrary spinning sources.

    Notes: Pluripotent hemopoietic progenitors lose potentialities during the process of differentiation. We have examined events that lead to lineage restriction by determining the cellular composition of 785 multilineage colonies grown from peripheral blood samples of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) heterozygous volunteers. Of these colonies, 762 contained only one isoenzyme type and were considered to be of clonal origin. A considerable heterogenity was observed. Some colonies were composed of cells belonging to two different lineages, while other colonies contained three or more different cell types. A small number of colonies consisted - in addition to myeloid cells - of T-lymphocytes. The variable association within individual colonies of members belonging to different hemopoietic lineages suggests a flexible determination and expression of differentiation programs by early progenitors.
