    Notes: Production and growth of a local strain of marine Chlorella sp. was investigated under different pH levels ranging from pH 6.0–8.5 using 200 L capacity algal tubes. The results show that a pH of 6.5 will be most conducive for producing this species in a continuous culture system. The highest production was 136 g/m3/d with a mean of 117 ± 11 g/m3/d at pH 6.5 compared with other pH levels tested. The total fatty acid content was elevated at low pH levels and ω 3 PUFA increased as the pH was lowered from 8.5 to 6.5. The investigations show that algal productivity is considerably higher in the continuous culture system than in any of the other culture systems available.

    Notes: The rotifer Brachionus glicatilis, strain-S (from Japan) and strain-S1 (Pozuelo 1975) were mass cultured using Chlorella and bakers' yeast. Under the same feed regime, a significant increase (P 〈 0.001) in rotifer strain-S production (44.19 ± 8.50 individuals/mL/d) was observed compared with strain-S1 (29.64 ± 9.38 individuals/mL/d). The population growth rate was significantly higher (P〉 0.001), and doubling time was significantly lower (P〉 0.0001) in rotifer strain-S than in strain-S1. There was a significant decline (P〉 0.001) in birth rate of strain-S rotifers in the culture system compared with strain-S1, suggesting short longevity and deterioration of the culture system while using strain-S. In general, no significant difference (P〈 0.05) in the presence of ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 PUFA) in different strains of rotifers was observed.

    Notes: Abstract Use of marine yeast and bakers' yeast in combination with Chlorella sp. for the large-scale production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was investigated. The culture density of marine yeast fed rotifers was significantly higher than rotifers fed bakers' yeast. Rotifer production was significantly higher and the doubling time was lower for marine yeast fed rotifers than for bakers' yeast fed rotifers. It appears that the addition of marine yeast to the feed enhances the birth rate and overall production of rotifers in the culture system. The nutritional quality of rotifers is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Continuous production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis rotundiformis (S-type) in an intensive chemostat culture system has been investigated. The production dynamics of rotifers in relation to different flow rates and feed regimes show that the growth rate and production depends on the type of algal feed and flow rate utilized in the culture system. It was possible to achieve a mean production of up to 318.84 × 106 rotifers m−3 d−1 at a flow rate of 6 1 h−1 in 100 1 chemostats and up to 261.21 × 106 rotifers m−3 d−1 at a flow rate of 40 1 h −1 while using 1 m3 capacity rotifer chemostats as production units. The ω 3 fatty acid composition of rotifers while using Chlorella and Nannochloropsis in the culture system has been described. The results of this investigation show that the rotifer productivity in the continuous culture system is considerably higher than in any of the conventional culture systems described to date for aquacultural purposes.
