Notes: This paper presents the analytical investigations pertaining to the elastic buckling behavior of orthotropic composite plates. By the pultrusion process the structural shapes composed of orthotropic plate components are readily available in the construction market. When the member is utilized for the flexure, lateral-torsional buckling and local buckling behaviors must be taken into consideration. In the local buckling analysis, flange and web local buckling analyses must be conducted in the design of such a member. For finding the web buckling strength, the bucklingequation for the orthotropic plate under linearly distributed in-plane forces is derived by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The boundary conditions of plate are assumed that the loaded edges are simply supported and the unloaded edges are simply supported or fixedly supported. The buckling coefficient of a plate having different orthogonal mechanical properties is found by using the numerical technique and the minimum buckling coefficient is suggested. In addition, simplified form of equation for predicting the minimum buckling coefficient for the plate is proposed. Brief discussion on the design criteria relating to the web local buckling is also provided

Notes: In the construction of composite bridge structures, various types of shear connectors areusually used to provide an efficient load transfer and the composite action of two or more differentmaterials. In the previous work conducted by authors, a new type of the shear connector wasintroduced, which is the perforated shear connector with flange heads (T-shaped perforated shearconnector), and the structural behavior of the shear connector was discussed based on the results ofpush-out tests. For the practical design of new shear connector, it is necessary to develop theequation for the prediction of the load carrying capacity of the shear connector. In this study, theexisting design equations for the Perfobond shear connector were briefly analyzed and the equationfor the prediction of the shear capacity of T-shaped perforated shear connector was suggestedempirically. By comparing the results obtained by the suggested equation, the existing equations forthe Perfobond shear connector, and the experiment, the applicability and effectiveness of thesuggested equation was estimated

Notes: The structural shapes or plates with varying thickness are often adopted in aerospace industries such as a skin structure of an airplane and civil engineering fields where the load effects are varied along the longitudinal axis of the member. Specially, the structural steel tapered plate, so called LP (longitudinally profiled) plate, has been used in many countries as a part of main member of bridges, buildings, etc. This paper presents the result of an analytical study pertaining to the local buckling behavior of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) flexural member. The flexural member is consisted with uniform thickness web and flange tapered in thickness. The boundary conditions of flange plate in its unloaded edges are elastically restrained, but they are assumed to be either fixed-free or simple-free for simplicity. In the analysis, the Galerkin form of Rayleigh-Ritz method is adopted. The buckling equation of isolated unstiffened tapered plate elements having fixed-free orsimple-free boundary condition in its unloaded edges is derived. The plate buckling coefficients with respect to the thickness ratios and plate aspect ratios are calculated and presented in a graphical form. Unlike the buckling of plate with uniform thickness, discontinuous changes of buckling mode are not exist. In addition, the critical slenderness ratio of such an unstiffened tapered plate element issuggested to prevent buckling

Notes: FRP composite materials are widely applicable in the construction industries as aload-bearing structural element or a reinforcing and/or repairing materials for the concrete. In this paper, we presented the flexural behavior of steel reinforced concrete beams reinforced with FRP re-bars manufactured by different fibers but the same vinylester resin. Experimental investigation pertaining to the load-deflection and load-strain characteristics of steel reinforced concrete beamsreinforced with FRP re-bars with garnet coated surface is presented and the theoretical prediction is also conducted. In the investigation, the effects of FRP re-bar reinforcement in addition to the steel reinforcement are estimated. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions. Good agreements are observed
