Notes: Abstract The effect of annealing on the electrical properties and the refractive index of red mercuric iodide (HgI2) single crystals is investigated. The ac-impedance and phase angle were measured in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 10 kHz at different annealing temperatures. The ac-conductivity, dielectric constants, loss tangent and the refractive index as a function of frequency are determined. The results are discussed in terms of structural changes taking place as a result of the heat treatment of the HgI2 single crystals.

Notes: Abstract The effect of filament diameter on the failure stress of polyethylene fibres has been studied using Weibull analysis. Both gel-spun and melt-spun fibres have been examined, so that differences might be observed for changes in draw ratio or modulus as well as molecular weight. It is concluded that the strength of high-modulus melt-spun fibres relates to the concentration of flaws and is significantly dependent on filament diameter. Conflicting results for gel-spun fibres are discussed in the light of the present investigation, and it is concluded that the mechanism of failure in these fibres is different from that of the melt-spun fibres.

Notes: This paper reports results on the electrical properties of laminated epoxy composite containing 25 layers of carbon fibers in the form of mats. The dependence of the activation energy (calculated from DC resistivity measurements) on temperature reveals two independent conduction processes. The AC impedance is independent of the applied frequency below 75°C, and the real componet of the dielectric constant is also independent of temperature at high frequencies. The determined shielding effectiveness is dominated by the insertion loss. The observed optimum shielding effectiveness occurs at 30 mm spacing and applied frequency 9 GHz.

Notes: β-Relaxation in die-drawn isotactic polypropylene (i-pp) is associated with a glass transition temperature and depends on the mobility of the molecules in the amorphous regions. A simplified two phase model was employed to explain the decrease in the intensity of the β-process peak upon drawing. The model predicts that the decrease in the loss factor (tan δ) upon drawing is associated with a change in continuity from a series to a parallel situation.
