Notizen: Companies that use cost-based pricing sometimes manufacture products that involve joint cost allocation. A problem with this is that, while product prices are a function of the full cost, joint cost allocation methods using net realizable values depend on the product prices. This paper demonstrates that when all costs and production quantities are known or can be budgeted, it is possible to simultaneously determine unique product prices (having non-uniform markup rates) and cost allocations using the net realizable value method.

Notizen: Abstract Leontief substitution systems have been studied by economists and operations researchers for many years. We show how such linear systems are naturally viewed asLeontief substitution flow problems on directed hypergraphs, and that important solution properties follow from structural characteristics of the hypergraphs. We give a strongly polynomial, non-simplex algorithm for Leontief substitution flow problems that satisfy againfree property leading to acyclic extreme solutions. Integrality conditions follow easily from this algorithm. Another structural property, support disjoint reachability, leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for extreme solutions to be binary. In a survey of applications, we show how the Leontief flow paradigm links polyhedral combinatorics, expert systems, mixed integer model formulation, and some problems in graph optimization.

Notizen: Abstract The multi-level linear programs of Candler, Norton and Townsley are a simple class of sequenced-move games, in which players are restricted in their moves only by common linear constraints, and each seeks to optimize a fixed linear criterion function in his/her own continuous variables and those of other players. All data of the game and earlier moves are known to a player when he/she is to move. The one-player case is just linear programming. We show that questions concerning only the value of these games exhibit complexity which goes up all levels of the polynomial hierarchy and appears to increase with the number of players. For three players, the games allow reduction of theΣ 2 andΠ 2 levels of the hierarchy. These levels essentially include computations done with branch-and-bound, in which one is given an oracle which can instantaneously solve NP-complete problems (e.g., integer linear programs). More generally, games with (p + 1) players allow reductions ofΣ p andΠ p in the hierarchy. An easy corollary of these results is that value questions for two-player (bi-level) games of this type is NP-hard.

Notizen: Abstract We study the formation of mixed-integer programming (MIP) constraints through the development of constructions which syntactically parallel the set operations of union, intersection, Cartesian product, and linear affine transformation. In this manner, we are able to both modularize the work of constructing representations (as the representations for base sets of a composite construction need not be disjunctively derived) and to make connections to certain of the logic-based approaches to artificial intelligence which utilize the intersection (“and”) and union (“or”) operations. We provide results which allow one to “calculate” the linear relaxation of a composite construction, in terms of set operations on the relaxation of the base sets. We are also able to compare the size of the relaxations for different formulations of the same MIP set, when these different formulations arise from one another through distributive laws. Utilizing these results, we generalize the Davis-Putnam algorithm of propositional logic to an MIP form, and answer a question regarding the relative efficiency of two versions of this algorithm. In this context, the subroutines of the logic algorithm correspond to list processing subroutines for MIP to be used prior to running linear programs. They are similar in nature to preprocessing routines, wherein entire MIP constraint sets are manipulated as formal symbols of logic.

Notizen: Abstract We provide a characterization of minimal inequalities for bounded mixed integer programs, in terms of subadditive functions. The condition on the columns of the integer-constrained variables is analogous to that obtained earlier for the group problem, and we also determine the condition on the columns of the continuous variables.

Notizen: Abstract We describe an algorithm for the satisfiability problem of prepositional logic, which is significantly more efficient for this problem than is a general mixed-integer programming code. Our algorithm is a list processor using a tree-search method, and is based on Loveland's form of the algorithm of Davis and Putnam.
