    Notes: We describe in detail a method by which to establish the magnetic anisotropy of thin ferromagnetic films on strongly paramagnetic substrates that are slightly anisotropic. The film that we consider is composed of the much studied manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the substrate is NdGaO3, a good lattice match. Below a Curie temperature Tc of 260 K it was found, using a vibrating sample magnetometer, that 72±3 nm La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 films grown epitaxially by pulsed laser deposition on untwinned orthorhombic NdGaO3 (001) substrates exhibit uniaxial anisotropy with K=(3.6±0.1)×105 erg cm−3. The easy direction is along [110] of the pseudocubic unit cell, i.e., diagonal to the O–Mn–O bond directions and parallel to the side of the actual unit cell which is orthorhombic. We attribute an 11±4% loss of the low temperature moment to the proximity of the paramagnetic substrate rather than to stress. It is argued that stress is minimal such that the observed anisotropy must be magnetocrystalline. Both the reduction in moment and the anisotropy must be taken into account when designing thin film experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The growth factor, transforming growth factor-β1, which under normal circumstances promotes wound healing by stimulating local fibroblasts to produce collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins, has also been implicated as the primary causative agent of fibrosis. Because transforming growth factor-β1 is capable of stimulating its own production by fibroblasts, its normally beneficial effects may become amplified to the point where excess extracellular matrix accumulation occurs, thereby causing abnormal scarring. Therefore, strategies that block or counter the effects of transforming growth factor-β1 may be useful in preventing or decreasing fibrosis. One such strategy is the use of glucocorticoid steroids such as dexamethasone, which normally have the opposite effect of transforming growth factor-β1, namely the impairment of wound healing. When used in conjunction with transforming growth factor-β1, glucocorticoid steroids may normalize the effect of transforming growth factor-β1 on collagen synthesis, thereby reducing excessive collagen deposition and fibrosis.

    Notes: Abstract: Several clinicopathologic variables influence prognosis in breast cancer, including stage, histologic grade, nodal status, and tumor size. Multiple studies have shown an independent value of proliferation index as a prognostic variable for the stratification into favorable and unfavorable groups. The monoclonal antibody MIB-1 reacts with the same antigen site, not epitope, as recognized by the Ki-67 antibody. Like Ki-67, MIB-1 reacts with cells in the late G1, S, M and G2 phases of the cell cycle, but MIB-1 has the advantage of reacting with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material. The authors investigated the feasibility of using image analysis to quantitate the MIB-1 antibody staining (proliferation index [PI]) and predict survival in a series of 230 patients with stage I and stage II breast cancer. In a univariate Cox regression model, larger values of MIB-1 were related to shorter survival times (p 〈 0.001). Exploratory statistical procedures were used to categorize the patients into good, intermediate, and poor survival groups using the following proliferation indices as cut-points: 〈5%, 5–11%, and 〉11 %, respectively. Higher clinical stage was associated with higher MIB-1 values and shorter survival (p = 0.01, and p = 0.003, respectively). Tumor size (p = 0.02) and nodal status (p = 0.05) were also associated with higher values of MIB-1. After adjusting for age, clinical stage, nodal status, and tumor size in a multivariate analysis, MIB-1 retained its prognostic significance (p 〈 0.0001) when considered as either a continuous or categorical variable. There were no significant associations between MIB-1 determined proliferation index and age (p = 0.54), histologic grade (p = 0.69), nuclear grade (p = 0.06) or the presence of vascular invasion (p =.66). There is a strong statistical relationship between cell proliferative activity, as determined by MIB-1 expression, and survival in early stage breast cancer.

    Notes: In situ angle resolved x-ray photoemission spectroscopy has been performed on superconducting a,b-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−δ epitaxial films. The relative intensities of the Cu 2p Ba 3d, and Y 3d core emissions have shown the diffraction-like dependence on the electron escape angle due to the spatial distribution of elements in the surface layer. The calculated results by the single scattering cluster model on the surface with the Cu-O outermost layer show a better agreement with the experiment than the (Y, Ba)-O in the outermost layer.

    Notes: Creativity is essential to successful new product development efforts. Teams constitute the organizing principle in most modern innovation activities. Although creativity research has revealed many factors influencing individual creativity, little is known about how team-level creativity is determined. Since the creative innovation task requires teams to combine and integrate input from multiple team members, the team's communication pattern is an important determinant of team creativity. Based on a sample of 44 NPD teams in eleven companies, this study examines the effects of team-member communication on team creativity. It is found that both interaction frequency and subgroup-formation of communication have a negative relationship to team creativity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and further research is indicated.

    Notes: Serotonin (5HT) and the cholinergic analogue carbachol (CCh) act on neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area through pre- and post-synaptic receptors. Previously, it was shown that post-synaptic actions of 5HT and CCh are affected by corticosteroids: predominant activation of high affinity mineralocorticoid receptors resulted in small hyperpolarizing responses to 5HT and small depolarizing responses to CCh; additional activation of low affinity glucocorticoid receptors led to increased 5HT and CCh responses. In the present study, we examined the consequences of steroid modulation of these post-synaptic membrane effects and/or possible pre-synaptic effects by 5HT and CCh for the excitability in the CA1 area, using extracellular field potential or intracellular recordings from individual pyramidal neurons. Steroid treatment by itself did not affect the amplitude or paired pulse properties of synaptic responses. In slices from adrenally intact rats, both 5HT (3–30 μM) and CCh (1–10 μM) induced a dose-dependent suppression of the synaptic field responses evoked in the CA1 area by stimulation of the Schaffer collaterals. No changes in these transmitter effects were observed after adrenalectomy. The 5HT induced suppression of the population spike amplitude was, however, reduced after selective occupation of mineralocorticoid receptors. Intracellularly, no significant steroid dependent modulation of (pre-synaptic) 5HT evoked changes in synaptic responses was observed. These data suggest that the steroids modulate post-synaptic but not pre-synaptic 5HT effects and that this modulation is reflected in the excitability of the CA1 region. The CCh induced suppression of the population spike was not affected by corticosteroid receptor activation, indicating that the previously found steroid modulation of post-synaptic CCh effects has no clear consequences for the CA1 excitability.

    Notes: The a-amylase activity of ten human saliva samples was measured using phadebas, iodine and gel-diffusion procedures. Highly significant correlations (p = 0.001) were found between the results of the three methods, namely phadebas and iodine r = –0.907, phadebas and gel diffusion r = +0.928, and iodine and gel diffusion r = –0.948. The suitability of the three methods for use in an educational context is discussed.
