    Notes: Emission on the I2 (D′→A′), XeI (B2Σ1/2+→X2Σ1/2+) and XeO (2 3Π→1 3Π) bands, peaking in the ultraviolet at 342, 253 and 238 nm, respectively, has been generated on a continuous basis in a microdischarge with a static gas fill. Discharges are produced in Kr/I2, Xe/I2, or Xe/O2 gas mixtures by cylindrical devices 400 μm in diameter and fabricated in silicon. Rare-gas–halide and –oxide microdischarge lamps are attractive ultraviolet or vacuum ultraviolet sources and XeI, in particular, appears to be a potential replacement for Hg resonance line radiation (253.7 nm). © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Two color, pump–probe laser experiments on the ∼100 fs time scale have been applied to examining the dynamics of vibrational wave packets in the C 1Πu state of Cs2. Wave packets consisting of more than 20 C state vibrational levels are produced with an initial pulse having a central wavelength between ∼620 and 680 nm. The temporal history of the wave packet is inferred from the time and energy-integrated photoelectron signal produced when the excited state is photoionized by a time-delayed pulse centered at 605, 610, 615, 617, or 620 nm. Because of the difference in equilibrium internuclear separations for the Cs2(C) and Cs+2(X) states (ΔRe≈0.75 A(ring)), wave packets are readily observed (signal-to-noise ratio (approximately-greater-than)10) without the need to resort to mass selection techniques. Frequency analysis of the wave packet data shows a dominant (fundamental) component that decreases from 29 to ∼28.3 cm−1 as the pump wavelength is tuned from 627 to 641 nm. Other spectral modes at ∼23.5 and ∼34 cm−1 and a weaker term at twice the fundamental frequency are also observed and quantum mechanical calculations of the wavepacket motion are in accord with the experimental results. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vibrational wave packets in the B 1Πu and D 1Σu+ excited states of Cs2 have been studied on the ∼100 fs time scale by pump–probe laser spectroscopy. The temporal behavior of the wave packets was monitored by photoionizing the electronically excited molecule with a time-delayed probe pulse and recording the time and energy-integrated photoelectron signal as a function of time delay between the pump and probe pulses. For the B 1Σu+ experiments, wave packets were produced by exciting the B 1Σu+←X 1Σg+ transition in the ∼740–790 nm region and subsequently detected by photoionizing the molecule at wavelengths between 565 nm and 600 nm. By simulating the experimentally observed transients with the density matrix formalism (and explicitly accounting for laser chirp and |Δv|〉1 coherences), improved values for the equilibrium internuclear separation for the Cs2(B 1Πu) state and Te for the Cs2+(X) state were determined to be Re(B 1Πu)=4.93±0.03 Å and Te[Cs2+(X)]=29 930±100 cm−1, respectively. Similar experiments were conducted for the D 1Σu+ state. Wave packets composed of vibrational levels (v′(approximate)40–50) perturbed by the bound 2 3Πou state were produced on the D 1Σu+ potential surface by driving the D 1Σu+←X 1Σg+ transition in the 575–610 nm spectral interval. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Cells of Chlorella fusca var. vacuolata (Cambridge 211/8p) resisted efforts aimed at producing naked protoplasts by enzymatic degradation of the cell wall, and a study of the development and composition of the wall was therefore undertaken. 1. After cytokinesis has produced naked autospores within the mother cell wall, cell wall formation commences outside the autospore plasma membrane with the appearance of small trilaminar plaques. These enlarge while inter-autospore granular material diminishes in quantity, and they eventually fuse to produce a complete trilaminar sheath around each autospore. 2. A microfibrillar, cellulase digestible, layer is deposited between the trilaminar component and the plasma membrane. Meanwhile the corresponding microfibrillar component of the mother cell wall is digested leaving only its resistant trilaminar component. 3. The trilaminar component includes a substance considered to be the polymerized carotenoid, sporopollenin, on the basis of its resistance to extreme extraction procedures including acetolysis, and its infra red absorption spectrum. 4. Two phases of sporopollenin biosynthesis were detected by means of pulse and pulse-chase treatments with 14C-acetate at intervals during the cell cycle in synchronous cultures. One coincides with the formation of the sporopollenin-containing trilaminar wall component, and the other is 6–8 hours earlier while the cells are in karyokinesis. The former yields labelled sporopollenin directly and the latter probably represents formation of a precursor. 5. Of five other strains of Chlorella tested, only one possesses sporopollenin, and so does one Scenedesmus and two out of three strains of Prototheca. 6. Examination of the wall structure of the above algae suggest a relationship between the presence of sporopollenin and the development of an outer, trilaminar wall component. 7. A survey of the literature gives support to this hypothesis and further suggests that the ability to synthesise sporopollenin is related to the ability to produce secondary carotenoids. 8. The significance of the findings is discussed.
