    Notes: Abstract Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) are autoimmune blistering diseases characterized by a loss of cell–cell adhesion and by autoantibodies directed against epidermal cadherins. PF antigen has been established as desmoglein I which is located strictly on the desmosome, whereas the precise ultrastructural localization of PV antigen remains unclear and controversial to date. To further investigate this question, we compared the location of immune deposits in 14 patients with PV and 10 patients with PF by both direct and indirect immunoelectron microscopy (IEM). Inclusion criteria were based upon clinical features, histological level of cleavage and characterization of circulating antibodies by Western blot on epithelial bovine tongue extracts. IEM was performed on unfixed 0.7-mm slices of skin for the direct technique or on normal skin for the indirect technique using peroxidase labelling. In PF, by both direct and indirect IEM, immune deposits were located on the extracellular part of desmosomes (desmoglea) in all the samples studied. In PV, by both direct and indirect IEM, deposits were situated on the desmoglea and along large portions of the keratinocyte membrane without desmosomal structures in 15 of the 18 samples studied and only on the desmoglea in 3 samples. These results suggest that, in contrast to PF, the target antigen in PV is not always restricted to desmosomes. As various types of adherens junctions have been reported to mediate cell adhesion in the epidermis, the PV antigen could be a component of desmosomes and of other focal adhesions.

    Notes: Abstract Linear systems with complex coefficients arise from various physical problems. Examples are the Helmholtz equation and Maxwell equations approximated by finite difference or finite element methods, that lead to large sparse linear systems. When the continuous problem is reduced to integral equations, after discretization, one obtains a dense linear system. The resulting matrices are generally non-Hermitian but, most of the time, symmetric and consequently the classical conjugate gradient method cannot be directly applied. Usually, these linear systems have to be solved with a large number of unknowns because, for instance, in electromagnetic scattering problems the mesh size must be related to the wave length of the incoming wave. The higher the frequency of the incoming wave, the smaller the mesh size must be. When one wants to solve 3D-problems, it is no longer practical to use direct method solvers, because of the huge memory they need. So iterative methods are attractive for this kind of problems, even though their convergence cannot be always guaranteed with theoretical results. In this paper we derive several methods from a unified framework and we numerically compare these algorithms on some test problems.

    Notes: Abstract The diagonal preconditioning in wavelet basis enables one to obtain an optimal preconditioner for Galerkin discretizations of elliptic operators in Sobolev norms of both positive and negative smoothness. We develop these techniques in order to solve efficiently the bi-Laplacian or the bidimensional Stokes problem in ψ–ω formulation using a diagonal preconditioning in wavelet basis for the H−1/2(∂Ω) boundary operator that relates the trace of ∂nψ to the trace of ω.

    Notes: Summary Intestinal involvement in toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) has been identified only rarely. This report describes a case of TEN with ileal manifestations characterized by a profuse diarrhea with malabsorption, protein-losing enteropathy, and radiologically by multiple stenosis. After healing of the cutaneous lesions, total parenteral nutrition was initiated, resulting in a decreased diarrhea. However, after one month of total parenteral nutrition, malabsorption and protein-losing enteropathy continued and the radiological lesions were still present with an aspect consistent with a sclerotic process. A surgical resection of the pathological ileal segment was performed with end-to-end anastomosis. Pathological examination of the resected segment showed a necrosis of the ileal mucosa with a pattern similar to that of the epidermal necrosis. No sclerosis was observed. It seems that a prolonged total parenteral nutrition could have induced a complete healing of intestinal lesions. This case report is the first clinical, radiological, and histological study of an ileal involvement in TEN.
