    Notes: Abstract: The effect of hydrocephalus on cerebral energy metabolites and on intermediates of membrane phospholipid metabolism has been studied in H-Tx rats with inherited infantile hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalic rats and rats with shunts placed at 4–5 days or at 10 days after birth were subjected to magnetic resonance imaging in vivo before 21 days of age to determine the dimensions of the ventricles and cortex. At 21 days, the brains from the three groups of rats, together with age-matched control littermates, were frozen in situ, and chloroform/methanol extracts of cerebral cortex were prepared for high-resolution 31P-NMR spectroscopy. Hydrocephalus resulted in modest decreases in most metabolites quantified. Levels of phosphocreatine, ATP, and diphosphodiesters plus NAD were significantly reduced by 23–32%, and inorganic phosphate content was reduced but not significantly. Levels of the membrane phospholipid intermediates phosphorylethanolamine, glycerophosphorylethanolamine, and glycerophosphorylcholine were also significantly reduced by 30–33%, indicating changes in membrane metabolism. These general decreases are consistent with a loss of cell contents, possibly due to changes in dendrite structure in hydrocephalus. Rats shunt-treated at 4–5 days were similar to control rats for all energy metabolites, but those treated later at 10 days had reduced phosphocreatine and ATP levels. Shunt-treated rats also had reductions in levels of membrane phospholipids, some of which occurred in sham-operated rats. It is concluded that hydrocephalus leads to reductions in levels of energy metabolites and in levels of membrane phospholipids and that the changes in energy metabolites can be reversed by early, but not by later, shunt treatment.

    Notes: The dielectric breakdown of pressurized water and salt solutions subjected to high amplitude electric fields of submicrosecond duration has been investigated. Well-defined pulses (80 kV, 3 ns rise time, 100 ns duration) have been applied to a gap (0.04–0.21 cm), between Rogowski profile electrodes, containing de-ionized, nondistilled water; de-ionized, distilled water; sodium chloride solutions (0.001–1.0 M); or magnesium sulfate solutions (0.01–0.1 M). Breakdown in these liquids has been studied at pressures up to 400 atm. Calibrated voltage dividers situated on the source and load sides of the test gap permitted measurement of the interelectrode potential and the current response. From these measurements, the time lag to breakdown, breakdown voltage, power input to the liquid, and temporal characteristics of the breakdown process have been determined. The breakdown time lag increases with increasing pressure and gap width, and decreases with increasing field. Moreover, it is weakly dependent on the conductivity of the liquid. A dynamical model has been developed to explain these results. In this model, field emission currents heat the liquid and create a region with density below the critical density for the formation of electron avalanches. An ionizing wave front subsequently develops and propagates via a sequence of processes occurring in the region ahead of the front; namely, heating by electron injection, lowering of the liquid density, and avalanche growth and retardation. The time for nucleation of the low density region has been experimentally determined and is in good agreement with theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The current response of water and sodium chloride solutions subjected to high amplitude electric fields of sub-microsecond duration has been investigated. The prebreakdown current-voltage relationship for these liquids is found to be nearly linear for the fields considered and therefore described by a resistance, R. For constant concentration, R does not extrapolate to zero as the gap width, d, goes to zero, suggesting the presence of a high resistivity sheath near the electrodes. Estimates for the sheath parameters (electric field in the sheath, Es, width, dl, formation time, tl, and ion density, ns) are obtained from these measurements. The contribution of electronic and ionic currents to the breakdown probability has been assessed from the power input to the liquid during the pre-breakdown phase. For applied fields with sub-microsecond duration, the input power is primarily due to electron field emission currents whose magnitude is a function of the field in the ionic sheath. For the parameters investigated, ionic currents are found to play a secondary role in these time scales. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Although the morphological approach to the exploration of technological possibilities was first described by Zwicky in 1962 in relation to jet engine systems and used by him as early as 1942, it has received less attention as a tool for creativity than it deserves. Jantsch in his classical review of technological forecasting attempted to establish interest in the methodology, referring to it as ‘a systematic investigation of all the possible solutions to a given problem, without any prejudice, using matrix representations in as many dimensions as there are basic parameters'. Since that time both he and a few others, notably Ayres have continued their interest in its application, dealing with problems in the fields of food production and materials processing.But less recognition has been given to the use of morphology as an everyday tool in the creative approach to simpler and less comprehensive technologies and it is a purpose of this paper to indicate how this can, and indeed should, be effected by those involved in R & D management and planning.

    Notes: Past attempts to rationalize the many methods of technological forecasting have not been sufficiently practical; they have largely been based on an abstract sort of classification while their use has been of an ad hoc nature.This paper reviews the position and puts forward a rationale leading to a more logical classification of methods and a systematic approach to their use in practice.The proposed classification and systematic use of the many methods is based on the concept that a technological forecast has four prime elements or dimensions, qualitative, quantitative, time and probability. Only when all these elements are provided can a technological forecast be responsibly used in decision making in R & D and corporate planning.
