    Notes: Objective A long term review of women after hysterectomy with a history of pre-invasive carcinoma of the cervix.Design 193 women had cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia and two had adenocarcinoma in situ either at hysterectomy or at previous cone biopsy. These were followed up by annual cytology.Setting South Glamorgan Health Authority.Subjects Of 195 women who had a hysterectomy, 143 have been followed up cytologically for more than 10 years and 43 for more than 20 years: a total of 2800 women years of experience.Main outcome measures Timing of abnormal smears.Results A detailed reviw of the five women with abnormal smears. The estimated percentage of women who remain negative is 98% at five years, 98.4%, at 10 years and 96.5 % at 20 years.Conclusion Cytological screening ofall women who had a hysterectomy with a history of CIN is indicated for the first two years after hysterectomy. Thereafter the estimated incidence of 0.7 per 1000 women years is higher than the general population but it is not a sufficient reason to screen more frequently. We recommend screening for the carcinoma of the vagina to be every three years which is the same screening frequency as for cervical carcinoma in the general population.

    Notes: The results of recent studies of the effect of age and sex on the proximate composition of chicken carcass parts, including the edible offals and blood, derived from a commercial broiler strain have been used to calculate the nitrogen content of each part as a percentage of the fat-free meat, The resultant nitrogen factors are discussed in relation to the analytical determination of the meat content of products containing chickcn meat or edible offals.

    Notes: The effects of salt concentration and pH upon protein extractability and water-binding by homogenates of turkey breast, thigh and drumstick meat, and also the effect of salt concentration and centrifugal force upon water-binding of raw meat and water-holding of cooked meat from breast and thigh were studied. Concentrations of sodium chloride above 0.3 M caused swelling of meat homogenates. With the pH value adjusted to 6.0 and with sodium chloride concentrations greater than 0.6 M, breast meat was able to swell more than leg meat. Water-binding increased with increasing pH value. Breast meat homogenates had more extractable protein than leg meat homogenates and protein extraction was increased by increasing both salt concentration and pH. Cooked breast meat retained more water than leg meat with or without salt. At low concentrations of salt, cooked breast meat retained more water than raw meats, but this was reversed at higher salt concentrations.

    Notes: The process of injection of 5% polyphosphate solution into the breast of broiler chickens under commercial conditions had a variable but insignificant effect on the weight of water absorbed during immersion chilling and did not influence the amount of fluid lost on thawing or cooking. However, it produced a net increase in the weight of the carcase at all stages (chilling, freezing, thawing and cooking) subsequent to injection. After thawing and cooking a significant tenderizing effect in treated birds was observed.

    Notes: Perennial rhinitis and asthma are clinical syndromes representing a range of overlapping pathologies; accurate classification should therefore precede any comparison. Although the sinonasal cavities, trachea and bronchi have a common respiratory mucosa, there are also anatomical differences. For example, the nose has a capacitance vessel network and the lower airways possess smooth muscle, both of which are responsive to neurohumoral influences. The prevalence of rhinitis and asthma has increased over the last three decades. Rhinitis occurs in around 75% of allergic asthmatics while 20% of perennial allergic rhinitics develop asthma. Eosinophils, and their associated proteins and cytokines, may play a central role in both perennial rhinitis and asthma with and without atopy. The characteristic pathology of asthma can be summarized as a chronic, desquamating, eosinophilic bronchitis. Non-allergic rhinitis with eosinophilia is recognized, but without consistent evidence of epithelial damage. Eosinophils are also present in rhinosinusitis with polyposis, particularly in patients with aspirin sensitivity, in whom asthma also often occurs. Increased mast cell activation and mediator release is evident in both perennial rhinitis and asthma following allergen challenge. The importance of mast cells in non-atopic asthma and polyposis is also recognized. Adhesion molecules may also be upregulated, with an increased number and activation of Th, lymphocytes. However, allergen-resultant T-cell activation may be less marked in the nose than in the lung. Autonomic imbalance also plays a role in both conditions via changes in neural tone to effector tissues, release of neuropeptides, and interplay with cellular recruitment. Pharmacological manipulation of rhinitis and asthma also illustrates the pathological similarities and differences.

    Notes: A method for rapid detection of the presence of injected polyphosphate or a mixture of polyphosphate and sodium chloride solutions in broiler breast muscle has been developed. Detection is based on the ratio of sodium and phosphorus (as P2O5) concentrations found in a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) extract of the muscle. Comparison of acid digested and undigested TCA extracts showed that the presence of these added salts could be demonstrated equally well without acid digestion. The method has been satisfactorily applied to the analysis of deep-frozen broilers purchased from supermarkets.
