    Notes: High-quality pseudomorphic GaAs/In0.12Ga0.88As single quantum wells (QW's) were prepared by atmospheric-pressure organometallic chemical vapor deposition. Photoluminesence spectra measured at 2.5 and 78 K exhibit intense, sharp peaks [full width at half-maximum (FWHM)=2.6 meV for a 17-A(ring) well at 78 K] from the quantized energy transitions of the QW's. Peak positions agree well with a square well calculation that includes the strain-induced band-gap shift in the In0.12Ga0.88As. Quite unlike previous work with QW's in which the FWHM was found to exponentially increase with decreasing well width, we observed a narrowing of the QW signals as the well width went below ∼30 A(ring). In larger well samples (300 A(ring)), the onset of surface crosshatch patterns was observed, which is expected from critical thickness theory.

    Notes: Dry thermal oxidation of GaAs and AlAs has been carried out in an organometallic chemical vapor deposition system. This in situ process performed either before or after an epitaxial growth serves the purposes of surface cleaning and mask generation for selective area epitaxy of various III-V semiconductors. AlAs oxidized immediately after growth and patterned for the next regrowth provides better oxide-semiconductor interfaces and minimizes wafer handling. Pre-epitaxy oxidation at 435 °C on a patterned wafer with AlAs/GaAs areas resulted in a selective oxide mask. Since thermal oxides of GaAs sublime at temperatures 〉600 °C, a 700 °C pregrowth annealing thus thermally cleans the oxidized GaAs areas while the oxides of AlAs remain as a mask for the following regrowth. Photoluminescence results indicate that high quality regrown interfaces have been obtained.

    Notes: GaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells (MQW) were selectively deposited on GaAs substrates patterned with native oxide, and photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of both the single crystal grown in open windows and the polycrystalline material deposited on the oxide masks were studied. Well-resolved distinct quantum-well (QW) transition peaks indicate no degradation of the epitaxial material quality in the small single-crystal areas. The PL of polycrystalline GaAs is very weak and the peak is centered around the near-band-edge transition energy of GaAs. Polycrystalline MQW structures exhibit much stronger PL signals, and the peak position shifts corresponding to the widths of the QWs grown. These results suggest that the quantum size effect is preserved in the polycrystalline material.

    Notes: The use of thermal oxides of AlxGa1−xAs (0≤x≤1) as masking materials for selective-area epitaxy by organometallic chemical-vapor deposition has been investigated. It was found that the thermal oxide of GaAs is only applicable for low growth temperatures (≤600 °C), and the addition of aluminum significantly improves the thermal stability of the oxide. The oxide of Al0.4Ga0.6As is suitable for high-temperature deposition, but there are criteria for the thickness and oxidation temperature. Thin layers of AlAs oxidized at 475 °C are excellent masks and allow precise thickness control. Promising results of selective-area deposition using these aluminum oxide masks have been obtained. High-quality single crystal grew in mask openings uniformly surrounded by dense and fine-grain polycrystalline deposits, producing a planar duplication of the original pattern.

    Notes: Abstract Vibrio vulnificus, an autochthonous inhabitant of the estuarine environment, was detected in water and oysters from the Great Bay Estuary System of New Hampshire and Maine. Previously, it had not been detected north of Boston Harbor on the east coast of the United States. V. vulnificus was detected in water and shellfish samples at five out of ten sites, and only in areas that were not open to recreational shellfishing. Although samples were collected from May into December, V. sulnificus was only detected in shellfish in July and August. Water sampling began in August, and V. vulnificus persisted at one site into October.

    Notes: Abstract A study was conducted to determine whether the supply of inorganic phosphorus in lake water was sufficient for the mineralization of p-nitrophenol (PNP) by a Flavobacterium sp. The bacterium grew following its inoculation into sterile lake water amended with only 20 or 200 ng PNP per ml, but depending on when the water sample was taken, either PNP was not mineralized or it was mineralized slowly. PNP at both concentrations was rapidly mineralized if 10 mM P was added. The degradation of 200 ng PNP per ml was most rapid if the lake water was amended with 10 mM P, it proceeded more slowly with 1 mM P and the initiation of mineralization was delayed to equal extents if the sterile water received 0.1 mM, 0.01 mM or no P. The possible significance of these findings to biodegradation in natural waters is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The compositional balance of the flora of the Krakatau Islands, Indonesia, is examined in order to identify taxonomic and/or ecological groups which are under-represented in this recovering island ecosystem in relation to regional analogues and potential source areas in the Sunda Strait (Ujung Kulon and Sebesi Island). Interpretations are conditioned by the limited availability of comparative data, the uncertainty surrounding dispersal classifications, the problem of determining habitat suitability for missing elements, and thus the unsuitability of a formal statistical approach. Analysis by dispersal syndrome supports predictions that species with large, winged, wind-scattered propagules, or those with no particular dispersal potential, are under-sampled. However, some species with winged propagules have colonized, in most cases probably by thalassochory (sea-dispersal). Although zoochorous (animal-dispersed) trees and shrubs are well represented on Krakatau, those large-seeded species which are primarily dependent on dispersal by animals other than birds are under-represented. Large-seeded zoochores are probably highly dependent on two species of Ducula (large fruit-pigeons) for transport to Krakatau and their colonization has been relatively slow. Comparison with Christmas and Jarak Islands yields differing degrees of overlap for thalassochorous, zoochorous, and anemochorous (wind-dispersed) spermatophytes and for pteridophytes, interpretable in terms of dispersability and size of the respective species pools. Particular families and genera can be identified which are seemingly under-sampled on Krakatau, as can some which are over-represented in relation to the principal comparative site, the Ujung Kulon peninsular, West Java. The latter are mostly very small-seeded wind-dispersed epiphytic herbs (especially orchids). Ferns are also very well represented in relation to the West Javan source pool. It is concluded that the flora of Krakatau remains disharmonic, in a predictable fashion, although it is certainly becoming less so. The data provide empirical evidence for the abilities of particular functional guilds of rain forest plants to disperse across significant barriers: the implications of these findings are discussed in relation to current concerns with forest fragmentation in the tropics.

    Notes: This study describes experiments on sedimentestuarine water slurries originating from a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh. We investigated the fate of tin(IV) or monomethyltin cation (MeSn3+) chlorides after their additon to slurries under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. We did not observe methylation of tin in anaerobic or aerobic slurries with and without added tin(IV). MeSn3+-amended samples occasionally formed small amounts of Me2Sn2+ or Me3Sn+ after extended periods of time, particularly when MeSn3+ remained in solution. The stability of MeSn3+ in slurries demonstrates that the absence of net methylation of tin(IV) is not due to rapid demethylation of MeSn3+ or its further methylation. Inorganic tin concentrations in the aqueous phase of anaerobic slurries spiked with MeSn3+ and unspiked slurries decreased by about 85% in 21 days and remained relatively constant until the end of the 59-day experiments. In similar anaerobic experiments about 25% of the MeSn3+ spike was adsorbed to sediment within 1 h and about 75% was adsorbed within 10 days. The lack of methylation and demethylation reactions in our aerobic and anaerobic slurries, which contrasts with two previous reports, undoubtedly reflects the absence of added nutrients and low concentrations of added tin(IV) in our experiments. We believe that our model experiments more accurately reflect conditions in salt marshes than do previous studies. We conclude that future model studies on methylation of inorganic tin should include. S. alterniflora because it is so prominent in observations of methyltin compounds in the estuary.
