Notes: Summary Using ethyl α-iodopropionate (I) and diethyl malate (II) or ethyl lactate (III) and diethyl maleate (IV) as starting materials, the furanone derivatives VI and VIIb have been prepared. The latter has been converted into a mixture (XVI) of muscarin and its stereoisomers by various methods summarized in the formulae.

Notes: Summary A recent investigation ofKögl, Salemink, Schouten andJellinek established the constitution of muscarin as the quaternary trimethyl-ammonium salt of 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-5- (amino - methyl) - tetrahydrofuran. Moreover the X-ray analysis elucidated the complete stereochemical configuration of the alkaloid. There are various possibilities for a synthetic approach. The present communication gives a preliminary description of a synthesis which started fromα-acetyl-δ-chloro-γ-valerolactone, leading to a mixture of muscarin and its stereochemical isomers. The synthetic product gives the same R F -value and a very similar infrared spectrum. The pharmacological activity on the frog heart is about one third of that of the natural alkaloid.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Acetabulumfrakturen sind schwerwiegende Gelenkverletzungen.
Notes: Summary Acetabular fractures are severe injuries. Making a diagnosis and deciding on therapy are difficult because of the complexity of the anatomic structure and because of the soft tissues. Choosing the most suitable approach is the most important problem when deciding on the operative treatment. Besides standard approaches (Kocher/Langenbeck, ilioinguinal and extended iliofemoral), the “Maryland approach” has been established in the last few years. Modifying the steps of preparation, it is possible to begin the operation with a Kocher/Langenbeck approach (with variation on where the skin incision is made) and to extend the approach step by step to achieve optimal exposure. Here we describe the results of acetabular fractures treated between 1989 and 1994 (n = 159) in our clinic related to the surgical approach. The “modified Maryland approach” as used in our clinic, starts with exposure of the dorsal column, offering the possibility of a universal exposure.

Notes: [Auszug] THERE has been much controversy about our claim1 that D-glutamic acid is a constituent of tumour proteins. Many authors were unable to confirm our results, and in their opinion the D-form which we isolated from malignant tumours Was formed by partial racemization in vitro during ...

Notes: [Auszug] In analysing tumour proteins, we1have isolated without exception partially racemized glutamic acid. However, Chibnall and co-workers2 recently reported the isolation of optically pure l(+)-glutamic acid in four cases. These authors did not use the same method which ...

Notes: Summary A study was made of the in vitro incorporation of radioactive phosphate into the phosphatides of the benzpyrene sarcoma of the rat, of the Brown-Pearce carcinoma of rabbits, Ehrlich mouse ascites carcinoma and of some normal tissues of tumour-bearing and comparable healthy animals. Whereas the phosphatide content of the studied tumours was relatively low, the incorporation of radioactive phosphate in the tumour phosphatides proved to be high. Paperchromatographic separation of the components, previously purified by column chromatography, and of the products obtained by hydrolysis of the extracted lipids demonstrated that during the in vitro incubation of benzpyrene and Brown-Pearce tumours the isotope was incorporated mainly into the lecithins. In Ehrlichascites cells the isotope was recovered in about equal amounts in the lecithin and phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (cephalin) fractions. At the same time inositol was shown also to be one of the components of the tumour phosphatides. No evidence was obtained of the occurrence of a spermine containing phosphatide (“maligno-lipin”) in the studied tumours. A study of the various cell fractions demonstrated a high percentage of phosphatides to be present in the microsomal fractions of the tumour cells. This is also true for the normal rat liver. A structural function of the phosphatides in tumours is discussed.
