Notes: Abstract Objective: German fire fighters often complain of lumbar back pain after training with a self-contained breathing apparatus while using a device called `Schlag- hammer' (SH). We investigated whether this training produces an excessive load on the lumbar spine. Method: We developed a model to estimate the load on the lumbar spine using a vector model similar to Jäger et al.'s model. The force at the SH's cable was recorded on-line, and the position of each subject was registered with synchronized series of photos. The influence of the different parameters was calculated by varying these data (±10%) and computing the model. Results: There is no dangerous load for healthy persons using a correct technique. Improper technique, however, caused by exhaustion or ignorance, can result in high peaks of lumbar spine load. Conclusions: The lumbar spine loads involved are acceptable if the exercise is performed with a straight back without bending of the lumbar spine and without sudden acceleration. The direction of the pull should be towards the lumbar spine.

Notes: Summary. In this paper, we consider analytic perturbations of an integrable Hamiltonian system in a given resonant surface. It is proved that, for most frequencies on the resonant surface, the resonant torus foliated by nonresonant lower dimensional tori is not destroyed completely and that there are some lower dimensional tori which survive the perturbation if the Hamiltonian satisfies a certain nondegenerate condition. The surviving tori might be elliptic, hyperbolic, or of mixed type. This shows that there are many orbits in the resonant zone which are regular as in the case of integrable systems. This behavior might serve as an obstacle to Arnold diffusion. The persistence of hyperbolic lower dimensional tori has been considered by many authors [5], [6], [15], [16], mainly for multiplicity one resonant case. To deal with the mechanisms of the destruction of the resonant tori of higher multiplicity into nonhyperbolic lower dimensional tori, we have to deal with some small coefficient matrices that are the generalization of small divisors.

Notes: Upper and lower bounds for the minimal critical energy E of the Hartree operator for helium are calculated. We show that a Ritz analogous procedure for the calculation of the upper bounds converges to the exact value. The lower bound to E yields that the ground state EH of the helium atom is strictly lower than 2E.

Notes: Bifurcation from the continuous spectrum of a linearized operator is of interest in many physical problems. For example it occurs in the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and in nonlinear integrodifferential equations as the Choquard problem; it further appears in nonlinear integral equations of the convolution type.A general theory enclosing all these problems is not yet known. To understand the basic phenomena, we therefore consider monotone differential operators whose linearisations have a purely continuous spectrum. It is shown that in fact the lowest point of the continuous spectrum is a bifurcation point, if the nonlinearity grows sufficiently strong.
