Notes: 50 nm period gratings were produced on thick GaAs substrates by using electron beam lithography and two-step wet chemical etching. The size was very close to the theoretical limit of the electron beam lithography. For transferring such a fine grating onto GaAs, a two-step wet chemical etching method was developed, where a H2SO4-H2O2-H2O system is first used to roughly etch the oxygen and carbon-contaminated GaAs surface, followed by surface planarization with a Br-CH3OH system.

Notes: Micromachining Teflon was achieved by direct exposure to synchrotron radiation and the microstructures made had the smallest surface detail down to 20 μm with structural height of more than 200 μm, that is, aspect ratio on the order of 10. The quality of micromachining Teflon by this process was found to be critically dependent on photon flux of the synchrotron radiation. Analysis of the mass distribution of gaseous species formed upon this process suggested that photochemical processes rather than pyrolytic processes may still dominate. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Deposition of crystalline thin films of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was carried out on Si(100) substrates by synchrotron irradiation of a PTFE target in vacuo. In situ mass spectrometric analysis of gaseous species evolved during the irradiation shows that, different from the laser ablation of PTFE for the deposition, the SR-induced reactions should be ablative photochemical decomposition (APD) rather than photothermal unzipping decomposition, yielding saturated fluorocarbons rather than monomers as the main gaseous products. Detection of a trace of CF3 in the deposited films by XPS and FTIR was consistent with our APD mechanism. In our processing, an increase in the target temperature made great improvements including considerable enhancement of the deposition rates, reduction of the CF3 component, and achievement of the crystalline features closer to the PTFE target, whereas an increase in the substrate temperature made the film surface rough. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A direct wide-gap semiconductor LiZnP has been prepared by rapid evaporation onto a quartz substrate. Various characterization techniques such as x-ray analysis, Rutherford backscattering analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the quality of the films. Single-phase films were obtained by annealing during 40 min at substrate temperatures ranging from 400 to 440 °C. The grains in the films were oriented preferentially to the 〈111〉 direction with increasing substrate temperature. The optical transmission of the LiZnP films was observed to the short wavelength beyond an absorption edge (∼600 nm) of bulk materials. This suggests the existence of the imperfection such as accumulated impurities at grain boundaries.

Notes: Background It is interesting from the correct point of preventive health care whether allergy skin tests at entry have the positive relationship with common respiratory symptoms such as persistent cough, persistent phlegm and wheeze with colds at end point in longitudinal studies. Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate this relationship in subjects followed from when they were school-children until they were young adults. Methods Young adults aged 18–31 years who had participated in an allergy skin test and a health survey for common respiratory symptoms during primary and junior high school were asked about their respiratory symptoms at the end-point in the follow-up study. Three cohort groups were employed in the follow-up study. Results According to a multiple logistic analysis with adjustments made for sex. symptoms at entry in childhood, and age and smoking habits at the end-point. young adults with a positive skin test to an extract of house dust as school-children showed a higher prevalence of wheeze with colds compared with those with a negative skin test. However. this relationship was not found for persistent cough or persistent phlegm. indeed. the latter symptom was significantly associated with negative skin tests in one cohort group. Conclusion The respective symptoms at entry in childhood were also predictors of their occurrence in young adults. The results show that the common respiratory symptoms such as persistent phlegm and wheeze with colds in childhood are related to those in young adults rather than is an allergy skin test to an extract of house dust in childhood.

Notes: Following the promotion of anti-air pollution measures in steam power stations using crude oil, atmospheric concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and suspended particulates have declined. These changes in atmospheric concentrations were accompanied by a decline in the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among schoolchildren living near the power stations. In analysing the correlation between air pollutant concentrations and the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, those with positive skin reactions to house dust extract (the positive group) showed a more significant correlation coefficient compared to those who had never had a positive skin reaction (the negative group). In addition, schoolchildren more heavily exposed to air pollutants showed the higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms than the others. With regard to the kind of air pollutants, both sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were more closely associated with the prevalence of respiratory symptoms than suspended particulates. This study has therefore demonstrated that the positive group is a useful population for monitoring the health effects associated with low-degree air pollution of gaseous agents.

Notes: We evaluated the effects of clonidine given orally on sevoflurane requirements for anaesthesia and hypnosis. Patients received either clonidine (5 μg.kg−1) by mouth (n =21) 90 min before surgery or no premedication (n =21) by random allocation. MAC was calculated using repeated tetanic nerve stimulation with end-tidal sevoflurane concentration increased or decreased by 0.3 vol.% depending on the previous response. MAC awake was calculated according to the response to verbal command. The mean (SD) MAC in the clonidine-treated patients was 1.53 (0.20)% compared with 1.83 (0.15)% in the control group (p 〈0.001). Similarly, MAC awake was reduced in the clonidine group (0.50 (0.08)% compared with 0.60 (0.07)% in the control group) (p 〈0.001). We conclude that clonidine 5 μg.kg−1 orally administered pre-operatively reduces sevoflurane requirements for anaesthesia and hypnosis.

Notes: Synchrotron radiation etching of polymers and optical crystals which are transparent throughout the spectral range from visible to ultraviolet has been carried out without using any chemicals, successfully creating high-aspect-ratio microstructures for micromachining. A detailed study of the etching rates by varying the synchrotron beam current, sample temperature, beam size and aspect ratio showed that this synchrotron radiation process is essentially different from laser ablation, while an in situ mass spectrometric analysis of gaseous etching products showed that the dissociation mechanism involved with the synchrotron radiation processing, even with heating, is completely different from the thermal dissociation of the laser ablation.
