Notes: Overhanging margins of proximal restorations are a well-known, iatrogenic cause of periodontal pathology. The high incidence of such findings in Western societies should arouse the concern of the dental community. However, overhanging margins represent only part of the iatrogenic problem created by the misuse of wedges in restorative procedures. Other causes include incorrect proximal contouring, inadequate contact points and under- or overfilling the restorative material. The understanding of the variables associated with wedge selection and positioning has a major role to play in the prevention of iatrogenic periodontal pathology associated with restorative procedures. It is concluded that:(i) the occlusion of the matrix band to the remaining healthy tooth structure of the gingival cavosurface line angle should be achieved solely by the correct application of the wedges;(ii) the effect of the wedges on the proximal contour and contact area should be carefully re-evaluated prior to insertion of the restorative material;(iii) various sizes and shapes of wedges and a sharp knife for carving must be readily available.

Notes: Abstract Oral bacteria colonize the dento-gingival tissues in a selective manner. Hydrophobic reactions have been suggested as one of the major mechanisms of adhesion. Hydrophobicity of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4 (Aa) cells was studied in vitro using adherence to the liquid hydrocarbon, octane. Adherence of Aa cells to octane varied from 60–90%, depending on the medium in which they were grown, age of the culture and the buffer in which the assay was carried out. These data suggest that Aa is a hydrophobic bacterium, the hydrophobicity of which is expressed to a varying degree, and may have a role in its adherence to oral tissues.

Notes: Summary A new culturePenicillium farinosum synthesizing roquefortine and 3, 12-dihydroroquefortine was found. UnlikeP. roqueforti, a known producer of these compounds, the culture under study does not synthesize clavine alkaloids. The maximal roquefortine content was observed in the late logarithmic and early stationary growth phases while the maximal 3, 12-dihydroroquefortine content was obtained in the beginning of the stationary phase.

Notes: Abstract The reduced density matrix method is used to calculate the quantum-statistical properties of the radiation of a quantum-dot laser operating on the whispering gallery mode of a dielectric microsphere. It is shown that under the conditions of strong coupling between the quantum dot and an electromagnetic field the radiation of such a laser can be in a nonclassical (sub-Poissonian) state. The laser scheme considered is characterized by an extremely low lasing threshold and a small number of saturation photons, as result of which lasing is possible with close to zero population inversion of the working levels, if g ≫ P ≫ γ ≫ Γ, where g is the field-matter interaction constant, P is the pumping rate, γ is the loss rate of the resonator, and Γ is the spontaneous emission rate. The largest squeezing inside the resonator-microsphere (the Fano factor F = 0.75) obtains for g ≫ P ≫ γ ≫ Γ, and the greatest squeezing in the fluctuation spectrum outside the resonator [V(ω = 0) ≈ 0.25] occurs for g ∼ P ∼ γ ≫ Γ, and in this case a substantial deviation of the photon number statistics of the radiation leaving the resonator from the Poissonian statistics is observed.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we study an instability of the plasma moving towards the Earth near the inner plasma sheet boundary. We include both the interchange instability of the plasma sheet and the magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction instability caused by an effect of field-aligned currents (connected with electron precipitation) on ionospheric conductivity. The instability leads to the separation of steady-state magnetospheric convection into parallel layers. This instability may be responsible for the appearance of quiet auroral arcs inside region 2 of field-aligned currents flowing out of the ionosphere. This instability allows us to explain also the existence of crossing auroral arcs.

Notes: Abstract A mechanism for the transformation of a magnetoacoustic wave into an Alfvén wave is proposed. During the compression of the magnetosphere by the solar wind the inner edge of the plasma sheet and the contours of B=const move in different ways. In the case of asymmetrical compression, the contours of B=const will cross the inner edge of the plasma sheet. To close the drift currents - that flow in the plasma sheet along the contours of B=const - the appearance of the field-aligned currents is necessary. This appearance corresponds to the generation of the Alfvén wave.

Notes: Abstract The results of coordinated EISCAT and TV-camera observations of a prebreakup event on 15 November 1993 have been considered. The variations of the luminosity of two parallel auroral arcs, plasma depletion on the poleward edge of one of these arcs as well as electron and ion temperatures in front of a westward travelling surge were studied. It was found that a shortlived brightening of a weak zenith arc before an auroral breakup was accompanied by fading of an equatorial arc and, vice versa. A plasma depletion in the E region was detected by the EISCAT radar on the poleward edge of the zenith arc just before the auroral breakup. The plasma depletion was associated with an enhancement of ion (at the altitudes of 150–200 km) and electron (in E region) temperatures. During its occurrence, the electric field in the E-region was extremely large (∼150 mV/m). A significant increase in ion temperature was also observed 1 min before the arrival of a westward travelling surge (WTS) at the radar zenith. This was interpreted as the existence of an extended area of enhanced electric field ahead of the WTS.
