Notes: Ge nanocrystals were produced in 4H–SiC by implantation of 250 keV Ge+ ions with a dose of 1×1016 cm−2 and subsequent rapid thermal annealing at 1400–1600 °C. Radiation damage and Ge distribution after implantation and annealing were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy methods, and x-ray diffraction. After ion implantation a significant amount of Ge is incorporated into the SiC lattice and Ge nanocrystallites were not found. Thermal annealing leads to a local Ge redistribution and both Ge-rich and Ge nanocrystals are detected after annealing. The size of the nanocrystals varies between 2 and 10 nm. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The epitaxial growth of crystalline wurtzite AlN thin films on (001) Si substrates by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy is reported. The nucleation and the growth dynamics have been studied in situ by reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction investigations revealed a two-domain film structure (AlN1 and AlN2) with a 30° rotation between neighboring domain orientations and an epitaxial orientation relationship of [0001]AlN(parallel)[001]Si and 〈011¯0〉AlN1(parallel)〈2¯110〉AlN2(parallel)[110]Si. A model for the nucleation and growth mechanism of 2H–AlN layers on Si(001) is proposed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The contribution of Ca2+-activated K+ channels to hyperpolarizing after-potentials (HAP) of action potentials, to spike-frequency adaptation and thus to the shaping of discharge pattern, was examined in rat supraoptic magnocellular neurosecretory cells. In addition, the expression of BK channels and SK3 subunits of SK channels was studied using double immunofluorescence detection. The presence of BK channels and SK3 subunits was detected in many supraoptic neurones containing either vasopressin or oxytocin. Current-clamp recordings of current-induced spike trains revealed that HAPs comprise a fast and a slow HAP (fHAP and sHAP). Correlation analyses revealed that the increase of the fHAP in amplitude and spike broadening were correlated to a moderate gradual increase of the interspike interval and thus to weak spike-frequency adaptation. By contrast, marked prolongation of the interspike interval and strong spike-frequency adaptation depended on the appearance and on the amplitude of the sHAP. The sHAP and spike-frequency adaptation were blocked by cadmium, as well as by the SK channel antagonist apamin. The fHAP was attenuated by the BK channel antagonist iberiotoxin (IbTX), by the BK/IK channel antagonist charybdotoxin (ChTX) and by apamin. ChTX attenuated fHAPs throughout the entire spike train. By contrast, the IbTX-induced attenuation of the fHAP was restricted to the initial part of the spike train, while the apamin-induced attenuation slowly increased with the progression of the spike train. These results suggest that strong spike-frequency adaptation in supraoptic neurones essentially depends on the generation of the sHAP by activation of SK channels. Comparison of effects of IbTX, ChTX and apamin suggests a complementary contribution of SK-, BK- and IK-channels to fHAPs.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Until today the “Environment and Health” action program (APUG = Aktionsprogramm “Umwelt und Gesundheit”) is not well known, neither by the public nor by the media. At the expert level only complex relationships and general points of view have been discussed. Among other actions an evaluated electronic information tool with the aim to facilitate the tasks to be performed by APUG should promote a broad public participation and initiate concrete actions on the local level. Thus it will provide the essential flow of information between the public and Environmental Health professionals.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The area “Environment and Health” is characterized by interdisciplinary features and, consequently, an intense need for communication. In addition it has to be considered that sometimes there are difficulties in terms of information search. A comparison of national problem solving strategies concerning electronic network activities within this area led to the development project for a European information and communication platform. By this electronic platform the international exchange of experiences, coordination of activities, harmonization efforts and an optimization of qualification possibilities for environmental health professionals will become easier.
