Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht In der 1.
Notes: Summary In the first half of this paper, the variational inequalities of virtual work and its dual, the complementary virtual work are formulated for frictional contact problems with large deformations without restriction on the material properties of the bulk material. Care has been taken to formulate as many as possible terms as variations of a functional. Only the terms involving the frictional traction bound are excepted. Next the significance of the theory for the calculation of frictional contact is discussed.

Notes: Summary It is shown that a possibly redundant robot with rigid links which is driven at the nodes can be stabilized for any feasible, given path of the nodes. This result is generalized to robots with stiff yet flexible links. The Lagrangean equations of motion are used as a description of the robot. The controls are the polygenic generalized forces corresponding to the Lagrangean coordinates. The stabilizing controls are exhibited. Examples precede the general theory.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers the problem of a rectangular flat ended punch acting on an elastic half-space. An approximate solution is generated through application of the elastic line integral equations. The results produced by this method are then compared with another approximate solution already available.

Notes: Summary An attempt is made to locate the non-linear sources inside the cochlea. The possible sources can be divided in several classes: of no significance are the perilymph, the endolymph and the impedances of Reissner's membrane and the basilar membrane; of little significance is the motion of the mentioned membranes in their own plane; of uncertain significance are the oval window impedance and the spiral coiling of the cochlea, while the mechanism of tectorial membrane, haircells and organ of Corti is likely to be an important source of non-linearity. Moreover the widely used membrane equation is improved in the course of the work.

Notes: Summary In the frame of a linear elastic material compression of a cracked plane is considered. Friction during a mutual sliding of the crack surfaces can be responsible for some non-linear effects, in particular, for hysteresis. A rigorous solution to the problem of non-axisymmetric compression of a space weakened by a circular crack with dry friction is given. This solution is obtained in displacements and the field of displacements is represented in elementary functions.

Notes: Summary A variational principle governing the frictionless contact between two elastic bodies is established, which is valid both for linear and for non-linear elasticity. In the case of linear elasticity it appears to lead to an infinite dimensional convex quadratic programming problem. It is applied to the half-space geometry in linear elasticity and it is established that non-Hertzian normal half-space contact problems are physically meaningful. A Hertzian and a non-Hertzian normal contact problem are investigated numerically, to which end the principle is discretised on a triangular network. In the case of the Hertz problem it is found that the exact relationships between penetration, maximum pressure, and total normal force are well satisfied. The form of the contact area is given only crudely, unless the discretisation network is considerably refined. It appeared that such a refinement is only necessary close to the edge, in which case passable results will be obtained.

Notes: Summary Based on a simplified model of the cochlea a one-dimensional approach (the Peterson-Bogert model) is compared with a three-dimensional one. The results appear to be in agreement provided the impedance of the partition is large. This is true for low frequencies except in the region of maximum membrane amplitude. For low frequencies, moreover, the fluid can be considered as incompressible. The influence of the viscosity is investigated by localizing the entire viscous force in a boundary layer. This layer is shown to occur in the fluid. Besides it is concluded that the rotation is approximately largest where the membrane has its maximum amplitude. This can be an explanation for the appearance of eddies at that point.

Notes: Summary A two-dimensional model for the cochlea is developed. An integral equation is derived that describes the pressure difference between the scalae. For the main quantity, the transmembrane pressure, an ordinary differential equation is obtained, which appears to be an improvement of the well-known Peterson-Bogert equation. The results are valid for all frequencies; an assumption of long or short wavelengths is not necessary at all.

Notes: In this paper the computer code Duvorol, dealing with the computation of three-dimensional rolling contact with dry friction, is described. It is based on the variational principle of Duvaut and Lions for dry friction, which leads to an incremental theory. The relevant properties of Duvorol are:1Generality. All half-space steady-state rolling contact problems with Hertzian normal contact can be treated.2Reliability. The total tangential force is always found with reasonable accuracy by a standard discretization.3Speed. On an IBM 370/158 the calculation of a case then takes only several seconds.
