    Notes: Summary Thirty-eight patients with advanced breast cancer were treated with the ‘VEMFAH’ multiple-drug combination chemotherapy, consisting of vincristine (V), cyclophosphamide (Endoxan; E), methotrexate (M), 5-fluorouracil was evaluated by the UICC criteria. Among the 35 evaluable cases, 4 complete responses (CR), 23 partial responses (PR), 2 cases of no change (NC), and 6 of progressive disease (PD) were observed. The response rate (CR+PR) was 77.1%. The median duration of response was 52 weeks (8–192 weeks) or 12 months. In 32 patients who received more than two courses of therapy the 50% survival time of responders was 27.0 months, which was significantly longer than the 10.3 months of nonresponders (P0.05). Except for 2 patients who developed myocardial damage, the therapy was never terminated because of side effects. Cumulative cardiotoxicity was not apparent in this study. This multiple-drug combination chemotherapy with ‘VEMFAH’ is concluded to be an effective treatment for advanced and disseminated breast cancer.

    Notes: The effect of the surface properties on the microtribological characteristics of AlN-based electrostatic chuck (EC) for silicon plasma etching was investigated using automatic microscratch testing technique in combination with SEM examination of the scratch track. The scratch testing was performed by applying a progressive indenter load. The scratch failure model varied systematically with the surface properties of AlN. The data of the onset of brittle fracture were used as characteristic features of the AlN failure. It was found that the critical load, Lc, the smallest applied normal load leading to unacceptable damage such as chipping and cracking, increases with decreasing the average grain size, density and fracture toughness of AlN and decreases with increasing the surface roughness and area density of pre-existing polishing damages. The resistance to cohesion and adhesion failure of AlN with 0.1 µm Al2O3 oxide layer on top was stronger than that of the AlN bulk material. The fracture initiation and ductile to brittle transition in AlNAl2O3( 0.1µm) was in form of discontinuous chipping. The results infer the potential of the combination of the scratch data with the material properties for the understanding of the effect of the surface topography on the mechanical properties and chucking performance of AlN-based EC

    Notes: A microtibological study of the effect of the CMP machining surface damages (SD) on the micromechanical properties of AlN electro-static chuck (ESC) for silicon plasma etching is presented. AFM and SEM examinations of the AlN ESC, which were CMP finished to a surface roughness, Ra = 20 nm, have revealed machining geometry errors and chemical mechanical SD caused by the CMP slurry. The elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H) of AlN and those of yttrium (Y) particles were discretely clarified using localized nanoindentation technique. The results showed that the CMP machining SD fatally affected the AlN/Y boundary strength and resulted to errors in the first contact points between the indenter and the sample. In addition to SD, the micro scale viscoelasticity phenomena of AlN in indentation caused peculiarities at peak loads in the load vs. depth plots. Under these circumstances, the values of E and H measured using Oliver and Pharr's method are in fact underestimated; E = 400 GPa and H = 20 GPa for AlN particles, 300 GPa and 17 GPa for Y particles and 500 GPa and 16 GPa for AlN/Y interface, respectively

    Notes: The low-cycle fatigue behavior and the relationship between the surface features in thelow-cycle fatigue testing and the fatigue life of Sn-3.5Ag and Sn-0.7Cu lead-free solders wereinvestigated at strain rate of 0.1%/s at room temperature, 80 and 120oC. In addition, the fatigue lifewas estimated by using the surface deformation of the solders, and image processing. And also, itwas compared with Coffin-Manson type of fatigue behavior. The fatigue life of Sn-3.5Ag solderwas superior to that of Sn-0.7Cu solder at temperatures, 80 and 120oC. The fatigue life determinedby surface deformation indicated a close behavior to Coffin-Manson type fatigue behavior in thosesolders. Therefore the low-cycle fatigue life of solders could be estimated by the surfacedeformation

    Notes: The low-cycle fatigue behavior on Sn-0.7Cu lead-free solder as-cast and Sn-Pb eutectic solder as-cast were investigated at a strain rate 0.1%/s under various temperatures of 25, 80 and 120oC. In addition, the relationships between the surface feature in the low-cycle fatigue test and low-cycle fatigue life of those solders at 25oC were investigated by image processing. The low-cycle fatigue life of Sn-0.7Cu decreased when the temperature increased. And the fatigue life of Sn-0.7Cu was better than that of the Sn-Pb eutectic solder at the temperatures of 25 and 80oC. The low-cycle fatigue behavior on the solders investigated followed Coffin-Manson equation. The fatigue ductility coefficient of Sn-0.7Cu was found to be affected by the temperature. The surface deformation as fine meshes in the low-cycle fatigue test of Sn-0.7Cu did not appear until 10% of the fatigue life. Althoughit was over 10% of the fatigue life, the surface deformation that was caused by micro cracks and coalesces occurred with the increasing number of cycles. The relationships between the surface feature in the low-cycle fatigue test and the low-cycle fatigue life on Sn-0.7Cu and Sn-37Pb solders were discussed

    Notes: Abstract  Purpose: To compare VMCP, a multidrug combination chemotherapy comprising vincristine (VCR), melphalan (MPH), cyclophosphamide (CPM) and prednisolone (PSL), with MMPP comprising MPH, ranimustine (MCNU), procarbazine, and PSL as induction, to elucidate the value of alternating combination chemotherapy, and to search for an appropriate maintenance therapy in multiple myeloma. Methods: At 16 institutions in the Nagoya City area, we carried out a randomized trial of VMCP versus MMPP as the initial treatment. Patients who were refractory or resistant to the initial therapy were crossed over into the other arm (crossover trial). For patients who achieved a partial response (PR) or a minor response (MR) and in whom the paraprotein level ceased to decrease, the maintenance therapy was randomized either to an MPH/PSL combination (MP) or to alternating combination therapy (AT) with VMCP and MMPP. Results: In the 94 evaluable patients of the 111 enrolled, the response rate (PR rate) was 27.7% (13/47) in the VMCP arm and 44.7% (21/47) in the MMPP arm (P=0.0859). The crossover trial resulted in a PR rate of 15.8% (3/19) for the VMCP→MMPP crossover and 14.3% (2/14) for the MMPP→VMCP crossover. The median survival time was 23.4 months for those initially begun in the VMCP arm and 24.9 months for those in the MMPP arm, showing a tendency for better survival during a follow-up of 2–6 years with MMPP treatment, but without statistical significance. The survival time of patients with progressive disease was significantly shorter than that of patients with PR, MR or no change (NC). However, there was no significant difference in the survival rate among those who achieved PR, MR, or NC. As to the maintenance therapy, there was no significant difference in survival between MP therapy and AT. Patients who reached a plateau phase survived significantly longer than those who did not. Except for six cases of grade 3 or 4 neurotoxicity in the VMCP arm, there was no significant difference in the hematologic or gastrointestinal toxicity between the two arms. Conclusions: We conclude that VMCP is less effective for myeloma than MMPP as the induction treatment, that alternating noncrossresistant chemotherapeutic combinations do not offer an advantage in multiple myeloma, and that patients who reach a plateau phase have a significantly longer survival time.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, a three-point bendJ lc fracture-toughness test was carried out using four types of structural steels at room temperature. The values of (γ p)V, which represent the width of the region where the voids are located just ahead of the crack tip, were measured by Beacham's method [9] with the help of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The experimental (γ p) values and the theoretical values obtained using the finite element method (FEM) or calculated fromK at initiation are in good agreement. It was found that there is a certain linear relationship between (γ p)Vand the stretched zone width (SZW), and an experimental relationship betweenJ lc andσ flow·(γ p)V which may be expressed by the following equation: $$J_{lc} = 44.1 + 0.35\sigma _{{\text{flow}}} \cdot (\gamma _{\text{p}} )V_c KJ$$ whereσ flow is the average value of the yield stress and the ultimate tensile strength. (γ p)V c represents the critical value of (γ p)V. The numerical constant 44.1 kJ m−2 is considered to be aJ lc value for brittle fracture of the material tested, according to the authors' previous results. It is possible to calculateJ lc if (γ p)V c can be measured.
