    Notes: For a period of 1 year, some blood parameters were evaluated on a monthly basis in a population of adult European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) intensively reared in floating marine cages (Ionian Sea, Mediterranean). From April (13 months old) to July (16 months old) males (35–50%) and sexually indeterminate individuals were collected. From August to March (24 months old) only males were sampled. During this period the percentage of spermiated males was highest (100%) from November (20 months old) to January (22 months old). Plasma testosterone in males was inversely related to sunlight (h month−1) and was elevated between October and January, when males first achieved sexual maturity. Testosterone showed the highest value (0.49 ± 0.02 ng ml−1) in January and the lowest (0.09 ± 0.02 ng ml−1) in March. Haematocrit, red blood cell counts and haemoglobin concentration were elevated from November to March, being inversely related to sunlight. The two latter parameters were also inversely related to daily food intake. Haematocrit, red blood cell counts and haemoglobin concentration were highest in December [53 ± 1%, (5.36  ± 0.06) × 106 mm−3, 10.08 ± 0.14 g 100 ml−1, respectively] and lowest in June [35 ± 1%, (3.33 ± 0.05) × 106 mm−3, 6.47  ± 0.13 g 100 ml−1, respectively]. White blood cell counts were not correlated with sea water temperature, sunlight or daily food intake. They were highest in February [(8.45 ± 0.20) × 104 mm−3] and lowest in April [(6.07 ± 0.14) × 104 mm−3]. Total plasma protein concentration (4.88 ± 0.11–5.93 ± 0.10 g 100 ml−1) and mean cell volume (93.3 ± 0.9–105.5 ± 1.8 μm3) showed small fluctuations throughout the year. Sexual maturity appears to be a major factor that significantly affects haemopoiesis of D. labrax. This study contributes to the evaluation of normal levels of some blood parameters in European sea bass, which are helpful for the assessment of physiological status and health of this species.

    Notes: Specific growth rate, average daily food intake, gross conversion efficiency, plasma total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and glucose were evaluated annually in a population of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) intensively reared in floating marine cages. These data are aimed at improving productivity and allows more precise limits to be placed on the hematological parameters which are a necessary precondition for the assessment of fish condition and health.Specific growth rate (%), average daily food intake (%) and gross conversion efficiency showed relatively higher values in the warm spring and summer months. The specific growth rate correlated better with the seawater temperature and the average daily food intake than with the photoperiod. The concentrations of plasma total lipids, triglycerides and glucose were higher in summer. Plasma total cholesterol concentrations were higher during the pregametogenesis and gametogenesis periods. Plasma triglycerides correlated better with photoperiod and plasma glucose than with the seawater temperature.

    Notes: Abstract Background: To assess the value of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of perforation of the alimentary tract (AT). Methods: During a 4-year period 76 patients with proven AT perforation underwent CT within 1 week before surgery or endoscopy. We retrospectively reviewed these CT scans to determine the signs of AT perforation. There were 41 men and 35 women (28–90 years old). Our goal was to establish the diagnosis of AT perforation and, if this was possible, to identify the site and cause of the AT wall rupture. The CT diagnosis of perforation was based on (a) direct findings of extraluminar air or gastrografin and (b) indirect findings of an abscess or an inflammatory mass surrounding an enterolith in the region of appendix or a bowel wall–related phlegmon or abscess with fluid in the mesentery or surrounding radiopaque foreign body. Results: There were 65 true-positive and 11 false-negative cases. Levels of perforation were the esophagus (two), stomach (five), duodenum (12), small bowel (15), appendix (six), and colon (36). Causes were peptic ulcer (11), foreign body (five), trauma (seven), iatrogenic (nine), appendicitis (six), diverticulitis (21), Crohn disease (five), AT carcinoma (eight), and ischemia (four). Level and cause were correctly predicted in 55 and 51 instances, respectively. The sensitivity was estimated to 85.5%. Conclusion: CT is a valuable method in the diagnosis of AT perforation. The diagnosis can be established rapidly, without patient preparation and with a high sensitivity.
