Notizen: The local two-dimensional stability characteristics of a confined compressible mixing layer with a hyperbolic tangent velocity profile are studied on an inviscid basis. By examining the temporal growth rate at the saddle point in the wave number space, the flow is characterized as being either absolutely unstable or convectively unstable. Results are presented, showing the amount of backflow necessary to have this type of transition for a range of primary flow Mach number, M1, up to 3.0. The transition curve for M1 between zero and 1.0 and between 1.35 and 3.0 is defined by a single curve. However, for M1 between 1.0 and 1.35, multiple transition curves exist, due to the fact that multiple modes exist when M1 is greater than unity. In this region the mode that becomes absolutely unstable depends on the magnitude of the back flow.

Notizen: The effects of variable viscosity on the surface wave mode of instability of a liquid film flowing down heated or cooled inclined surfaces are examined. Stability boundaries are presented using two models of viscosity variation with temperature. Both models yield qualitatively similar results. It is shown that heating destabilizes the flow, while cooling stabilizes it. For the case of heating the critical wavenumber αc is always zero, while for the case of cooling αc can be nonzero. By variation of the governing nondimensional parameters, a reasonably complete picture is given when instability occurs first at finite wavelengths.

Notizen: Longitudinal vortices with axes in the direction of a mean shear flow can arise due to body force instabilities associated with heating or centrifugal effects. In this paper we are concerned with possible stabilization or destabilization of such instabilities by means of a controlled flow oscillation in the spanwise direction. For the heated case, stabilization occurs up to the values of Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers at which streamwise two-dimensional disturbances become critical. For the centrifugal case, stabilization occurs only for sufficiently large values of the Reynolds number associated with the spanwise oscillation; for smaller values, destabilization occurs. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The equation governing the average rate of change of disturbance kinetic energy is evaluated for various wavenumbers at fixed values of Reynolds number, Weber number, and angle of inclination. The dominant energy production term is associated with the work done by the perturbation shear stress at the free surface. The mechanism of instability, however, is associated with a shift of perturbation vorticity relative to the surface displacement resulting from advection.

Notizen: Falling films on inclined planes display surface and shear instability modes, the latter being important at small angles β of inclination of the plane. These modes are analyzed with particular attention paid to the effects of surface tension. The results show that the critical Reynolds number of the shear mode is nonmonotonic in either the angle β or the surface-tension parameter ζ but displays a local minimum at nonzero values of β and ζ. For large Reynolds number, an analysis shows that the shear mode is inviscidly stable, but that the surface mode is unstable.

Notizen: A new technique is proposed for delaying the onset of thermal convection in a horizontal layer of fluid. The method consists of causing the fluid in the layer to oscillate slowly about a zero mean with two horizontal velocity components that are neither in phase nor 180° out of phase. Convection rolls then experience the stabilizing effects of shear regardless of their orientation. The amount of stabilization seems likely to be substantial, especially at large values of the Prandtl number.

Notizen: The instability of a liquid jet immersed in a coflowing compressible airstream has been investigated on the basis of a linear, inviscid stability analysis, assuming uniform velocity profiles within the liquid and gas. Both two-dimensional and circular jets are investigated. Pronounced peaks in the temporal and spatial growth rates occur for values of the free-stream Mach number close to unity. A change from convective to absolute instability also occurs in this transonic flow regime of the gas.

Notizen: The effect of density gradients on two-dimensional (2-D) supersonic wall modes (acoustic modes) of a 2-D confined compressible shear layer are investigated using linear analysis. Due to the inadequacies of the hyperbolic tangent velocity profile, the boundary layer basic flow profiles are used. First, a test case is taken with the same parameters as in a previous analysis by Tam and Hu [J. Fluid Mech. 203, 51 (1989)], who used a hyperbolic tangent profile. For the boundary layer profiles, three generalized inflection points are found giving rise to three modes. The first two show similar properties to those found by Tam and Hu, whereas the third is a new mode that can have a higher growth rate than the others. As the density ratio is increased above that of the test case, the smallest of the three neutral phase speeds tends toward the speed of the lower-velocity stream, and the other two eventually coalesce and then disappear. These two effects lead to a linear resonance between some of the modes that increases the cutoff frequency and growth rate of the lowest mode. In fact, growth rates of two to four times the test case were found as the density ratio was increased to 7. A similar trend (linear resonance) is observed as the density ratio is decreased from the test case, but the growth rate is only slightly changed from the test case. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
