    Notes: Abstract A novel method for evaluating nondestructively the quality of bonded assemblies is presented. It is shown that a combination of HOC (higher order crossing) analysis and another frequency domain parameter can distinguish between different surface treatments, as well as predicting cohesive or adhesive failure of bonds. It is believed that this method will open the way to predict the durability of bonded structures at the manufacturing or inservice stages.

    Notes: The dielectric and magnetic properties of polystyrene composites containing barium or nickel-zinc ferrites were studied as function of the ferrite concentration and field frequency. The composites were prepared by methods yielding a random distribution of the ferrite particles or segregated structures. Barium ferrite-poly-styrene composites exhibited a typical insulator behavior, and only above 60% ferrite were high values of the dielectric properties noted at the lower frequencies, decreasing gradually with frequency to the low values typical of the higher frequencies. The mode of barium ferrite particle distribution did not affect the dielectric properties. The nickel-zinc ferrite systems demonstrated a conductor type behavior. An apparent insulator-conductor transition was observed, having lower values for segregated than for random distributions. The magnetic permability of barium ferrite-polystyrene composites above 10% ferrite increases with the ferrite concentration, whereas the magnetic dissipation factor steeply increases with concentration above 40% ferrite.

    Notes: The shear and elongational viscosities of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), polycarbonate (PC), and their 20%LCP/80%PC blend, were studied using a capillary rheometer. The investigation focused on experimental studies using two sets of capillaries. The first set comprised capillaries having a converging entrance followed by a cylindrical section. The second set, “zero length” set, included capillaries having only the converging section. In the two sets various entrance angles were used. Experimental results have shown that shear viscosities and entrance pressures are practically independent of the entrance angles. The entrance pressure drop was small in the case of PC and reached 50% of the total pressure drop for LCP. The elongational viscosities of the LCP were found to be higher than those of the PC in the elongational-rate range studies, while shear viscosities of the LCP were higher in the lower shear rate region and lower in the higher shear rate region compared to those of PC. This was attributed to the orientability of LCP in elongational and shear flows.

    Notes: The mechanism of skin/core morphology development and LCP (liquid crystalline polymer) fibril formation in polycarbonate/LCP blends was studied. A certain minimum concentration of the LCP phase must be present for the formation of continuous LCP fibrils in the extrudates. A skin-core morphology characterizes the PC/LCP extrudates. Short LCP fibrils are formed in the capillary converging entrance section, through the elongation of LCP domains and their coalescence. Continuous fibrils were formed in the skin of extrudates emerging from cylindrical capillaries, through the coalescence of the short fibrils, provided the shear stresses are high enough and the LCP viscosity is equal or lower than that of PC. Increasing capillary length enhances the LCP lateral migration and fibrils formation. The high interfacial tension stabilizes the LCP fibrils. In the core region the short fibrils recoil or breakup, resulting in spherical or elongated droplets. Long and continuous fibrils cannot be formed in a zero length capillary, even at high flow rates.

    Notes: The orientation development characteristics in shear flow of wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers were studied. Based on the analysis of shear flow in a capillary followed by elongational flow, an experimental setup has been proposed to determine the shear-induced orientation. Experimental results have indicated that shear-induced orientation depends on total shear strain. However, orientation enhancement due to shear flow is much less effective compared with orientation buildup in the case of elongational flow. Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers that exhibited higher orientability in elongational flow exhibited also higher orientability in shear flow. Finally, to obtain high, shear orientation in processing of thermotropics, special care should be exercised in the design of dies and molds and in optimizing processing conditions, so that high shear rates and/or long shearing times should prevail.

    Notes: The distribution of residual stresses in quenched modified poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) specimens was investigated. Quenching was carried out from temperature level above Tg to various temperatures below Tg. As expected, compressive stresses were measured at the surface layers while tensile stresses were in the inner layers. The ratio between the tensile and compressive stresses varied, depending on the thermal history. The level of residual surface stresses was found to depend on both the total temperature difference during cooling and the initial specimen temperature. At constant initial temperature the surface stresses are proportional to the total temperature difference, whereas, at constant final temperature the surface stresses are inversely proportional to the total temperature difference. An empirical correlation describing the surface stresses as a function of thermal history has been suggested. The differences between present theories and experimental data are discussed. emphasizing the apparent discrepancy regarding the influence of initial temperature above Tg on the level of residual stresses.
