    Notes: The bonding and surface diffusion of 4-trans-2-(pyrid-4-yl-vinyl) benzoic acid (PVBA) on Pd(110) was investigated by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at sample temperatures between 300 and 450 K. PVBA is a large organic molecule designed for nonlinear optics applications. At low coverages single PVBA molecules are randomly distributed at the surface where they bind diagonally to three neighboring Pd-rows, leading to four equivalent adsorption configurations. The "dog-bone" molecular structure could be resolved. The molecules' surface diffusion is strictly one-dimensional along the close-packed [11¯0]-direction of the surface Pd atomic rows and obeys an Arrhenius law with an activation barrier of 0.83±0.03 eV and an attempt frequency of 1010.3±0.4 s−1. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Commercially available angular resolvers, which are routinely used in machine tools and robotics, are modified and adapted to be used under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions. They provide straightforward and reliable measurements of angular positions for any kind of UHV sample manipulators. The corresponding absolute reproducibility is on the order of 0.005°, whereas the relative resolution is better than 0.001°, as demonstrated by high-resolution helium-reflectivity measurements. The mechanical setup and possible applications are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate the detection of a molecular beam by means of a micromechanical momentum transfer detector operated in vibrational resonance. With a sensitive surface area of 0.5×0.3 mm2 the small paddle allows us to detect a beam with 6.5×107 He atoms hitting the surface per second. The detector response time equals the damping time of the paddle oscillation of about 1 s. The detector is sensitive enough to measure intensities in molecular beam scattering experiments. The novel detection scheme has the potential to allow the development of a position sensitive molecular beam detector. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The rotational relaxation of molecular deuterium in a free jet expansion has been studied between 78 and 473 K by pseudorandom time-of-flight technique. In the temperature range 78–308 K a decrease of the rotational collision number Zrot with increasing temperature is observed as predicted theoretically by Raff and by Rabitz and Lam. Also reported are room temperature data of Zrot for H2 and HD expansions. The number of collisions required to relax H2, D2, and HD at room temperature is in the ratio 10:5:1.

    Notes: A high-resolution apparatus designed for the study of elastic and inelastic scattering of thermal helium atoms from crystal surfaces is presented. The highly expanded He nozzle beam has an energy spread ΔE/E of about 1.4% and is collimated to 0.2°. The angle subtended by the detector opening as seen from the sample is also 0.2°. Beam intensities as low as 10−6 of the specular beam intensity from a low-temperature clean Pt(111) surface are detectable. Pseudorandom chopping with a resolution of 2.5 μs (flight path 790 mm) is used for time-of-flight (TOF) analysis of the scattered helium. The base pressure in the sample chamber is in the low 10−11 mbar. The capabilities of the apparatus are demonstrated for physisorbed Xe adlayers on Pt(111). The results presented are obtained by using He scattering in various modes: coherent inelastic, coherent elastic, and incoherent (diffuse) elastic. This technique allows for a nondestructive nearly exhaustive characterization of the thermodynamics, structure, and dynamics of physisorbed adlayers on arbitrary substrates.

    Notes: A high-intensity supersonic nozzle beam source is described, whose beam energy can be varied between 2 and 170 meV (helium). Experimental performance and time-of-flight measurements on cold helium beams are reported. Condensation in the free jet expansions of helium has been studied by mass spectrometric detection of He+2. A correlation between the maximum speed ratio and the onset of clustering is observed.

    Notes: A new type of detector for the determination of absolute molecular-beam intensities is described. The intensity is obtained from the work done on a cylindrical rotating body by the torque exerted by the impinging beam particles. The detector takes advantage of the very low and constant bearing friction of magnetically suspended rotors and of the complete particle momentum accommodation on uncleaned surfaces. The detection limit of the present design is Imin0 =1.2×1015/Mv˜, where M is the atom mass and v˜ the average velocity of the beam particles in ms−1. The molecular-beam detector turns out to be an absolute instrument. Principle, experimental performance, and measurements with helium nozzle beams are reported.

    Notes: Experimental investigations on the red photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si) embedded in a SiO2 matrix, fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and a subsequent post-treatment, reveal under certain conditions the occurrence of kinetic oscillations. For the red PL between 1.5 and 1.75 eV, the spectral shift and the peak intensity versus annealing times show temporal oscillations. The spectral variations are explained by the growth and decay kinetics of two oxygen thermal donors (TDs) upon annealing. The oscillatory behavior is a pure kinetic one. It reflects the regrowth of oxygen TDs by an autocatalytic process during their decay. Although the source for the autocatalysis is not clear, this PL oscillation adds more evidence that the red PL observed in our system originates from oxygen TDs-related defect states. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
