    Notes: Sieving efficiency, defined as the percent increase in yield of numbers or biomass of organisms, obtained by use of a sieve with 0-25-mm mesh openings instead of a 0-50-mm meshed sieve, was investigated in a lotic habitat over a 12-month period. Greatest elficiencies obtained were 300 to 600% for mayflies, chironomids, simuliids, ‘other dipterans,’ water mites and plecopterans and 90 and 190% for trichopterans and coleopterans, respectively. For the fauna as a whole, efficiency varied from 95 to 325% over the study period.Efficiency in estimating biomass was not as great as that with numbers and generally was below 10% for trichopterans. mayflies, ‘other dipterans’, coleopterans and the fauna taken as a whole. For chironomids, simuliids and water mites efficiencies generally were higher than 10% and reached as high as 174%, 60% and 80%, respectively. In all groups efficiency varies throughout the year with lowest occurring during winter months.The findings are compared with data found in the literature and discussed in relation to structural, behavioural, and life history characters.

    Notes: Abstract. Concentrations of PCBs, DDTs, toxaphene, chlordanes, dieldrin, and mercury were determined in smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) collected from Fumee Lake, a remote lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. An ecological hazard assessment was conducted to determine potential impacts of contaminants on bald eagles and mink eating fish from this lake. Concentrations of organochlorines, except toxaphene, and mercury in smallmouth bass were similar to those found in fish from Lake Superior, where atmospheric inputs are the primary sources. Bioaccumulation was indicated by a positive correlation between fish weight and contaminant concentrations for organochlorines, while mercury concentrations did not appear to correspond predictably to body weight. Concentrations of mercury and PCBs in smallmouth bass were sufficiently great to be of concern regarding their consumption by eagles or mink.

    Notes: Abstract Five species of fishes, two species of aquatic macrophytes, zooplankton, migratory goose feces, water and sediments from a eutrophic lake were analyzed for mercury, cadmium, lead and thallium. Mercury was detected in fishes and sediments only while cadmium and lead were detected in all components. Thallium was detected only in sediments. Sediments in the lake act as a ‘sink’ for the four metals. Mercury in axial musculature of largemouth bass was highly correlated with length and weight. A high degree of correlation between other metals and weight and length of other species was not evident. The feces of migratory waterfowl had high concentrations of both cadmium and lead. In view of the large quantity of waterfowl feces deposited within the drainage basin, it is suggested that this avenue is one of the major sources of contamination for the two metals and that fallout from airborne particulate matter is secondary. Fallout of airborne particulate matter may be the primary method by which mercury and thallium enter the lake although residual concentrations of the four metals in soil of the drainage basin were not determined.
