Notes: ONGC's Hazira Gas-Processing Complex (HGPC) consists of facilities for receiving natural gas along with associated condensate from an off-shore field at a rate of 20 MMN M3 per day. After separating the condensate, which is processed in condensate fractionation units, the gas is processed through various steps to recover LPG and to reduce its dew point to less than 5°C in order to make it suitable for transportation over long distances. The acid gas recovered during the gas-sweetening step is processed to obtain sulphur. The major products manufactured at HGPC therefore are lean sweet gas, LPG, NGL, and sulphur. The Oil and Natural Gas Commission awarded the assignment on Hazard Study and Risk Analysis of their Hazira Gas-Processing Complex (HGPC) to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in association with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The scope of this assignment covered a number of closely related and fully defined activities normally encountered in this type of work. Identification of hazards through the most appropriate methods, assigning frequency of occurrence of major unwanted incidents, quantification and assessment of probable damage to plant equipment, environment, human and animal life due to an unexpected event, and evaluation of various methods for reducing risk, together constituted the methodology for this assignment. Detailed recommendations aimed at reducing risk and enhancing reliability of plant and machinery were made. This article gives an overview of the assignment.

Notes: Cockayne syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive condition producing a dwarfed, mentally retarded infant or child. Problems with airway management and an increased risk of gastric aspiration are the main anaesthetic concerns. Anaesthetics given to three patients with Cockayne syndrome are described. In two of these, tracheal intubation was difficult and the use of a laryngeal mask airway proved invaluable.

Notes: The retinal photoreceptors of Channa punctatus include rods, single cones and the double cones. The double cones have the outer segments having lamellae which are distorted into tubules and vesicles, and the inner segments with hypertrophied mitochondria.

Notes: The eye of Rhinomugil corsula has a duplex retina differentiated into dorsal and ventral halves, with the ventral retina 116·4 μm thicker than the dorsal retina. The rods of the ventral retina are relatively longer, with longer outer segments. The nuclei of the outer nuclear layer of the dorsal and ventral halves are in four and six to seven rows respectively. The rod outer segment bears a single incision. The mitochondria of cone and rod inner segments has a vitreal-scleral gradient. Single and double cones are present in both halves, with triple cones in the dorsal half only. The outer segments of double cones are equal and united. The single cones have two connecting cilia. The cone cells are arranged in a square mosaic with four double cones and five single cones to each unit in the dorsal half, and in a rhombic pattern in the ventral half.

Notes: Wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Yorkstar and Sirius) were cut transversely into embryoless and embryo-containing (embryonated) halves and the content of endogenous cytokinins and gibberellins in both halves determined before and after the seeds imbibed water for 12–15 h at 22°C in the light. Dry seeds contained little ethyl acetate-extractable gibberellin activity as measured by bioassay but n-butanol-soluble cytokinins were detected mainly in the embryoless halves. Dry, embryonated half-seeds contained water-soluble gibberellins which could be extracted into acidic ethyl acetate after treatment of the aqueous extract with either alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase or a crude pectolytic enzyme preparation. When half-seeds were allowed to imbibe water for 12 h and then extracted, cytokinin activity was largely lost from the embryoless halves and completely from the embryonated halves and water-soluble gibberellins were also lost from the embryonated halves. However, ethyl acetate-soluble gibberellins were present in the latter suggesting that “bound’ gibberellins were released during imbibition. The hormones present in normal and naturally embryoless dry grains of cv. Yorkstar were also determined. Both gibberellin and cytokinin activity was higher in normal grains suggesting that the presence of an embryo is essential for synthesis or accumulation of these hormones in the grain during development.

Notes: The induction of α-amylase synthesis in barley aleurone by cyclic 3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate or GA3 was inhibited by abscisic acid. The concentration of ABA required to inhibit α-amylase induction by the cyclic nucleotide in the extract was one-fiftieth to one hundredth of that required for GA3-induced α-amylase. It is concluded that the effects of ABA on GA3 and cyclic nucleotide induced α-amylase synthesis in the aleurone are independent and indirect.
