    Notes: Thin films of LixVO2(0≤x(approximately-less-than)0.43) were made by reactive sputtering and annealing post-treatment, followed by electrochemical cycling in an electrolyte containing LiClO4. The films showed electrochromism, and bleached under Li insertion. Weak thermochromism was observed with a drop of the transmittance, accompanied by a conductivity increase, at ∼60 °C.

    Notes: We present a comparative study of two isostructural platinum and palladium poly-ynes, poly[trans(bis(tributylphosphine))M(1,4) phenylenediethynylene], where M represents either platinum or palladium. Optical excitations are associated with the π-molecular orbitals, and with strong spin–orbit coupling provided by the transition metal, both singlet and triplet excitations can be measured. The platinum and palladium polymers show similar low-temperature photoluminescence and photoinduced absorption spectra, with a blue-shift for the palladium polymer of around 5% for electronic transitions with respect to the platinum polymer. For Pt (Pd) we see strong singlet absorption peaks at 3.26 eV (3.49 eV), and weaker triplet absorption peaks at 2.43 eV (≈2.5 eV) at room temperature. Strong photoluminescence from triplet to ground state peaks at 2.38 eV (2.5 eV), and weak photoluminescence from the excited singlet peaks at 3.06 eV (3.2 eV) at low temperatures. Photoinduced absorption that peaks at 1.49 eV (1.72 eV) is due to transitions within the triplet manifold. Triplet lifetimes at low temperatures of 30 and 200–600 μs are found for the platinum and palladium polymers, respectively.

    Notes: We present a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the electronic excitations in transition metal-containing phenylene ethynylenes. The influence of the metal on the nature of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states is characterized. We find that π conjugation occurs through the metal sites, which deeply modifies the optical properties of the conjugated chains. We also analyze the chain-length dependence of the singlet–singlet, S0→S1, singlet–triplet, S0→T1, and triplet–triplet, T1→Tn, transition energies; both experimental data and theoretical results indicate that the lowest triplet exciton, T1, is strongly localized on a single phenylene ring while the S1 and Tn states extend over a few repeating units. Finally, we estimate the geometric relaxation phenomena occurring in the lowest excited states and perform a Huang–Rhys analysis of the triplet emission spectrum in model systems. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Hatching responses of the Japanese whiting, Sillago japonica Temminck et Schlegel, to a series of temperature changes were measured by exposing the fertilized eggs to eight constant incubation temperatures which ranged from 20·0 to 34·0°C. For a control, hatching temperature was kept the same as temperature of the ambient environment. Hatching responses were expressed as hatching percentages. Altogether 18 experimental trials were conducted during the natural spawning season of the species which extended over a period of 2 months from late July to mid-September 1988, when seawater temperature varied between 24·0 and 30·0°C. Optimum and limiting temperatures were recorded and the data were optimally fit to the quadratic model. Results indicated that viable hatch occurred at almost all ranges of hatching temperature from 22·0 to 32·0°C. However, no hatching was recorded at either 20·0 or 32·0°C. The experiment showed that the optimum hatching temperature varied with the ambient temperature changes during the spawning season, indicating the latter to be a dependent factor for any hatching success.

    Notes: Abstract Apparent digestibility coefficients were determined for six feedstuffs, subsequent to their processing into pelleted feed for tropical freshwater catfish, Mystus nemurus (Cuvier & Valenciennes), using a reference diet and test diets composed of 70% reference diet and 30% test ingredient. It was found that most ingredients were fairly well digested except maize and chicken viscera. Digestibility coefficient for protein (P), dry matter (DM) and energy (E) were: (1) fish meal: 97·8% P,97% DM. 77·88% E: (2) soybean meal: 86% P,95·55% DM, 67·89% E: (3) rice bran: 81% P,85·81% DM, 67·93% E: (4) copra meal: 79·90% P, 86% DM, 71·89% E: (5) maize: 51·93% P, 49·0% DM, 63·40% E and (6) chicken viscera: 37% P,29% DM, 52% E.Digestibility coefficients for feedstuffs indicated that animal protein product, such as fish meal and grain by-product, such as rice bran were more digestible than starchy and fibrous feed, e.g. maize. Chicken viscera was poorly digested largely due to inefficient processing. As most feedstuffs were well digested, ingredient selection should, therefore, be based primarily on their protein content, amino acid composition and palatability.

    Notes: Abstract. The reproductive biology of a popular and abundant freshwater catfish, Mystus nemurus Cuvier & Valenciennes, was examined, including sex ratio, gonadosomatic index, ova diameter and fecundity. The numerical ratio of male to female was 1:1.06 and was not significantly different (P 〉 0.05). Mean female gonadosomatic indices (GSI) in April and September corresponding to north-east and south-west monsoons were significantly different (P 〈 0.05) from the dry season (May, June, July and August). Thus the apparent GSI maxima in April and September were indicative of peak spawning period. However, there were no significant differences (P 〉 0.05) in the fluctuation of the measure of GSI except for those in the dry months, which probably suggested the existence of a protracted breeding season. Mean male GSI in February and November were similarly significant (P 〈 0.05) to the dry season, although not statistically different (P 〉 0.05) from those of January, March, April, July, August, October and November. This was probably attributable to an extended breeding period with spawning peaks in February and November corresponding to early and late monsoons. The aseasonal reproduction is common in tropical fishes. GSI were positively correlated with rainfall and water level fluctuations. Fecundity varied from a minimum 6900 to a maximum 93510 in specimens with total lengths of 34.8cm and 45.0cm respectively. Fecundity was found to increase linearly with length and weight and was significantly different (P 〈 0.05) from them.
