Notes: Summary 1. Some properties of p-(trimethylsilyl)benzaldehyde were studied. It gives characteristic qualitative reactions of carbonyl compounds (silver mirror and reaction with Schiff's reagent) and freely gives addition and condensation reactions with sodium bisulfite, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, semicarbazide, hydroxylamine, ammonia, and aromatic amines. 2. The bisulfite compound, carbazone, and oxime of p-(trimethyisilyl)benzaldehyde were prepared for the first time, as also were 4,4%4′'-tristrimethylsilylhydroberizamide and N-p-(trimethylsilyl)benzylideneaniline. 3. It was shown that it is possible to prepare silicon-containing dyes of the triphenylmethane series.

Notes: Summary 1. A general catalytic method was developed for the preparation of trialkyl- and triaryl-silyl derivatives of organic hydroxy, oxo, and polyhydroxy compounds. 2. It was found that the best catalysts for the reaction are halides of Ni, Co, Cr, Ge, Zn, and Sn. Eighteen trialkylsilyl derivatives of hydroxy, oxo, and polyhydroxy compounds were synthesized in yields of up to 95 % and their physicochemical properties were determined. 3. It was shown that some trialkyl- and triaryl-silyl derivatives of organic hydroxy and polyhydroxy compounds freeze below −50° and boil without decomposition above 500° (760 mm). These compounds can be used as heat carriers.

Notes: Summary We studied the reaction of phenol with trialkylsilanes of various structures, catalyzed by metal halides. The most suitable halides for this reaction are those of Cr, Co, Ni, Ge, Zn, Sn, and Hg. The reaction rate depends on the structure of the trialkylsilane and the amount and nature of the metal halides. The reaction of trialkylsilanes with phenol, catalyzed by metal halides, is a simple and convenient method of synthesizing trialkylphenoxysilanes, which are formed in yields of up to 98% of theoretical. We synthesized 16 trialkylphenoxysilanes (13 of which were prepared for the first time) and determined their properties. 16 trialkylsilanes were prepared as starting materials and 8 of these were described for the first time.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of the catalytic reaction between trialkyl(aryl)silanes and allyl alcohol in the presence of small additions of alkali metals or of zinc and tin halides. 2. A convenient method has been developed for preparing 3-trialkyl(aryl)siloxypropenes-1 through trialkyl(aryl)silanes, with a yield up to 80% of the theoretical. 3. Confirmation has been obtained for the regularities found earlier in the effect of trialkyl (aryl)silane radicals and the nature of the catalyst on the reaction rate. 4. Eleven trialkyl(aryl)allyloxysilanes have been synthesized for the first time.

Notes: Summary 1. The condensation of p-trimethylsilylbenzaldehyde with aldehydes and ketones has been studied. 2. A number of tetra-substituted silanes have been prepared, the organic radicals of which contain different functional groups (carbonyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl) and their physicochemical constants have been determined. Seven of the compounds prepared were synthesized for the first time. 3. The Si-Car bond in these compounds is stable to the action of 10–20% solutions of alkalies and acids.

Notes: Summary 1. A study was made of the reaction of trialkylsilanes with pentaerythritol in presence of certain metal halides. The reaction rate depends on the structure of the trialkylsilane and the amount of catalyst. 2. The infrared absorption spectra of the silyl derivatives of pentaerythritol obtained in the region 3600-3100 cm−1 indicate the presence of both inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds, which explains the low reactivities of the unsubstituted hydroxy groups.

Notes: Summary 1. Some silicon-containing aromatic acids were prepared from p-(trimethylsilyl)benzaldehyde; these included an alcohol containing two silicon atoms. 2. In these alcohols the Si-Car bond is stable to the action of 20–50% solutions of acids. 3. It was shown that it is possible to bring about the dehydrocondensation of silicon-containing aromatic secondary alcohols with triethylsilane in presence of zinc chloride.

Notes: Summary 1. A study was made of the reactivity of talc, serpentine asbestos, montmorillonite and muscovite by comparing the amount of surface hydroxyl groups and carbon in the starting samples and the same samples after they had been refluxed with methyl alcohol. 2. The investigated silicates differ in the character of their reaction with methyl alcohol at the boiling point of the latter (64.7°): talc and serpentine asbestos exhibit irreversible adsorption, which takes place without a transformation of the hydroxyl groups; the montmorillonite and muscovite are apparently esterified. 3. In the case of muscovite, together with the postulated esterification, there also takes place another process, leading to a high carbon content in the samples that had been treated with the alcohol.
