    Notes: The discharge characteristics of a prototype ion source for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research neutral beam system, which has been developed to meet the specification of 120 keV and 65 A beam during 300 s, were investigated. The relationships between the operation conditions, such as the filament current, the arc current (up to 1200 A), the pressure of the ion source, and the measured plasma parameters were studied, and the possibility of steady-state operation was checked. Langmuir probes were used in measuring the plasma parameters and the density distributions. The hydrogen ion density was 2.0×1011 cm−3, the electron temperature was lower than 5 eV, and the plasma uniformity around the bucket was within 30% in the optimum operation conditions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In laser materials processing, localized evaporation caused by focused laser radiation forms a plume of mixed vapor and ambient gas above the material surface. The beam is refracted and absorbed as it traverses the plume, thus modifying its power density on the surface. In this work, plume–beam interaction is studied using an axisymmetric, high-temperature gas-dynamic model of a plume formed by vapor from an iron surface. The beam propagation in the plume is calculated from the paraxial wave equation including absorption and refraction. The simulation results quantify the effects of plasma plume properties on the beam radius and laser power density variations at the material surface. It is shown that absorption and refraction in the plume have significant impacts on the laser–material interaction. Absorption of the beam in the plume has much less direct effect on the power density at the material surface than refraction does. However, absorption is essential for the formation of the plume, without which there is no refraction. Helium gas is more efficient than argon for reducing the beam refraction and absorption effects. Laser energy reflected from the material surface has significant effects on the plume properties. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The goal of this work is the formulation of an analytical model of optical and acoustic emission generation by laser welds. A simplified model of the visible portion of the laser weld plume is used as a basis for the prediction of optical and acoustic signals. The optical emission is calculated from the strongest helium and iron lines in the visible spectrum. The sound pressure is calculated as a function of vapor flow rate by considering the displacement of ambient air by vapor emanating from the keyhole. The model reveals that generation of visible light increases roughly in proportion to the flow rate of vapor from the plume. However, the acoustic signal is predicted to vary as the time derivative of the flow rate. Experimental measurements of visible light are found to be of the same magnitude as predicted by the model and the fluctuation of the optical and acoustic signals are found to be consistent with the hypothesis that they are both fundamentally due to vapor flow rate variations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We propose and implement a promising fabrication technology for geometrically well-defined single-electron transistors based on a silicon-on-insulator quantum wire and side-wall depletion gates. The 30-nm-wide silicon quantum wire is defined by a combination of conventional photolithography and process technology, called a side-wall patterning method, and depletion gates for two tunnel junctions are formed by the doped polycrystalline silicon sidewall. The good uniformity of the wire suppresses unexpected potential barriers. The fabricated device shows clear single-electron tunneling phenomena by an electrostatically defined single island at liquid nitrogen temperature and insensitivity of the Coulomb oscillation period to gate bias conditions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cutaneous manifestations of Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia (WM) include purpura, ulcers, urticaria, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, and immunobullous dermatoses. No association has been reported previously of WM and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A 40-year-old female HBV carrier was admitted to hospital because of generalized oedema, oliguria, haematuria, hypertension, fever and blood-tinged sputum. Cutaneous manifestations included generalized petechiae, palpable purpura mainly on the legs, multiple necrotic ulcerations and gangrenous changes on the toes, and necrotic, giant confluent reticulate purpura on the trunk surmounted by several tense bullae. Laboratory investigations revealed monoclonal gammopathy of IgM kappa type (6.7 g/L), membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis associated with HBV infection, Bence Jones proteinuria, and an increased number of abnormal plasmacytoid cells in the bone marrow. Pathologic examination demonstrated immune complex-mediated vasculitis with deposits of IgM in the walls of dermal vessels and secondary subepidermal bulla formation. HBV infection may have caused WM or modified the clinical course in this fatal case.

    Notes: Aims:  To determine the utility of p57kip2 in the diagnosis of hydatidiform mole. p57kip2 protein is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKI) and is strongly paternally imprinted, being expressed from the maternal allele. It has been hypothesized that complete mole (CHM) with only the paternal genome would display reduced or nearly absent expression of p57kip2 compared to partial mole (PHM) having both paternal and maternal genomes.Methods and results:  The immunohistochemical expression of p57kip2 protein was investigated using paraffin-embedded tissue sections in histologically unequivocal cases of CHM (n = 51), PHM (n = 7), invasive mole (n = 1), and hydropic miscarriage (n = 2), as well as in histologically undetermined cases (n = 9). In the histologically unequivocal complete and invasive moles, expression of p57kip2 was absent except for one case in which villous cytotrophoblast covering the villous stroma was positive (51/52) as well as villous stromal cells (51/52). In contrast, it was strongly and continuously expressed in both villous cytotrophoblast and stromal cells in all cases of PHM and hydropic miscarriage. Among the nine histologically undetermined cases, five cases showing p57kip2 immunopositivity and hyperploid DNA were classified as PHMs, two cases showing p57kip2 immunonegativity and hyperploidy as CHMs, and two cases with p57kip2 immunopositivity and diploid DNA as hydropic miscarriage and diploid PHM, respectively, upon review of the histopathological findings. Intermediate trophoblast forming trophoblastic columns or anchoring villi and extravillous trophoblast at the implantation site showed variable expression of p57kip2 in all gestational conditions. Maternal decidua showed diffuse and strong p57kip2 expression, whereas syncytiotrophoblast was completely negative in all cases regardless of the diagnosis.Conclusions:  In summary, p57kip2 immunostaining results correlated well with morphological features of molar pregnancies and were helpful in determining histologically equivocal cases.
