Notes: Use of a rapid thermal annealing technique is shown to improve the electrical properties of metal-ferroelectric BaMgF4-silicon capacitors. The fluoride film was deposited in an ultrahigh vacuum system at a substrate temperature of 300 °C. A postdeposition annealing was conducted for 10 s at 600 °C followed by subsequent annealing for 5 s at 750 °C. The results were found out to increase the resistivity of the ferroelectric BaMgF4 film from a typical value of 1–2×1011 Ω cm before the annealing to about 5×1013 Ω cm at 1 MV/cm and reduce the interface state density of the BaMgF4/Si interface to about 8×1010/cm2 eV. Ferroelectric hysteresis measurements using a Sawyer–Tower circuit yielded remanent polarization and coercive field values of about 0.26 μC/cm2 and 315 kV/cm, respectively. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background:  p63 is a p53 homolog and a marker expressed in replicating keratinocytes. Survivin is a recently characterized inhibitor of apoptosis protein that is abundantly expressed in most solid and hematologic malignancies. Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the major determinant of human telomerase activity, and its expression is indicative of unlimited replication. We herein evaluated the expression profiles of p63, p53, survivin, and hTERT in usual skin cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and putative preneoplastic epidermal lesions, including actinic keratosis (AK), Bowen's diasease, and porokeratosis. Methods:  Immunohistochemistry using antibodies against p63, p53, survivin, and hTERT was performed. Semi-quantitative evaluation (–, +, 2+, 3+) was carried out. Results:  BCCs showed diffuse p63 expression and SCCs heterogeneous p63 expression with negativity in terminally differentiated squamous cells. All preneoplastic epidermal lesions showed p63 expression in all cell layers. p53 was found in seven of 10 cases of BCCs, all 10 cases of SCCs, and nine of 10 cases of Bowen's disease. AK and porokeratosis revealed focal to moderate p53 expression. Survivin was found in eight of 10 cases of SCCs and eight of 10 cases of Bowen's disease. Six of 10 cases of BCCs revealed weak survivin positivity. AK and porokeratosis showed survivin expression confined to the basal layer. hTERT expression was found in most cases of skin cancers and preneoplastic lesions. Conclusions:  p63 expression may be a marker of basal/progenitor cells and a diagnostic marker in skin tumors. p63 expression is not related to p53 expression in these tumors. This study points to a putative role of survivin and hTERT in the development of certain skin cancers. In addition, our data support the concept of porokeratosis being a premalignant condition.

Notes: This study focused on the determination of fracture toughness by instrumentedindentation technique. A theoretical model to estimate the fracture toughness of ductile materials isproposed and used to verify those results. Modeling of IIT to evaluate fracture toughness is based ontwo main ideas; the energy input up to characteristic fracture initiation point during indentation wascorrelated with material’s resistance to crack initiation and growth, and this characteristic fractureinitiation point was determined by concepts of continuum damage mechanics. The estimated fracturetoughness values obtained from the indentation technique showed good agreement with those fromconventional fracture toughness tests based on CTOD. In addition, we confirmed that the proposedmodel can be also applied in the brittle material through modification of void volume fraction

Notes: The instrumented indentation technique (IIT) is a powerful method for evaluatingmechanical properties of materials such as elastic modulus, tensile strength, fracture toughness andresidual stress. Especially, IIT is a promising alternative to conventional methods of residual stressmeasurement such as hole drilling, saw cutting, X-ray/neutron diffraction, and ultrasonic methodsbecause of its various advantages of nondestructive specimen preparation, easy process, characterization of material properties on local scales and measurement of in-service structures.Evaluation of residual stress using IIT is based on the key concepts that the deviatoric-stress part ofthe residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve and that the quantitative residual stress in atarget region can be evaluated by analyzing the difference between the residual stress-inducedindentation curve and residual stress-free curve. To verify the applicability of the suggestedtechnique, indentation tests were performed on the welded zone

Notes: The development of the instrumented indentation test (IIT), which gives accuratemeasurements of the continuous variation in indentation load as a function of depth, has paved theway to assessing tensile properties and residual stress in addition to hardness by analyzing theindentation load-depth curve. In this study, analytic models and procedures are presented forevaluating tensile flow properties and residual stress states using IIT. Tensile properties wereobtained by defining representative stress and strain beneath the spherical indenter. The evaluationof residual stress is based on the concepts that the deviatoric stress part of the residual stress affectsthe indentation load-depth curve, and that analyzing the difference between the residual stressinducedindentation curve and the residual stress-free curve permits evaluation of the quantitativeresidual stress in a target region

Notes: The instrumented indentation technique (IIT) has recently attracted significant researchinterest because it is nondestructive and easy to perform, and can characterize materials on localscales. Residual stress can be determined by analyzing the indentation load-depth curve from IIT.However, this technique using a symmetric indenter is limited to an equibiaxial residual stress state. In this study, we determine the directionality of the non-equibiaxial residual stress by using theKnoop indentation technique. Different indentation load-depth curves are obtained at nonequibiaxialresidual stresses depending on the Knoop indentation direction. A model for Knoopindentation was developed through experiments and theoretical analysis

Notes: The Platinum catalysts on the carbon nanotubes(CNTs) supports of various diameterswere prepared by wet impregnation method using H2PtCl6 precursor. The samples using 100nm,15~20nm, 10~15nm and 5~10nm diameters of CNTs and carbon nanofibers(CNFs) are named Pt/t-CNFs, Pt/MWNTs20, Pt/MWNTs10 and Pt/MWNTs5, respectively. The effects of CNTs diameteron the Pt particle size and distribution were investigated by the means of powder XRD and TEMobservation. In addition, the electro-catalytic characteristics for methanol electro-oxidation wereestimated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)techniques. The average size of Pt particles increases as follows; Pt/MWNTs10 〈 Pt/MWNTs5 〈Pt/MWNTs20 〈 Pt/t-CNFs. The electro-catalytic characteristics of Pt/MWNTs10 and Pt/MWNTs20are found to be superior in comparison with the others. For preparation of the most effectivesupported Pt catalyst, the optimum diameter of CNTs support in the range of 10-20nm, is needed

Notes: Anodic oxide films were formed on titanium using an electrolyte solution containingphosphoric acid for dental implants by an electrochemical method. The parameters of the oxidationprocess were current density and electrolyte concentration. The micro structural morphology, surface roughness, thickness of the oxide layer and the behavior of voltage-time curves wereexamined. The results show that the surface roughness, porosity size and the thickness of the oxidelayer showed similar trends as the process parameters were changed. The surface morphology of thesamples was observed for different current densities at a constant electrolyte concentration. Thepore size, thickness and roughness of the anodic oxide films are directly proportional to themaximum voltage and the slope of the voltage to time transient (dV/dt) curves during the growth ofthe galvanostatic anode oxide film on plate type Ti

Notes: High-temperature oxidation behaviors of Ti-Al-Si-N and Ti-Al-N films werecomparatively investigated in this work. Two kinds of Ti0.75Al0.25N and Ti0.69Al0.23Si0.08N films weredeposited on WC-Co substrates by a DC magnetron sputtering method using separate Ti3Al(99.9%)and Si(99.99%) targets in a gaseous mixture of Ar and N2. Si addition of 8 at.% into Ti-Al-N filmmodified its microstructure to a fine composite comprising, Ti-Al-N crystallites and amorphousSi3N4, and to a smoother surface morphology. While the solid solution Ti0.75Al0.25N film hadsuperior oxidation resistance up to around 700[removed info], the composite Ti-Al-Si-N film showed furtherenhanced oxidation resistance. Both Al2O3 and SiO2 layers played roles as a barrier against oxygendiffusion for the quaternary Ti-Al-Si-N film, whereas only the Al2O3 oxide layer formed at surfacedid a role for the Ti-Al-N film. Oxidation behavior and mechanical stability of the films afteroxidation were compared between two films using instrumental analyses such as XRD, GDOES,XPS, and scratch test
